The Romanticization of the “First Apartment”
News Flash: Your first apartment is going to be many things, but perfect isn’t one of them. As someone who is on their third apartment, you should know that your first apartment will suck, because you don’t know what’s important to you yet. But you will. Here are some things to consider about your first place.
Know that there will be bugs. Ants, cockroaches, etc. will be a fixture in your first apartment. Unless you are paying out the rear for a super fancy place, which is ridiculous, but whatever, you will encounter little buggy friends. Avoid this by keeping your place reasonably clean, take the trash out frequently, and try not to keep piles of paper everywhere. This helps a lot with keeping them at bay. Or keep a can of raid on you. That helps too.
Choose what is going to work best for you. Do you have a car? If not, find a place that is close to stores (clothing and grocery) and a Laundromat if your apartment doesn’t have a washer/dryer. I have been lucky enough to have lived in apartments that came with a washer/dryer, but that is an amenity that I have rented from the complex. Do you rely on public transit? Check what routes go by your place. I didn’t realize that my first complex didn’t go to the main shopping plaza in town until after I moved in. And I was grateful at my second apartment, there was a grocery store literally right outside the front gates.
Decide how much you want to spend early and do your research. Some complex’s bundle internet and utilities into your rent, others don’t. Check with your complex FIRST rather than later about this. Suppose you want to find a place for under $500. Does this include utilities/internet? If yes, you need to check whether your place bundles or not. Because if they don’t, you should actually be looking for a place that is closer to $400 to allow for these things.
And finally, VISIT THE PLACE BEFORE YOU SIGN A LEASE. My first apartment was situated so I had zero natural light and the one window faced a hallway, so I could never leave the blinds open. This is something I realized I hated only after moving in. And I didn’t visit the place before moving in, so I could have at least seen the problem beforehand. The carpet and furniture provided was also dreary and ugly, and while I didn’t mind the apartment, I also didn’t enjoy living there.
I’m going to talk in a later post about what you actually need for an apartment, useful things to have, how to pack if you’re moving in just a car, etc.
I hope this helped. If you have questions, let me know!
Love,
M
College Recon: Your GPA
So you’re in the middle of your third (or whatever) semester of school, staring at your GPA, and it isn’t good. At all. I have news for your. THIS IS OKAY. There are ways to fix this.
Evaluate: Are you doing the work for your classes and studying, or are you spending all your time on clubs/your part time job/your pet hamster? For every 3 credit hours you take, you need to be spending 9 hours outside of class doing the work, otherwise you are going to be in hell. If you are spending all your time on other things, reevaluate why you’re in college. Do you want to finish your degree? If yes, then put the work in to do so.
Reflect: What is holding you back right now? If it’s your mental health, see if there are on campus counselors that you can talk to? Are you lethargic? Fix your sleep schedule and tire yourself out so you can sleep at a sensible time. Figure out how to study best, and put forth the effort.
Meditate: Are you in the right major? Are you studying something you are passionate about and care about? Are you excited to go to your lectures, and do you find the subject material interesting? If you answered no to any of these questions, you may be majoring in the wrong thing for you. Is there another route to getting to the job field you want? What is it? Do your research and figure it out.
It’s okay to be scared. What isn’t okay is not changing when you know you’re doing poorly. You are probably spending a lot of money on this, and quite honestly, if you’re miserable, you need to evaluate what is going on so that you don’t spend all of college miserable.
I hope this helped. Please message me if you need help.
Best,
M
I'm in my junior in college I've got a 2.8 gpa, no relevant experience for my resume and I don't have a mentor of sorts to give me recommendations. I want to change but I have trouble seeing where I should even start. Where do I start so I can grow the fuck up?
This is such a broad question and I would say the number one thing to do is to take responsibility for your life and just step the fuck up instead of telling people on the internet about your problems.
Here’s an easy 3 step process for what you just told me.
Dedicate yourself to raising that GPA. You’re only a junior and school’s only just begun, so make these last 4 semesters worth something.
Earn some experience. Get an on campus job. Find a volunteer opportunity. Try for an internship. Join a club. Just fucking do something instead of sitting around moaning that you have no experience.
Go talk to your school guidance counsellor. Y’know, the mentor of sorts you supposedly don’t have that’s offered by your school?
Every day may not be good but there is something good in every day.

"You two have managed to accomplish something together no one ever has; you surprised me.”
I’ve been fucking waiting for this photo set right here, and let me tell you why. Monsters University quickly became my favorite movie due to a single fact, that these two? They failed. They actually went to school and they failed, they didn’t get brought back in, they didn’t make a miraculous come back at the end, they fucking failed College.
But that didn’t stop them. Through hard work, perseverance, and taking opportunities that came a long instead of just settling for where they were at, they were able so still make it to where they wanted to be.
That is super powerful, it gives you hope, knowing that college isn’t the only way. Because you know what? It isn’t, you don’t have to go to college to get to where you want to be or to be happy. You just got to take chances, take opportunities, swallow that fear and do things to help change your life for the better. If you believe college is it? Fantastic! Go for it!
However, remember: Life is never over if you fail something. You just got to look for opportunities to bring yourself back up.
Oh, HEY!
I leave for a couple days and there are a lot of you!
Please send requests for what you want tips on by sending an ask!
If you’re in college right now
Check the syllabus for each one of your classes right now while you bullshittin
Don’t fall behind this early in the semester off some bullshit
So what? You failed your finals. You gained some weight. So what? You’re single again. You lost your job. So what? What now? You live. You try again. That’s what.

Looking down on someone for perusing ANY degree is a shame. Trade school is an amazing option that we don’t talk enough about to kids. However, if you are passionate about a specific topic when it comes to liberal arts, then go for it.
I will say though, that any degree is marketable and valuable if you make it so. You have to find a way, but your dream job isn’t always what your degree entails, and your degree may have more or less value depending on how you use it.
John Oliver discusses for-profit institutions. In summary...just don't. If you want to get ahead education wise and don't know where to start, state funded community colleges are great. Do that!

I talk about UFYH a lot but this is their "tomorrow morning" list. I have it printed out and tacked next to my room door!
