The new Ao3 wank I can't escape is that it sounds like the site has 1.5 million in funds and someone in a finance meeting said that could keep them running for 2-3 years. This is a "suspicious" and "unheard of" amount of money for a nonprofit to have, and I'm hearing all sorts of overblown takes about how it's proof that OTW is run by a bunch of clueless and incompetent people and no one should donate to them again. e.o

Friendly reminder that AO3 is the 7th most popular arts/entertainment website on earth. That means AO3 gets more traffic than Disney Plus, more traffic than Hulu, more than Prime Video, more than Wattpad, more than HBOmax, more than Soundcloud [source].

All of those other websites I listed are for-profit. All of them take in advertising revenue and/or paid subscription revenue. AO3 doesn’t have any of that. AO3 relies entirely on donations.

No one should not be surprised that the 7th most popular arts/entertaintment website on the planet costs millions of dollars to run.
