My question to Ken Stott at Hobbitcon (yeah it’s the Bagginshield one)
So, for those who weren’t there, and wanted to know the context of Ken’s quote, here’s what happened:
Me: Hi, I have a question for Ken. In the end of “The Battle of Five Armies” when Bilbo is about to leave Erebor, he says goodbye to Balin and Balin tells him that “Thorin Oakenshield will become a legend”. And Bilbo says “To me, he never was. He was…” and then Bilbo doesn’t quite finish his sentece and doesn’t say what Thorin was to him, but Balin gives him this this look, as if he knew what Bilbo was about to say. I was wondering, what was going through Balin’s mind in that moment?
Ken: Well… Balin knew what Thorin felt for Bilbo.
*audience cheers*
Ken: And I think he wanted to let Bilbo know… that Thorin held him in such high regard… That’s what I think he was doing.
so what ken stott’s saying is that when bilbo tries to explain what thorin was to him in this scene:
balin gives him this look that in fact means ‘thorin felt the same way about you’:
SO YOU’RE TELLING ME BILBO REALIZES AT THIS MOMENT THAT HIS FEELINGS WERE RECIPROCATED?? WHEN THIS IS TOO LATE????
(gifs by x)
😔😔😔
The problem with being in the hobbit fandom is that, usually, the phrase "ring in his pocket" foreshadows a proposal, and reading it puts that little warm fuzzy feeling in your stomach, until you remember that this is the one ring and every thing is not actually warm and fuzzy
Bilbo: *flirts with someone*
Thorin: excuse me, I have to go make a scene

There’s no text here and it still manages to make a very compelling argument.
Gimli, pre-quest: i hate elves. elves are stupid. noone trusts an elf. all elves can fuck off
Gimli, post-quest:
I like to think Aragorn said this a lot when he was living with the elves 🧝🏻♂️
Do you ever lie awake wondering how the heck Gimli knows what a nervous system is
Clearly dwarves have medical knowledge far more advanced than that of the other races.

i know i’m too late for this but i couldn’t resist
older lotr illustrations sometimes depict éowyn wearing ridiculously small armour. apart from the problem general sexualisation of the only female character (who really does anything), there’s another hilarious thought:
éowyn pretended to be dernhelm, a man. to fit in, she must have worn men’s armor. so the armor in the illustrations is normal for rohirrim.
therefore, all the rohirrim rode to war just like that:
there’s a thundering sound in the distance as the rohirrim ride into war but rather than hoofbeats it’s the collective sound of all their cheeks clapping
the artist for this particular piece is Frank Frazetta and to be fair to him this is how he drew the orcs armor
so the rohirrim comment is probably not that far off
THIS TAG KNOCKED ME OUT
As we all know, everybody lived after the BoFA. Thorin got a few cuts and Bilbo’s sustained the worst injury when his leg was injured stepping in to help defend Thorin against Azog. Thorin carries Bilbo down Ravenhill bridal style and everybody comes running up to celebrate their victory and they all Iive happily ever after. Pretty sure that’s how the movie and book end.
That’s it that’s all he ever does
Spring has come!
