So I was thinking about those tongue-in-cheek posts about Hogwarts Houses that are like “So, uh, why are we dividing the kids up again?” and I started thinking what if there were actually practical differences for sorting the kids by personality? Such as catering to different learning styles in the classroom.

Like, Gryffindor classes are very hands-on and encourage kids to experiment and explore on their own.

Hufflepuff is more discussion-based and involves a lot of small-group projects that aren’t graded so much as evaluated by peers.

Ravenclaws have general topics and principles that need to be covered every year, but within that, each student is encouraged to learn in-depth about specific topics of their own interest.

Slytherins are very goal-oriented and while some competitiveness against each other is encouraged, they’re mostly rewarded for self-improvement. 

Just, you know, actual qualitative differences in the Houses.

Hufflepuff is staying up all night giggling with friends. It’s the sleepy “I love you” at the end of a five hour phone call. It’s a significant other running their fingers through your hair during a Sunday picnic. It’s finding a baby bird with a broken wing and nursing it back to health. It’s smiling at a stranger on the subway. Hufflepuff is picking flowers off of trees and tying them into your friend’s hair. Its wiping the sweat from your forehead after a long day’s work. It’s freshly baked bread and golden sunlight flooding through the windows. Hufflepuff is loving food way too much and crying with friends and loving until it hurts.

Gryffindor is laughing so loudly that strangers stare at you. It’s playing truth or dare at three in the morning. It’s running around like crazy people with your lover. It’s catching fireflies on a warm summer night. It’s complimenting a stranger’s crazy hair color and feeling so good when they smile. Gryffindor is hurling toilet paper over someone’s yard then laughing so hard it hurts. It’s standing up to a childhood bully. It’s unhealthy amounts of candy and fiery red sunsets. Gryffindor is being an adrenaline junkie and trying to do what’s right and getting back up after being knocked down .

Ravenclaw is 3am conversations about the meaning of life. It’s having a small close knit circle of friends who would die for each other. It’s longing to touch your lover’s soul. It’s googling pictures of llamas in tuxedos when you actually got online for a research paper. It’s feeling an instant bond with a stranger who’s wearing a band or tv show t-shirt. It’s being quirky and not caring. Ravenclaw is drinking coffee at 11pm. It’s effortlessly acing classes that you’re interested in. It’s dusty sheet music and a starry night sky. Ravenclaw is being obsessed with a certain book or show and pouring your soul into your work and expressing yourself creatively.

Slytherin is being willing to kill for the people you love. It’s having 3am gossip sessions with your best friend. It’s staring into your significant other’s eyes and instantly knowing what they’re thinking. It’s daydreaming about what the future holds. It’s always having a twinkle in your eye because you’re always one step ahead. It’s the thrill you get when you’re playing strategic board games. Slytherin is putting up walls because you feel things so deeply. It’s people being attracted to your mysterious vibe. It’s a waterfall in the middle of nowhere and an ambitious dream. Slytherin is being a natural leader and being successful and loving so much more than you let on.

Shakespeare plays as Hogwarts Houses?

Okay, this was hard. The only Shakespeare plays I'm familiar with is R+J and Merchant of Venice so I had to do some research. I know I picked the more well known plays, but I picked them because their plots appealed to me the most.

Gryffindor: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Gryffindor likes this play for the simple reason of it's just some faeries messing with people and it's funny. That's it.

Ravenclaw: Hamlet

Hamlet's entire character is intriguing to Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw enjoys the ponderous Hamlet who is also kinda out there murdering people. He's a dark horse who speaks to ghosts and they like it.

Hufflepuff: Twelfth Night

A cross-dressing comedy with a love triangle. Nuff said.

Slytherin: Macbeth

Slytherin likes Macbeth's ambition, not enough to forget Macbeth's poor choices and paranoia though... But it's dark, there's some murdering happening and a dash of emotional turmoil. Slytherin is into it.

Percy Jackson: Hufflepuff

Percy’s fatal flaw is loyalty, one of Hufflepuff’s core traits. You may argue that loyalty is also a Slytherin trait but Slytherin loyalty is more radical and is usually loyalty to an idea or a tribe instead of friends. Percy is also very fair, he made sure that the gods were fair to demigods.

Annabeth Chase: Slytherin

Annabeth is clever, she is able to defeat every monster she meets using manipulation and cleverness. She is ambitious, she wants to be the architect to the gods and her fatal flaw is pride.

Grover Underwood: Hufflepuff

His entire job was helping people find safety with a new family and he is kind and hardworking.

Jason Grace: Gryffindor

Jason is brave and chivalrous but would save the world over his friends. He is a true Gryffindor

Piper McLean: Slytherin

With her charm speak, she can manipulate people quite easily. She is also very independent. She does however rely on her emotions more than some other Slytherins.

Leo Valdez: Ravenclaw

Leo is creative and loves learning. A lot of people sort him into Gryffindor but that’s because he has ADHD.

Lavinia Asimov: Gryffindor

Lavinia is brave and selfless in times of war but is also feisty and funny.

Frank Zhang: Hufflepuff

Frank is super nice and hardworking.

Hazel Levesque: Gryffindor

She’s super brave and fierce.

Thalia Grace: Hufflepuff

Thalia is so brave that she sacrificed herself to save her friends. She is also fierce but has a great sense of humor and is very competitive.She also acted as a guardian for Annabeth.

Reyna Avila Remirez-Arellano: Slytherin

Reyna is a natural lead and amazing strategist. She must always stay strong for the sake of her people. She is also very similar to Annabeth.

Nico Di Angelo: Gryffindor

Nico is very brave and selfless but his depression and anger after Bianca’s death makes people think he’s a Slytherin.

Rachel Dare: Ravenclaw

Rachel is artsy and creative. She stands up for her beliefs and is ok with being different.

Will Solace: Hufflepuff

Will is kind and honest and a born leader after being thrust into that position after the death of his brothers.

Magnus Chase: Hufflepuff

Magnus cares a lot about his friends and will do anything to save them including fighting his friends abusive fathers and beating enemies by yelling about how much he loves his friends.

Alex Fiero: Slytherin

Alex is clever and ambitious and will fight everyone. She also died saving someone she didn’t know.

Samirah Al Abass: Slytherin

Sam is a very ambitious person, she wants to be the first female Muslim pilot. She is also very invested in family and tradition.

TJ: Gryffindor

He cannot walk away from a bet and is impulsive, grudge-holding, and brave.

Hearthstone: Ravenclaw

He’s learning to do magic just so that he can, which is a very Ravenclaw trait. He loves learning and creativity.

Blitzen: Hufflepuff

Loves his friends.

Kaz Brekker: Slytherin

Kaz is clever and cunning, he can come up with intricate cons and heists that only on he understands. Kaz follows nobody’s rules but his own. His main motivations in the books and money and vengeance. I thought Kaz might be a Ravenclaw because of his love for puzzles but I think Slytherin is better.

Inej Ghafa: Gryffindor

Inej is incredibly brave and risks her life to save her friends time and time again. She is loyal to her culture and family and obeys the moral code she raised on. Inej manages to be brave despite her terrible past.

Nina Zenik: Gryffindor

Nina is brave and loyal to her friends. She is also very independent and knows her own mind.

Matthias Helvar: Hufflepuff

Matthias is kind, hardworking, and loyal to what believes in. He started off as a brain-washed, hating, zealous soldier but with some work became a better person.

Wylan Van Eck: Ravenclaw

Wylan is creative and artsy and is always coming up with creative solutions to problems. Wylan’s dyslexia does not stop him from being an amazing artist and chemist.

Eleanor cares so much about her friends, she’s do anything to help them.She refused to go to the good place without her friends. She is a hardworker, she was able to declare independence at a young age and she did well at work. Some people sort her into Slytherin because she can be mean and brutally honest but her generosity and work ethic shows she’s a true Hufflepuff

Chidi has spent his entire life in pursuit of truth and knowledge which is a very Ravenclaw thing to do. He obsesses about a single subject for years at a time. Some say he’s a Hufflepuff for his hardworkingness and love of rules but his reason for both behaviors stem from his passion for knowledge.

Tahani Al-Jamil: Slytherin

Tahani is ambitious and cunning and is very loyal to a single idea.

Jason Mendoza: Gryffindor

Jason is very kind and supportive but he isn’t a Hufflepuff due to his laziness and disregard for laws. Jason is very impulsive and brave and he will fight to save his friends.

Michael: Gryffindor???

I’m not totally sure about this. Michael is incredibly kind and loyal. He often tries to be cunning but fails especially when running the neighborhood. He is also brave. Send in suggestions or arguments for Michael.

Janet: Hufflepuff

Janet is literally programmed to help people and to be kind. She has none of that Ravenclaw drive for knowledge because she already knows everything. She is also loyal and honest

There are Slytherins who pluck petals from the daisy stems and giggle at love. Who write poetry about the stars and sunsets. There are Slytherins who are afraid of getting their ears pierced. Slytherins who wear bright colors: greens, and yellows, and pinks. There are Slytherins who cry, and there are Slytherins who will smile through the pain regardless. There are Slytherins who always make sure to perfect their makeup and Slytherins who wear slippers into public. I just find it funny that people think Annabeth would be Ravenclaw

Hogwarts sorts people into houses based on what they value more than what they are. If people were sorted based on what they are, Ron, Harry, and Hermione would in no way be Gryffindor.

Let’s not talk about why she would be Ravenclaw purely because she’s smart. Let’s instead talk about how she would be the most Slytherin fucking person. Her fatal flaw is literally her ambition, as seen when she was listening to the sirens and described what she saw as a family picnic with Luke in a New York that she designed from scratch based on ancient Grecian architecture.

The gods offered Percy a chance at being a god, which is what they all assumed he wanted more than anything. What did Annabeth want more than anything? The chance to build something long before the time it would become expected of her and they let her redesign Olympus rather than just going to her mother, a goddess of architecture. More than anything, she wanted her ambitions to come through.

She values ambition far more than most other traits that demigods possess. And what are Slytherins? Ambitious.

You know, this description actually makes sorting a hell of a lot easier.

The hogwarts houses an unofficial study:

recently I made my friends take the pottermore quiz, They all had vastly different results and I wanted to share my theory on how they solved the quiz and what it says about the decisionmaking proces of each house.

1. Gryffindor:

The gryffindor lets their emotions guide them when making a decision. They have the opposite decision making proces to a slytherin. They are at times hard to predict for this reason. They are usually the fastest to solve the quiz because they trust their gut and have a lot of faith in themselves. This results in going with their first instinct when making a decision. They are incredibly curious, they go with which answer at first attracts them and can be impulsive.  When a challenge is presented, they HAVE to meet it.  

F.ex.  A gryffindor will choose the unassuming box with “I only open for the worthy’, because it sparks their curiosity immediately and challenges them.

2. Slytherin:

A slytherin takes emotion out of every decision. They will make an extremely logical and calculated response. They are focused on the immediate question without thinking too far ahead about the consequences of that action. Not because they are bad people but because their emotions don’t come in play when they think of the possible outcome.  (Doesn’t mean they won’t have them, but they usually won’t weigh them in when making a decision).

F.ex. often a slytherin will choose the power to read minds, which is one of the hardest powers to bear, because of the mental torment of knowing what people you love think about you at all times.  They won’t take how they feel into account, they won’t think of it when making the decision.  

Slytherins are opposite to gryffindors in the sense that they often won’t think of the danger they are getting themselves into when they choose a certain path, while Gryffindors are brave exactly because they see the danger, but will choose to face it (if not always for selfless reasons).  A Gryffindor will run towards danger, a Slytherin will wait for danger to come to them without blinking, because they are not easily scared.

3. Hufflepuf:

When hufflepufs solve the quiz their line of thinking goes: ‘how will my answer affect other people in this scenario?’ or ‘how will I feel about myself in a year when I look back on this decision’.

Their decisionmaking is very practical and grounded in the real - life consequences. Hufflepufs won’t go for the easy out, they think it through from as many possible viewpoints, to make sure their decision won’t unfairly disadvantage or hurt someone else.  They are the house that carries the most guilt, because their line of thinking shows them everyone that will be hurt over their actions, even in the most insignificant way.  This is a heavy weight on a person so they are the most cautious house, not because they are scared for themselves, but because they are scared for others.

F. ex. A hufflepuf will choose the box with a squeaking creature inside, because it might suffocate, die or suffer if it stays in the box. This is the outcome that will come to mind, not “which box sounds coolest”.

4. Ravenclaw:

A ravenclaw thinks outside of the box. The box isnt even there for them. They have come up with a possible outcome of the decision that wouldn’t have crossed your mind in a million years. 

They will always choose mystery because they can imagine a million amazing things to be contained within a mysterious item. They wont go for the ‘Sure thing’ because they are too enticed by ‘possibility’. They aren’t bound by the limits that other houses have regarding imagination, they aren’t bound by the same reality.  Their reality is more broad and they see more possibilities. 

F.ex. They will save a mysterious book of runes instead of a nearly perfected cure for dragonpox for that exact reason. 

It was interesting to see how the houses are each others opposites:

Slytherin: logical decisionmaking

VERSUS

Gryffindor: emotional decisionmaking.

AND

Hufflepuf: grounded in reality making decisions.

VERSUS

Ravenclaw: imaginative, boundless decisionmaking.

But the Houses that are opposite also have something crucial in common:

both gryffindor and slytherin both seem more short term minded in their decisions and more egocentric, thinking: “how would this affect me/my loved ones right now”. 

VERSUS

 Hufflepuf and Ravenclaw are both focused on the long term consequence of their actions and the bigger picture: “what will be the consequences in the far of future for everyone”.  

As a final remark i would like to point out that this was just for fun, and it is perfectly possible that you are a member of a house without falling into these boxes I have sketched out.  And you don’t have to be!  I just hope some of you recognized yourselves, and for those that didn’t: I hope you’re happy too and just had fun reading this and disagreeing.  

And with that last part I have proven what a huge hufflepuf I am so… *shrug*
