The Ocean Would Fix Me

I had a great-uncle,

or something like that;

a carpenter. He smelled like

Sawdust; his smile crinkled

up his face to the eyebrows;

he didn't talk much.

When he knelt down and

hugged you goodbye,

he left little lines

of dust, that clung to your shirt.

He built chairs and

tables and shelves and boxes

and more chairs, and dressers

and cabinets and

One time, when his wife

was still alive, a beehive.

He had part of a rowboat

in his shop every time I went,

and he'd say, when asked,

"Oh, I'll finish that someday."

One day, apparently, he did.

They found his car down

at the river one morning,

with a note saying

who he'd borrowed the trailer from,

and the river flowed from there

Into the sea, and

we never saw him again.

But I have dreams about him:

the crunch of gravel at the shore,

the splash and lap of the waves,

the hollow thunk of the oar,

all quiet sounds, like him;

and the current, flowing steady

to the wide ocean.

Wispy sky and gentle water,

and that old man

in his little boat,

Floating between them

in the cool of the night,

Above and below the great expanses,

smelling like Sawdust.

I got a 4 min long video of Kimchi dreaming today, so here's a clip

You get the whole walk cycle and the little sprint at the end.

Sometimes her sprints last for like 4 or 5 seconds and she can shoot herself off the couch or into a wall if she gets a grip with her back claws. If she does it next to a wall, her head smacking into it sounds like someone is trying to break into the house. She doesn't wake up.

Later in the dream she injured her paw and was limping, and earlier she caught something and ate it.

1990 house in Waitsfield, VT was designed and built by Yestermorrow founder John Connell. It's supposed to be "creative, whimsical, but also highly efficient and exciting." 2bds, 2ba, 1,594sqft, $495k.

The first thing you encounter is the very different front door. There's a little mud area in the corner.

The living room is straight ahead, or you can take the stairs.

The stairs lead up to the kitchen and a sitting area.

The kitchen is up a few stairs and there's another staircase to the bedrooms.

This kitchen is exactly like another home I posted in Vermont. It has to be by the same architect. Same striped wood counter with the same "V" shape jutting out.

In fact, the whole layout of this floor is the same.

I guess you'd call this a family room.

The other house didn't have this counter, it was much a smaller home. The 3 stairs on the side are for Bd. #1.

Fancy. Inlaid on the stairs.

The half bath must be tucked in by the stairs somewhere.

And, then you go back down to the bedroom. Those stairs are terrible.

Why is there a slanted floor and an open clothes rack?

The room has sliders to the terrace that we saw outside.

This is unique.

The other stairs come up to the 2nd bedroom. What is that hump in the floor? They aren't using the 2nd bd., but they have an office area set up in the corner.

The bedroom is basically empty. On the left, does that just drop down to the floor below?

This bar is weird.

There're little sculptural features on the cement columns.

Believe it or not, that's the Mad River running alongside the 1.77 acre property.
