I'm in a romantic mood today so
There were two engagement scenes in s5 – jancy un-proposal and jopper proposal
And like, two is a good number, but three is even better!
So I think we're missing a third one 👀

One more question: as far as I know, in the s5 script, Vecna’s lair is described as the Pain Tree. But how does El know that Vecna’s lair looks like a tree?
It makes sense why she thinks crawling through the rift above the lab would be a shortcut: Holly fell from the sky here around the same time Max woke up, so she couldn’t have gone far from the lair.
Fun fact: the journey from the “entry point” into the Abyss to Vecna’s lair should take about as long as it would take to walk from Squawk to HNL, adjusting for the difference in terrain. Anyone who collects ST maps can try doing the math 😁
But why “tree”? The characters never used that term in their discussions.
In his visions, Will saw the lair from the inside and simply called it “this place“ with “some spires”. The interior resembles a cave with stalactites and stalagmites more than anything tree-like.
Holly saw the lair from the outside when she was trying to escape. Theoretically, she could have told El off-screen about the details of her misadventures… if only everyone hadn’t been too busy running away at that moment 👀
So yeah, why "at the tree"?
Bonus: Operation Beanstalk
I wasn’t entirely honest with you in my previous post. Actually, I have no reason to envy Dr. Kay, cause I found the plan that the soldiers discovered in the projector on Reddit.
Wow, the letters are so clear, and the bottom of the sheet isn’t cut off – it’s just a godsend! And I even strayed from my own rule –“if the viewer can’t easily read the text while watching then it’s not that important” – and found myself squinting at the pixels in 5x08, trying to figure out what was written there 🤪 As it turned out, I could’ve spared my eyesight 😅
Let’s go through it step by step to see what ultimately went according to plan and what didn’t.
• Mission Prep
Everything lines up here.
Fun fact: the party members involved here (Erika, Mr. Clark, and Hop) weren’t present at Will’s coming out – they were busy! I’m mentioning this only cause it was incredibly hard for me to keep track of who was there and who wasn’t 🫠
• Infiltrate MAC-Z
Speaking of Will: he’s not on the truck’s passenger list, but Joyce is! That’s a surprise to me... I was sure that since he planned to stay, she would too, but no – she and her axe were planning to head into the Abyss 🤔
It’s hard for me to say just how much Will’s presence in the Abyss influenced the outcome of the final battle. He peeked through the hive mind to see what Henry was up to, distracted him with a conversation in the mine – which may have bought Holly and the others a little time before El arrived – and later helped El by slowing down Henry’s attacks and tearing off his arm. Will undoubtedly made a contribution, but I don’t get the feeling that “without his powers, nothing would have worked out.”
How would things have turned out if Will had stayed in Squawk when the military raid happened? There’s only one thing I’m certain of here: Vickie would have felt much more at ease with a full-fledged partner in crime 😃 As for the rest, we can only speculate endlessly.
Maybe the two of them could've carried Max down to the basement, and then the soldiers wouldn't have found party's operations headquarters (or would have found it much later). Maybe Will would have slipped away from the radio station, climbed up the tower, and kept repeating into the walkie, “Code Red! We’re being searched! Do you copy?” until he made contact with the party. Maybe Joyce, being a worried mom, would have tried to contact Will as soon as she left the Abyss, and would have panicked when she didn’t get a response. (So many ideas for fix-it fics – too bad I’m not a writer 😅)
El didn’t have to fight at MAC-Z or block followers – that didn’t happen. Hop and Nancy did all the work, so El just showed up in front of Dr. Kay to ramp up the drama.
• Lab Rats
Everything here generally checks out.
• Beanstalk Brigade
This is interesting because it reaffirmed my assumptions: the truck was supposed to pick up the lab rats for evacuation. Instead, the rats rode in a Humvee – I’ve already said enough about that situation, so there’s no need to repeat myself 🫠
• Escape
Through MAC-Z (bolded). No comments.
Let’s summarize!
There’s nothing about the need to maintain communication with the team in Hawkins during the final part of the plan.
Not a word about whether Erica and Mr. Clark are needed for the escape through MAC-Z.
Vickie isn’t mentioned at all. Can I assume, then, that staying in touch via walkie-talkie was entirely her initiative? Isn’t that why Robin called her overbearing in the epilogue? How rude!
How exactly they planned to sneak El into Hawkins through the MAC-Z without being captured? Still unclear.
You know, if I were to believe Mike’s story about El’s escape for just a sec… If I were in her shoes, I’d think that my so-called found family didn’t really appreciate me; I’d be upset and wouldn’t send any postcards.
They brought my girl straight into Dr. Kay’s arms as soon as her superhero work was done. The only thing missing was a gift bow.
Ugh!
Drunk of victory
5x08 gave us a whole lot of infuriating moments. But there’s one in particular that makes me grind my teeth. Whole writers' room should chip in to pay for my dentist and I’m not kidding.
Ah, home sweet home. It’s so nice to be back in Hawkins from that hellhole! The MAC-Z gate is already visible in the distance, and nothing can stop the heroes’ triumphant entry into town…
Oops!..
Who would have thought there would be soldiers at the military access control zone? 😱 They’ve been there for the entire 18 months; they were there just a couple of hours ago, and they haven’t gone ANYWHERE 😱
Who could have expected that Dr. Kay – who shared dramatic look with El near the gate and sent soldiers after her – would be waiting for the girl right here? 😱
No one could have imagined, as they drove into the UD under cover of gunfire, that an ambush would be waiting for them on the way back 😱
Spike strip – what a treacherous trick! A good old classic tool in the army/police arsenal 😱 If only there had been an incredibly motivated cop/veteran among the characters to predict this outcome 😱
The most unexpected plot twist ever 🤌
Seriously, was I supposed to gasp or what?

The final step in the plan to defeat the big, bad villain was “We rescue the kiddos, come home heroes”. Viewers aren’t given any further explanation… but let’s think this through logically.
• Fact 1. The military and their desire to capture El have been a hindrance to the fight against Henry all season. It’s no secret; everyone is well aware of this threat.
• Fact 2. No one wants the military to take El away. Her family and friends love her and would much rather know she’s free and happy, thank you very much.
• Fact 3. Also, no one wants El to be blowed up with the UD. No one knows she’s planning to do that (with Kali), but if anyone did, everyone would be categorically against it.
I’m willing to admit that amid the chaos of the last few days – when no one got a wink of sleep while carrying out one crazy plan after another – the characters might have been a bit careless about El’s safety. This season, she’s been relied on far too often as a magical savior, a superhero for whom nothing is impossible. Lines like “only El can do this” are repeated from one dialogue to the next. Meanwhile, she herself is the one who really needs help.
But luckily, we have Hopper! I’d even go so far as to say that he’s the only one for whom the military is the main concern, and Henry is a sub-concern. I wrote a whole separate post about this.
Conclusion: the last crazy plan should have included “Do it in a way that El doesn't get caught” note. Hopper would've written it down himself if the rest of the party had suddenly forgotten.

So did the characters have a plan for how to get El back to Hawkins past the military? I thought long and hard about this question, and while my initial answer was “No, they didn’t have one – how stupid!”, I later began to see the vague outlines of a possible plan... which, for some reason, they don’t follow once they return from the Abyss.
Here, we’ll have to go back to Hop’s 37 successful crawls and talk about the importance of radio communication.
Note: I'm not very smart, and I don't really understand how radio communication works in general, let alone radio communication with another dimension in a fictional universe.
For now, I'll focus on this fact: a character in the Rightside Up can talk via walkie-talkie with a character in the Upside Down if they're both in roughly the same location.
In 5x07, Mike contacts Dustin (even though Dustin’s walkie is broken and the connection isn’t very good). They’re in different dimensions, but both are near the lab.
And in 5x08, Vickie talks to Robin. One is in the WSQK in Hawkins, and the other is near the WSQK in the UD, and they can hear each other perfectly.
It was vital for Hopper to stay in touch with his support team. During their missions, the party kept Hopper informed of the surrounding situation so he could sneak into a truck in the supply convoy unnoticed, jump off at the right intersection, and catch a ride back to Hawkins in time. He, in turn, also reported back to them on how he was doing and whether everything was okay. Everyone was working according to plan like a well-oiled machine.

With the crawl to the Abyss, everything immediately goes wrong.
• Stealth and caution went out the window. Now, to infiltrate the MAC-Z, they’re getting into a firefight with the military.
I get that driving a huge truck unnoticed through the gate is a real challenge. But, damn it, they’ve got an illusionist on their team??? An illusionist with extensive criminal experience, mind you – one who successfully fooled the Chicago police in the past. Cops would storm in guns blazing, and the entire queer commune would vanish into thin air. How about a little trick to distract soldiers?
No? Okay, cool, whatever.
• Technically, there’s a four-person support group left in Hawkins. One of them is a middle schooler (no offense, Erica), the second one slept through all the last 38 crawls and is scheduled to be in a trance, and the other two were today years old when they first learned about the UD. It’s hardly surprising that they were caught like blind kittens. My opinion: they should have left someone else behind in Hawkins. My choice is Joyce, for a number of reasons, but feel free to suggest your own best options in the comments – I’d love to read them!
• So, the Library Gate have been successfully crossed. Why don’t Erica and Mr. Clark leave Crow’s Nest – isn’t their mission over yet? They watch as soldiers are sent after the party, wonder if our friends will manage to shake them off properly, and don’t even consider leaving their post. My speculation: according to plan, they’re supposed to ensure the group’s safe return to Hawkins, monitor what’s happening at the MAC-Z, report on the situation, and perhaps reopen the gates remotely… Unfortunately for them, Dr. Kay isn’t completely clueless and tracks down the troublemakers who hacked the MAC-Z gates while the trail is still hot.
• A light flashes on the radio station, and Vickie grabs her walkie to talk to Robin.
The UD-RU connection has been established; it was shown on screen. The characters remember this, which is why Vickie even has a walkie-talkie in the first place! They agreed beforehand that they’d stay in touch and let each other know how things were going!
• “What the hell is taking them so long? — I don’t know. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it’s a 500-foot tower.”
Vickie still hasn’t let go of the walkie-talkie. She’s waiting for Robin to check in once the party reaches the top of the tower! I doubt they expected to have a signal in the Abyss, so Robin will let Vickie know before the party heads down there! Like, “Babe, everything’s going according to plan, kisses, we’ll talk when I climb back out of the Abyss… wish me luck!” They agreed to keep each other updated on what’s happening!
But apparently, Robin didn’t do that...
• The radio station is being searched; our redheads have been captured by the military. My heart aches for Vickie at that moment – she tried so hard and did everything she could! Mind you, she didn’t have any relevant experience, and just this morning she had no idea what kind of responsibility would fall on her!
Dr. Kay is studying the plan for the final battle left in the projector. (I envy her... she knows all the details, while I’m left guessing!)
• Henry torments Hopper with visions of Agent Orange and little Sarah, drawing a connection between “the U.S. Army” and “a dead daughter”. Akers and his wolfpack drop by. Kali dies. You see, Hop wasn’t even in the Abyss, didn’t see the monstrous kaiju, didn’t witness Vecna getting his head chopped off… (That lucky bastard Jim... I wouldn't want to see that either, but alas!) While everyone else was completely focused on rescuing the kiddos, Hop appears in a scene with them for the first time right before the epilogue, when the kiddos have ALREADY been rescued – that’s how much his character arc is focused on something else!
El's safety is his main concern, while the kiddos and all supernatural crap are just a sub-concern.
• Oh, right – now Hopper knows about El's suicide plan. He's the only one who knows about it. It's now his responsibility to make sure she has no reason to carry it out.
• Evil has been defeated, the kiddos are safe, yay! Everyone heads down to the UD together. It’s the perfect time for Robin to grab her walkie and tell Vickie something like, “Babe, we’re all alive, I’m going home! Babe, do you copy? Babe?..”
Or maybe Lucas wants to let Max know that the kids are alright? I remember she was really worried about leaving Holly in trouble... He’ll surely rush to cheer her up with the good news as soon as possible!
But no, no one is trying to contact the redheads’ team. After all, if they didn’t get a response, they would suspect that something had happened in Hawkins while they were away...
Let me repeat: they agreed to check in and report on the situation. Vickie didn’t take her eyes off the walkie and was waiting for a signal from Robin. I didn’t make that up – that’s what was shown on screen.
• Then things just getting ultimately ridiculous. Buckle up – this is my favorite part!
If you recall, the whole party set off on the mission in a truck. Murray made a point of stopping near the lab so he could get out there with Hop, El, and Kali. After activating the bomb, Hop and Murray don’t wait for others to come pick them up – which is a shame, because that would have raised such interesting questions as “Where’s that other magical girl?” and “What are those corpses in camouflage lying around with the helicopter wreckage?”
Instead, they take a random car parked near the lab. I wonder if finding a second vehicle to return in was part of the original plan...
Wait a sec, I actually know for sure that it wasn't! If you look at the scheme Dr. Kay saw on the projector, catch the right frame and squint hard enough, you'll make out [Rescue Holly + the kids!!! ...truck back to lab + ...Hop, Murrey] in the lower right corner. So yeah, the second vehicle wasn't included.
And this random car is a Humvee. It's one of those Humvees that Akers and his men arrived in to capture El. The people who killed Kali. It’s their fuckin vehicle.
What is Hopper thinking about while riding in the military vehicle? Maybe the military? No, he wants a cigarette and some sleep!
Fuck my life, I can't take it anymore.
• And finally, as they drove past the bell tower, no one even thought to contact the Crow’s Nest to find out what was going on at MAC-Z, whether Mr. Clark was ready to hack the gates again, and whether it was time for Nancy to take up arms once more (okay, that last point is probably unnecessary; the shootout was a risky and reckless decision the first time around, and now they’ve got a whole truckload of kids...)
“Snookums, do you copy?” – nah, they didn't even try.
At this point, of course, it’s already too late to do anything. My complaint is that they forgot to contact the support team – again!
I can’t even come up with any excuse here, like, “Oh, but Dr. Kay found out their whole plan, so she used force and threats to make Vickie/Mr. Clark/Max/Erica play along as if everything were fine” – because that’s not what I’m seeing on screen! On screen, the party is acting as if there was no plan at all, as if they’re not heading to the military access control zone but to a picnic, and they’re all high as fuck!
They shouldn’t have been breathing in all that UD particles...
All thirty-seven and a half crawls were for nothing; they didn't learn a thing.
For the sake of the shock value in the scene of El's self-sacrifice suicide, Hopper was ruthlessly lobotomized. Man had ONE JOB, and he failed miserably!

Have the DB been asked yet how exactly Hopper planned to sneak El into Hawkins through the MAC-Z without being noticed? Or maybe they explained some of the oddities mentioned above in the documentary?
After all, it would be a shame to miss such an opportunity for a Game of Thrones reference!

Say what you will about high school couples not working out.
But on the morning of November 6, Vickie Dunne was arguing with the soldiers who had arrested her almost-certainly-addict girlfriend, spent the afternoon in another dimension searching for some guy named Dustin (after first surviving an attack by mutant dogs), and spent the night glued to her walkie-talkie like some action-movie hero's wife.
Vickie Dunne was dead serious about her relationship.
I find it actually ironic that it's Hopper who listens to Mike's confession of guilt over not having a real plan.
Because the mission to protect El's life and freedom from the encroachments of the state's military machine was never intended to fall on her sixteen-year-old boyfriend in the first place.
That was her father’s mission, and it’s been made pretty clear from the very first episode of s5.
So if there’s anyone we can count on for a real plan, it’s him.
Hop is a Vietnam veteran himself. He knows how the military operates, how they think. And damn it, he’s pretty good at slipping right under their noses without getting caught!
37 crawls – that’s 74 sneaky trips in a supply convoy – and he wasn’t spotted once! My man walked around MACZ for eighteen months like he owned the place. A real life ninja 👍🏼
That’s what military experience, a good plan, and well-coordinated teamwork are all about.
When he meets El in the UD, he isn’t worried that she rushed off after Demo into what’s likely Henry’s lair to rescue Holly on her own. His main concern is the military. As their two-person team follows Demo’s trail of blood, he keeps going on and on about it.
And the firefight with Akers and his wolfpack proves him right! The military now has sonic weapons against which El is as helpless as a newborn kitten. If the father and daughter had not crossed paths in the UD, El would have been captured right by the Turnbow billboard.
[Hopper] Got that Humvee hid pretty good. If they don’t know it’s missing yet, they will soon. Got more birds. They all got those speakers, whatever they are.
While El, guided by her instinct, pushes us forward through the plot, Hop doesn't want to act on a whim; he keeps suggesting that they return to Hawkins to join the others and carefully plan their next moves.
In 5x07 the party brainstormed ideas on how to get into UD and rescue Holly, who, according to Max, was supposed to have woken up by now. Who reasonably pointed out that going through the MACZ gate wasn't the best option? Jim Hopper!
“A lot easier” – geez, Mike, your optimism is something else 🥲 Go ahead and say “like a side quest” (oh right, you already said that in 5x06 🙈)
Who’s reminding the party that they shouldn’t get caught on the security camera? Good old Jim again!
Hopper is the one who remembers and realizes that the military poses a serious threat.
It was Hopper who saw how Kryptonite affects El; it was he who fought Akers and his wolfpack several times to protect her when she was completely defenseless.
It was Hopper who saw Dr. Kay and her lab with his own eyes. It was with him that she had those interesting conversations about El (which included elements of suffocation), and it was with him that she later got into a hand-to-hand struggle over a gun.
Hopper was the first to see Kali in captivity. The same thing will happen to El if he doesn't protect her.
Agent Orange. The military's cruel experiments led to Hopper losing Sara.
And in the end, the same thing happened to his other daughter.
Yeah, Mike didn't even know that El was planning to stay in the UD. But you know who did? Hopper.
So... did Hopper have a real plan?

I beg you, please share excerpts from the beginning of Episode 6 🙏
Specifically, I’m interested in the moment when Hop, El, and Kali leave the UD. How is this scene described in the script?
I’ve been trying for months to figure out what’s actually going on there.
1) A vacuum suction force rips something large and rectangular out of the ground (a tombstone? A metal “band-aid”? Did the military attach it to the back side too? I’ve never thought about that 🤔). The gate opens up.
2) Hop shouts, “The gate!” (churchgate we’ve earned lol 🥲) The trio moves sideways toward the red glow.
3) The vacuum suction pulls something else big and rectangular out of the gate (a metal “band-aid” from the Rightside Up? It’s sucking like crazy… isn’t there a draft in the RU?)
4) Umm… that’s it. The next time we see the trio, they’re pulling up to WSQK in a hearse of a pleasant green color. (Hop, who’s technically dead, and the girls who’ll die tonight… oh, the irony!)
The most interesting part was left entirely off-screen 😬 And I’d love to see Hop, early in the morning (perhaps under the cover of Kali’s illusions), stealing the hearse from the church parking lot 🙃 I’d also like to know if the gate/rift breach at Roane Hill Cemetery is still glowing with an ominous red light among the graves...

Second, El definitely didn't bring anything on her mission, not even a walkie, so the telemetry tracker can’t track her down.
Joyce has absolutely no idea how those radio things work 😭 She's just like me!
But I've tried to figure it out a little bit – I'd love to hear your thoughts and any clarifications on this topic!
Meanwhile, Hop has a walkie and a tag with him, but since he and El are both MIA, the rest of the party can only hope that father and daughter crossed paths and teamed up in the UD.
By the way, have you ever wondered how things would have turned out if Hop and El had missed each other?
She would have followed Demo to the wall, where Akers would have easily captured her with Kryptonite.
And Hopper would have been trying to get back to Hawkins and wouldn’t have found out that El had gone to the UD until a day later, from Dustin.

[Hopper] Hey, hey, it’s Hop. I copy.
[Dustin] Holy shit! Okay. They’re alive!
Who are “they”? Hopper went crawling alone. Nancy reminds us of this.

[Dustin] El. Is El with you? Over.
Now imagine she's not. She's been caught and is now with Dr. Kay. Holy shit.

Today I asked myself a question and found a possible answer on Reddit.
First they've been tracking Hopper during the crawl cause he had a tag.
Then they've been tracking Demo cause they tagged it in Turnbow house.
But Dustin didn't have a tag with him, did he? Or am I missing smth? Or were they trying to track his walkie, as this redditor suggested?
[Mr. Clarke] As I’ve said, Voyager Gamma, given the uneven terrain and forested nature of Hawkins, a vehicle is simply not the most expedient way to pinpoint a telemetry tag.

One of them is Sara, and the other is, you know... Linda Hamilton 🙃 Sarah Connor!
Imagine this: promising young Sara is kidnapped and raised in the lab. When she grows up, she puts her genius to work for the government. In the future, some kind of apocalypse happens (The Terminator soundtrack is playing 🎧), and Dr. Sara Kay finds a way to travel back in time to save the day. She heads back to the ’80s to find El – a unique girl with unique psychokinetic powers...
That’s why Dr. Kay set up her field lab in the UD: wormholes can transport you to another time! And that’s why she’s free to give orders to Sullivan and Akers while they barely know about her plans: only the very highest-ups know about her origins and her super-duper secret mission here in the ’80s. She’s been granted sweeping authority – cause the future is at stake, you see ☝️🧐
And of course, she doesn’t stand on ceremony when it comes to her cruel methods – what else would you expect from a lady who was raised in a lab? Besides, she’s got an apocalypse on her hands! 🙄
The idea that “Hop” Hopper’s encounter with Dr. Kay in s5e04 is like “Coop” Cooper’s encounter with his much-grown-up daughter Murph in Interstellar – but like, an evil version… That idea makes me giggle 😅
I love my crack theory 🫶 Dr. Kay is just too mysterious. She appeared out of nowhere, spoke in riddles, conducted sinister and mysterious experiments, and disappeared just as mysteriously. She was mysteriously Linda Hamilton 🙃 Maybe among her secrets there was something about the apocalypse after all 👀 or time travel 👀
P.S. Did you know that only in s3 script book/SDH subs Hop's daughter is Sarah with an H? It's not a big deal and means nothing – she was only mentioned once there – but now you know 🔍🦅👁️
