Chapter 2
Virgil
It’s been a week since Thomas left. My mother’s skin seems more grey than the walls of our community building. I haven’t left her side for days, relying on Logan to bring me food and water, which I could barely even stomach. Every once in a while my mother’s eyes would flutter, showing a slight sign of life - a sign there is some hope left - and those were the moments that truly kept me going. But those moments were becoming few and far between.
I rub my mother’s hand, thinking of a simpler time when it was just us and our beloved community. It was a small world, but it was all that I needed. We each had our specific roles and purposes in society and life was perfect. As a child, I hadn’t been assigned a role yet and was still in the school room. My mother, however, had a very dangerous job, not one that I fully understood at the time. Our community has always been incredibly self-sustained, mostly surviving off of food from our own garden and farm. But some things like medicine and books, we just couldn’t make ourselves. So once a month my mother would step outside of our community’s safe dome into the Unknown and exchange food for supplies with merchants. And then one day, she let the merchant inside the dome with his son. To stay.
That was four months ago.
I shook out of my reverie when I heard loud clang from the hallway. Giving my mother’s hand another squeeze, I quickly got up to check what the commotion was all about.
I poked my head out into the darkly lit hallway. Looking from side to side, all I could see were the plain stone walls and a couple of mice. Thinking it must’ve been some children playing games, I was about to shrug it off and go back to the bedside when I heard a voice - not a voice, Logan’s voice - yell out, “please stop, sir!”
Immediately I start sprinting down the hallway, trying to pinpoint where I heard him. When I finally turned a corner, my blood stopped flowing and my whole body began to tingle. Logan was lying on the ground, bloody and bruised, weakly holding his hand up against a horde of my community. “Please,” he whispered, “I haven’t done anything wrong.”
Without even thinking, I jump in between my family and brother. Crap, I thought. What the heck am I supposed to do now?
An gruff man with balding hair and fading scars steps up. “Step aside, Virgil, we’re doing this to help you and your mother.”
“No,” my voice shook. “He’s an innocent person and I won’t forgive any of you if you hurt him.”
“He has brought terror and disease into this community.”
“We don’t even know it was his fault.”
“You’re still just a boy, Virgil, let the adults handle this.”
“He’s my brother.”
“Step. Aside.”
“No!” My voice echoed and rang throughout the silent hallway. There was a moment of unease, no one really knowing how to react to the quiet, brooding boy shouting at them.
The gruff man scowled. “You don’t want us to kill him? Fine. Let nature kill him.” He pushed me aside and grabbed Logan by the arm, yanking him up. “Come on,” he growled.
Not fully understanding, I simply followed Logan’s dragging body down the stairs, out in the garden, and to the edge of our dome. This is when the reality of what was happening finally hit me.
“Please no,” I grabbed the man’s arm, “he doesn’t deserve this.”
“Virgil,” he sighed, “You are too pure and innocent to truly understand the severity of what this boy has done. Please stand back.”
With these words, he opened the large doors that led to the Unknown and tossed Logan to the ground outside.
Slowly, Logan got to his feet. “It’s okay, Virgil. I’m gonna be fine.”
“No! I can’t leave you like this on your own. I’m coming with you.”
“Virgil, your mother is here, you need to be with her-” He closed his mouth before he could finish his sentence, but we all knew what he was going to say anyway. Before she dies. I shut my eyes, hoping to just block out everything going on around me.
“I’m gonna come find you one day, okay? Do me a favor and stay alive until then.”
Sadly, Logan smirked. “Okay, Virgil. Tell mom I said bye.”
And with that, I watched the doors close on Logan’s bloody, smiling face.
The Sides as Fanfic Writers
Logan: When he isn’t writing, he makes very detailed analyses and theories on canon, and 7 times out of 10 he’s spot on. He writes fanfics that could come straight out of canon–to the point that his fans joke that he’s secretly the Creator. Clearly puts a lot of research behind his writing, his grammar is flawless and the characterizations are impeccable and remember that red sippy cup from season 1 episode 13? No? Well he remembers and it somehow becomes a major plotpoint. His fanfics tend to be very plot-heavy, focused on bridging the gap between canon events and fixing canon discontinuities.
Patton: He’s famous on Tumblr for making bad puns and jokes about sad events in canon. Like that character died after getting stabbed w/ a sword? Patton’s the first one posting a crappily edited screenshot of Olaf in Frozen saying “Oh, look at that I’ve been impaled”. All jokes aside, when he writes fanfics, he completely ignores canon deaths. Sometimes the way he sidesteps deaths is questionable but it’s done in such a comical way you can’t help but chuckle. His fanfics tend to be very humorous and fluff. Like the kind of fluff that’ll cause cavities. His specialty is fix-it AUS and gen fic. He’s very Big on Found Family tropes. Every once in a while, he writes actual angst and it Shooks the Entire Fandom to the Core.
Roman: He’s that Fandom Cryptid who’s been blessed in both the writing and drawing departments. He tends to annoy Logan because he hyper-analyses any character interaction as shipping fuel. Those two characters appeared on screen 0.5 seconds together? Ship. Most of the time he does it just to annoy Logan. He is very much a multi-shipper and will ship anything and everything. When he isn’t drawing beautifully gorgeous art, he write fanfics heavily ship-focused. He writes the main pairings, but every once in a while he writes unlikely rare-pairs in such a believable light that he manages to convert others to the ship. His fics tend to be slow-burn, with all the classical shipping tropes which sometimes cause him to be insecure about his writing. His fics have “Love Triumphs All” Happy Endings, but the characters will go through hell to get there.
Virgil: Where do I even start? He has gone through 12 different accounts throughout his life, mainly to escape the cringeiness of his past. Entered fandoms as a young twelve-year-old during his emo, edge-lord phase. Has definitely written fanfics of “My Immortal” level of cringe-fest when he was younger. Got into college a year early because he lied about his age online, to seem more “mature” and then was too embarrassed to admit it when Logan and Patton started asking about how his college applications were coming along. He’s known in the fandom for putting dark twists on happy events in canon, and loves coming up w/ weirdly absurd conspiracies as a joke. His fanfics tend to be angst, but like realistic angst. He writes realistic depictions of mental illnesses that canon usually brushes over. His writing is very vivid and poetic and the narration has a snarky, dry humor to it. Dramatic irony abounds in his fanfics.
Deceit: Chaotic. Always looking to cause drama within the fandom. Is a very toxic shipper and criticizes every little thing of the canon that they disagree with. He’s very passive-aggressive, and is prone to turning the tables on the other parties or just straight up lying. One time someone hacked into Patton’s account, deleted a bunch of fic and was generally very rude to people. He’s never fussed up, but pretty much everyone is certain it was Deceit. Doesn’t tag potential triggers in his fics – ever. Some people theorize that he writes troll fics–because no one would intentionally write such a bad fic on purpose, right?
Remy: His readers are constantly on his tail for staying up until 3am to finish the new chapter of his fic. He’s notorious for shitposting, creating some of the weirdest things in the fandom. One time he paid someone twenty bucks to draw Waluigi x MC art and hasn’t regretted it once. He loves teasing his readers in his author’s notes but also encourages them to get plenty of water and rest advice he fails to take himself half of the time. He has 8 different fanfics ongoing at once and has no set schedule. Fics get updated whenever he feels like it. When he does update, it’s quality writing with a gigantic cliff-hanger that leaves his readers desperately awaiting the next chapter.

oh my god i love this and it’s so spot on i’m dying-
i’m, like, half-virgil tbh. i mean i can’t tell you how many accs i’ve made since i was twelve? not to mention the terrible warrior cats fanfic that i made 37 chapters of before my sister found it and deleted it. and on the rare occasion i do write, it’s usually angst whoops-
but djakslf tl;dr i adore this, everyone please love this, it’s so freaking accurate oml-
#and god now all i can think about#is an au wherein they all meet online#and have a v v messy dscord#and despite being so good at writing it’s like#all text talk#even logan#i mean he’d try at first#but very soon he’d give up rip man#remy isn’t very active on the discord but when he is it’s ch a o s#kdlaf#virgil always brings angst into everything#they could be talking about some cute moments or funny situations#and virgil will find a way to make it angsty#he always apologizes but lately it comes off less sincere the little shi-#roman and logan would be so fun tbh#like logan would post his new chapter and ten seconds later roman is blowing up the chat#he always asks if logan is actually gonna add romance#logan never does ( @fandergecko)
Omg, I’m so glad that most of my cringey writing was done with original work and on old rping forums. I’m probably a weird concoction of Virgil and Patton, tbh. But omg, I AM L I V I N G FOR YOUR TAGS.
Their discord is definitely a mess. Speaking as someone who’s a part of writing discords WE CAN BE VERY MESSY. Logan is the server owner and he tries keeping it organized and tries getting the others to talk about topics in specific channels but it inevitably becomes a sea of chaos sooner or later.
Logan hates text talk and tries to write formally, but when they get into heated debates he loses all form of control and immediately starts keyboarding like “FalSEHOOD AJKDGKSOG”
Remy has definitely been absent for weeks at a time–just long enough to cause some concern from the others but he inevitably always shows up and when he does it’s C H A O T I C. He has, like, the wildest stuff happen to him in irl and the others are never sure if he’s hyperbolizing or telling the honest-to-God truth.
Remy also happens to live across the world from the others and so like, often it’s 4am for the others and he just spams the chat with the weirdest crap.
Virgil definitely always inevitably brings angst into something, and he apologizes for Patton’s sake, initially but now it comes off more as sarcasm.
Roman often draws fanart of the others’ fanfics and constantly apologizes/worries if they’ll like it. Everyone always reassures him that they love it, w/ Patton going “I WILL PHYSICALLY FIGHT YOU”
“Patton, you live all the way in–” “I WILL BOARD A PLANE AND FLY ALL THE WAY OVER TO NEW YORK TO PHYSICALLY FIGHT YOU IF YOU WONT STOP TEARING YOURSELF DOWN”
Roman SO WOULD pester Logan about adding Romance to his story. Logan hates romance–he feels like it distracts from the plot and he is all about the Plot. Often times he will include canonical pairings, for the sake of canon continuity but he doesn’t put the spotlight on them. Roman begs Logan to let him help with making the romance in Logan’s stories more natural but Logan refuses.
One time, the five of them tried writing a fic on google docs and it was a total disaster. A classic “too many cooks in one kitchen” scenario.
Bringing this gem back from the dead
Uh-oh… I’m afraid of which one I am… Thoughts, @holdyourbreathfornow ?
@moonknight1314 Definitely either Remy or Patton. Me?
WHY AM I SO ACCURATELY REMY
Logan: Um, I have a joke to cheer you up.
Patton: You, a joke?
Logan, hesitant: Don’t be sad, because sad backwards is das, and das not good.
Patton:
Logan: …Patton?
Patton, screaming: LOGAN JUST TOLD A JOKE!
Roman, somewhere millions of miles away on an adventure: OH MY FUCKING GOD!
Suave, slow and elegant movements. I can not stop been mesmerized.
Whoooa!
“ tries “ ?
Ok look I don’t have a problem
I tried really hard not to reblog this. I really tried.
I didn’t even try
There’s no point in trying
Patton: *listening to Logan’s voice notes on repeat*
Virgil: how long will you keep listening to that?
Patton: ‘til it stops being sexy?
Virgil: DAD! that’s my teacher! I have to respect him!
Patton: Okay! If it helps, while he’s being sexy, he’s also very grammatically correct?
Virgil: Better. Thank you.
Lol i kinda wanna write something about this
Lol. I took this from a tv show I’m watching and I am living for their relationship.
It was just voicemail about how the teacher misses the other person and to call him back and stuff but that apparently classified as “sexy” lol.
Anyway, if you do, please tag me I’d love to read it.
Thomas: Logan! Patton isn’t here! You have to pretend to be my dad for Joan’s dad!
Logan (takes the phone): Hellooo. This…. is dad Sanders.
Logan: Yes. The children are playing swords.
Logan: Sorry, playing with swords.
Logan: They’re bleeding! Oh nooo… They are dead.
Logan: Don’t call again. *Hangs up*
Logan (Hands Thomas the phone): Sorry, I panicked.

Summary: Virgil’s world is constantly changing. Virgil must now venture out into the world for the first time in attempt to keep his family, and his sanity, together. Follow Virgil, Logan, Roman, Patton, and Thomas along their journey in this dangerous world they live in.
Chapter One
Virgil
My mother’s hands were incredibly cold, even when they were wrapped safely in my hand. I watched her as she slept, every breath rattling her fragile body.
“Virgil.”
Subtly wiping tears from my eyes, I turn to see Logan standing in the doorway. He stood proud as usual, with his chin up and his hands tucked neatly behind his back.
“How is she?”
The lump in my throat tightens as I turn back to the sleeping form. “Not great. The plague seems to be taking over faster than usual.”
There was silence for a moment, and I almost turned to see if he had left, but then I felt a hand being awkwardly placed on my shoulder. “I understand if you blame my father and I for this,” Logan began, eyes downcast. “I know that it is essentially unheard of to marry into another community, especially when we could bring the plague upon you.”
I looked up at Logan with his jaw clenched and lips pursed. I put my hand on his. “I don’t blame you for anything. I’m glad I met you, and I know my mom was so much happier after she met Thomas.”
Logan’s eyes met mine and for an instant, everything was okay.
“Come on,” Logan said. “You haven’t eaten anything for a while.”
I gave my mother’s hands one last squeeze before getting up and following Logan to the cafeteria.
Walking into the community’s cafeteria has been an adventure these past couple of months. First, people would stare and whisper because I was the boy whose mother married an outsider. Then, people would send pitying looks my way after my mother became bedridden. Now, it’s a strange mix of both, pity for my circumstance and inevitable loss, but also contempt for not allowing the community to kick out Logan and Thomas.
I trail behind Logan’s confident form, trying to hide in his shadow as we go to the food line.
“Your mother’s foolishness has put us all in grave danger.” I snap my head up at the sound of an old man’s voice. An old man, the one who taught me the alphabet when I was a babe, blocked me and Logan from sitting down. “If she hadn’t let these wretches into our safe, closed community,” he glared at Logan, “we would not be living our lives in a constant state of fear right now. If I had it my way, none of you would be standing here contaminating the air around us.”
“Sir,” Logan stepped forward, “I understand your reasoning, but at this point everyone here is just as possible as being infected as myself and my family. There is simply no reason to cause mayhem.”
The old man’s eyes bulged, a vein prominently showing in his forehead. “No reason? I’ll show you right your reasoning can -”
“Edward.” A third, calm and authoritative voice joined the altercation. “Please have a seat. My sons and I must discuss departure plans at once.”
A collective murmur broke out among the cafeteria as this new information was processed. Thomas, my stepfather, calmly came up behind me and Logan and guided us past the stunned man toward a table.
“What do you mean, leaving?” I exploded upon sitting down. “We can’t leave my mom here like this, Thomas, don’t you love her?”
Thomas’ head sank, and I noticed the prominence of the bags under his eyes and the sagging of his shoulders that only true grief can cause. “Of course, I love her more than anything in this world, Virgil. But that’s exactly why I must leave.”
Logan leaned forward, “You? You can’t leave by yourself father, it’s far too dangerous. What about the guards, or the resistance? Anything can happen out there.”
A fire lit in Thomas’ eyes that I had not seen for a while. “My safety doesn’t matter. I need to find a cure for her before it’s too late. I’m leaving tonight.”
“Tonight?” Logan stood up, bewildered. “But we haven’t planned anything yet! Just wait a couple of days and the number of variables we could eliminate-”
“Logan,” Thomas cut in, “I appreciate the concern, but my mind is made up. Your mother simply does not have enough days left for us to spare planning my journey. I must leave at once.”
Logan and I looked at each other, completely at a loss for what to say or do.
Thomas stood up. “Come help me pack, boys.”
