Hhhhhh when the house is haunting you. When you finally escape it but it (the house, the structure, the anchored thing, it) follows you impossibly. When you've gotten out and you're free and you're somewhere unsettling but finally different and new and no, you recognise this turn. You recognise the angle of this wall. The placement of this bathroom. The familiarity is sickening and this is the house again. When it wears different masks and parades different furniture but it cannot change the bars (brick walls, windows, mortar, cement, load bearing foundations, frames, floor plan,) of your prison. Your den has turned into your coffin. Forever looping on itself. When it is never going to stop being the house, and you don't really need to leave, anyway.
In my 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞, straight up ing it
And by "it" haha. I mean.

Some fan art for myhouse, been utterly captivated by it
myhouse.wad spoilers (incomprehensible if you haven’t played it (WHICH YOU SHOULD DO)),
But here’s some YouTube comments that shortened my lifespan by 27 hours
The myhouse fanart I did got an unexpected amount of attention, so have some variations on the idea Go read House of Leaves, and go tell your friends and family how much they mean to you
MyHouse.wad: over double the file size of the original Doom 2, warps the game reality into loops, has an enemy with 999,999,999,999 hit points, the backrooms, also you kill Shrek
Doom Guy at the bottom of the screen the entire time: 🤨😐
at the back of the party muttering they don't know that the addition of a giant scary shrek in the preschool level of myhouse.wad isn't for le epic meme reasons but rather a lampoon of how subgenres of horror that become popular on the internet such as liminal spaces quickly become parodies of themselves through a memetic game of telephone that results in the genre's defining elements being watered down to complete absurdity, which usually results in some flavor of "what if a thing that is normally fun or comforting was actually scary, wouldl that be fucked up or what"
My GroverHouse of Leaves has People in It.wad
in like a The Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons way
Been watching videos on myhouse.wad and it's like... Okay, obvious inspiration was House of Leaves. Like, yeah, of course. But what's great is that it knows exactly what makes House of Leaves so effective. It's not the story of the impossible geometry of the house. It's how there are multiple narratives going on. Yes, there's The Navidson Record. But did you ever read just the footnotes? There's a completely different story going on.
And then did you read the two together, just everything on the page before going to the next one?
There are three stories going on at the same time: The Navidson Record, what is happening to Johnny, and then the story of how the two weave together.
Myhouse.wad doesn't forget that. Yeah, the titular house has impossible geometry. But the actual story creeps out of the game and into the files. And then into the story of you playing it, and how you interact with it.
My favourite part is the fact that House of Leaves leans into the medium. The story starts to affect how the pages look and how it's formatted. And so does myhouse.wad! It leans into how impossible it should be to make Doom be able to do this. The impossible geometry isn't just ooh look at this door, it's "wait hold on Doom can't do that how is this happening?"
Myhouse.wad understands what House of Leaves did beyond ooh scary impossible house. And I think it proves any medium could pull this off... You just need to understand said medium.
And then make it do the impossible while weaving the story into the story of you watching/reading/listening/playing it.
"Oh man, I sure do wonder what Fraud is gonna look like."
The House:

Absolute big fan of horror media that take advantage of the games they are using as a medium to tell its story. Obviously there would be the Minecraft ARG that Wifies highly publicized through his "Searching For a World That Doesn't Exist" video, how it beautifully makes you uneasy through the grass spreading indicating chunks loading meaning that someone was there, but also using it for some comedic effect such as "Unfortunately for you, I have a pickaxe". But another great example would be My House.wad, its just an absolutely phenomenal and creative way of tackling the story of two childhood friends, the implied abuse that happened in that house, the grief and depression that followed soon after the MC's childhood friend dies, how it was a house and never a home. Admittedly, I am not a big doom fan, but even I was unsettled by how in the second run, the door animation changes, how the avatar is now taller, how there are more frames in your gun shooting animation -- all adding to this surreal and uncanny feeling building in your gut. Obviously, My House.wad unsettles you using its game mechanics in more ways, but I'm not gonna tackle them all in this post. Would love to see more media that just takes advantage of the game mechanics to unsettle you. No jumpscares or creepy music or etc., just taking what is familiar and concrete and flipping it over your head.
Almost finished reading house of leaves.
Anyone know if there’s a genre for this sort of horror or any suggestions? I’m looking for more things with the same vibe as the following;
House of leaves
Myhouse.wad
This house has people in it
Skinamarink (I highly recommend checking out Kyle Edward Ball’s other works on YouTube while high at “bitesizednightmares”)
Heck (Kyle’s much shorter YouTube-version of skinamarink)
Now that I’m almost finished, I’ve been having very strange and intense dreams reminiscent and even referencing some of these things
very threatening tweet for fans of houses
