someone commented on my edit that stratt would have seen 40 eridani return to its full brightness and she would know that grace had saved erid.

it takes 16 years for light from 40 eridani to reach earth plus the ~26 years it took for the hail mary to reach tau ceti and the beetles to return, that’s 42 years gone by.

i believe stratt was described as being in her mid to late forties which means that by the time light from 40 eridani reached earth, she would likely be around 90 years old.

my new head cannon is that she held on just long enough to see whether grace made it.

You’ve heard of “you don’t even have a dog” and now for the Marissa fans out there might I suggest people saying to her post-launch:

“You weren’t even together.”

Marissa being legitimately heartbroken and everyone seeing her grieving and unless they happen to know both her and Ryland the FIRST thing they ask is almost always “Were the two of you an item?”

And when she says no then it becomes “did you want to be?” “did you see him as a brother instead?”

Marissa feeling hurt and frustrated because isn’t it enough that they were friends? Is twenty years of late night conversations, inside jokes, tears, laughter, Thursday dinners like clockwork—is that not enough to say she loved him, plain and simple? Is she not allowed to grieve this way, like a piece of her was torn out without anyone even telling her?

But star-crossed love isn’t for friends, they say. It just doesn’t make a good story.

PSA: no name is impossible to pronounce. no name is too hard to learn, no name is justifiably butchered. kids with 'different' names should be taught again and again that being called by their name is a right, not a privilege

there are over 2000 unique phonemes (individual sounds) in the world’s languages, and each language has anywhere from around 20 to 60. you stop learning new phonemes it’s theorized at around age 12. this is where accents come from -- using your own language’s/region’s phonemes to speak

so no name is impossible to pronounce world-wide, but it is very easy to not have the linguistic archive necessary to pronounce a given name entirely correctly. it is a simple case of physically not knowing where to place your tongue, whether or not to vibrate your vocal chords, etc. the only one of the dictators of sound you could be shown is how to position your lips

that being said... obviously you should still try. saying a name as correctly as you physically can goes a long way for making someone feel respected and humanized, and dismissing a name entirely as too hard goes a long way to disrespect and dehumanize people. just also accept that someone’s accent interfering with their pronunciation isn’t a sign of lack of trying, but a sign of physical limits

This is very true. I met a baby at my old store whose name was Navajo. I did my best and actually got a bit frustrated because there was a syllable I could NOT get, and her dad was like “it’s very hard if you don’t actually speak Diné, but thank you. Most people won’t even try.”

listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious
