I just learned how to play Risk, and I’m dominating. I’m not a strategist by any means… Which means I had to document this game.
Some nice pictures of the default RISK board game.
I feel pretty confidant in saying that you have played Monopoly at some point in your life. Monopoly is probably the most prolific trademarked game in the United States, if not the world, and its reach is surprisingly far. Most of the authors of this site when introducing themselves mentioned Monopoly in some capacity, mostly one of scorn or derision. I also feel safe in saying that most people don't enjoy Monopoly, no matter what kind of nonsense license they slap on the properties, it is really just an antiquated game that takes forever and isn't really any fun to play.
So when Port Supply Company, the makers of Conglomerate, approached the site about doing a review of their soon-to-be Kickstarted game that seemed to be a modern take on that decrepit "classic", I was dubious to say the least.

Clue's usual suspects, 1972 US Edition
My grandma had this copy of Clue at her house, so this is the one that's iconic to my childhood. Even though we bought one of the late 90s versions for ourselves.
We thought this student's graphic design project was really cute and couldn't help but share it with you. What an adorable game board!

Funding the Jewel of India
The ancient city of Jaipur is a popular modern tourist destination for a reason. The host of remarkable architecture, a World Heritage site and many other wonders, it is a valuable addition to our global culture. The game that carries that city's name is equally beautiful, and at about $20 MSRP it is a deal of a game and a perfect choice for this week's $20 Quick Pick.

Next we played Targui, a game I like more each time I play it. Rules are now well known and we almost never forget to apply tribes card special effects :D
Victory 41 vs 30 VP thanks to my camp building organization : three full lines, one of targuia cards and two of 4 different kinds cards which also were worth 4 VP thanks to one of my targuia special power!
In a Galaxy Far Far Away...
After negotiating pre-registration for Nerdtacular 2013, and finally getting a tasty burger, Matt "The Favorite" and I sat down to play the X-Wing Miniatures Game. This is a rather well done skirmish or even large scale battle game set in the Star Wars universe, that uses some play mechanics I had experienced earlier with Crimson Skies, through WizKids.

Grosse partie de Sankt Petersburg avec ma très chère 308 à 255 points :D Je trouve le jeu très beau mais ça commence à prendre pas mal de place !

Great game of Sankt Petersburg with the wife 308 vs 255 VP :D The game is beautiful but takes some space !
One of our favorite games here at Across the Board Games: St. Petersburg!
$20 Quick Pick: Battle Line
I now have a new favorite game! I would like to present Battle Line! I never thought that my adolescent obsession with Alexander the Great and RummiKub would come together into a harmonious game. Battle Line is a dressed-up RummiKub with strategy cards and a loose historical theme of Alexander the Great. This game doesn't have any story attached. This is a two player game, a Darius versus Alexander, battle waged on nine fronts.

Law and Games: Copyrighting Games
A lot of people have some basic understanding (and mis-understanding) of how the law applies to issues in gaming. As an attorney who has spent a considerable amount of time researching the intersection of law and gaming, I thought it would be appropriate to spend some time talking about it for all of those out there who may want to design and publish their own game.

Space: the Convergence
As I wrote last week, I consider theme to be a very important element of any game. Theme is just as important to a game becoming well loved as mechanics and art, and it can change the way you feel about the game while playing it. Recently I've been involved with drastically changing the theme, and only the theme, to a very popular game and I'd like to show you what I've learned.

Epic Custom Magic Night: Fixing a Broken Mechanic
Throughout the years, Magic has tried to work around the problems inherent in the resource system. Some cards, such as dual-colored lands, ease the restriction on the resource type. Others, such as those that let you search your deck for land cards, make it easier to get the resource-providing cards that you need. One set even took a radical leap and introduced a mechanic for which some cards could be played without the basic resource (mana) at all. But, as a general rule, Magic: The Gathering rarely ever strays too far from the fundamental resource mechanic.
Why is it important that I lay this out? This was my challenge. This was my quest. I set out to fix the "broken" resource mechanic.

FINAL FANTASY BOSS BATTLE—THE CARD GAME THAT WE DESERVE (BUT WON’T GET)
David Goh (known for his revisiting video game series) and his girlfriend both enjoy Final Fantasy and board games. When her birthday came along David decided to make her a Final Fantasy board game complete with 300 playing cards, 83 unique designs, a game manual, and a custom-made box.
Of course since this isn’t licensed by Square-Enix we’ll never play the game ourselves and we are left living vicariously through David and his girlfriend.
While it doesn't make the game more fun to play, it certainly makes it a lot more pretty! What a wonderfully well done up Fallout board.
Doctor who Guess who game - in thé making #dw
This is a cool project that wouldn't take long to set up and makes a thoughtful, informal gift to a Dr Who fan. Though if you like this you'd probably also like our "Play This Instead" article about a newer, more difficult way to revisit this mechanic: Play This Instead Clue / Guess Who.
