I genuinely don’t understand the idea that how outsiders feel about someone’s wrongdoing should be entirely determined by how the person they wronged feels.

Like. If someone fucked with my best friend, and my friends says it’s cool, they forgive that person, that does not mean I’m cool with that person. I won’t mention it if that bothers my friend, but please, I’ll still be holding that grudge when some necromancer reanimates my bones.

If someone committed a literal, horrible crime, the victims or victims’ families saying “I forgive x” does not mean other people aren’t rightly going to think that person is a fucking monster. “Why do you still have a problem with them, when the victim wants everyone to give them a second chance?” Yeah, victims often do, but that does not negate what that person did. It doesn’t mean most people are going to forget or ignore the information they have about someone’s past and character, or that they should. 

There are ways to respect the feelings of wronged parties without going to “nobody is allowed to think or feel anything if they’re not personally involved.”
