By this point, she’s managed to get well over 800 points from solo encounters and helping friends out. She might’ve gotten higher but to save some bystanders, she had to knock back some black calloons, some with harder force than she’s used to. She manages to take a quick break in a now abandoned mini mart, careful to step over the broken glass as she makes her way in. It only makes sense to take respite in here--there’s tons of spilled snacks and unopened drinks nearby, and with everyone running around, she could rest up and head back out. Kairi grabs a water bottle and puts one in her pocket before taking another one to drink from. (Mentally, she promises to come back and pay for these things; once she had the money.) 

As she ventures back outside, she comes across a young man fending off incoming black calloons. Not wanting him to get hurt, Kairi grabs a bag of chips from the ground and chucks it at the calloons, garnering their attention.

“Hey, back off! I’m just about had it with you monsters!!”

║✎║: Instantly she realized how disadvantageous the “game” truly was. Whereas others were equipped with unique powers and weapons, Naminé had–well–her sketchbook and pencils. She was not capable of any extraordinary skills that were blessed to her friends, nor did she even have combat experience to protect herself.

She contemplated on this negativity…as she laid trapped within a box.

The white balloon floated peacefully above her, as though mocking her failed efforts. She had scaled a fire escape ladder, hoping to retrieve it as it drifted high beyond her reach. Unfortunately as her balance was not refined, it was a brief mission that ended with her losing her grip. 

As thankful as the girl was to have fallen among a heap of trash, her body had folded within a cardboard box–Leaving her limbs trapped besides each other within the confined space. The only indication of her presence was her exposed legs.

“What should I do now?” 

Or rather, what would Kairi do?

Kairi undoubtedly rushed out to tackle any white calloons that appeared. It was as though it were training against weaker Heartless and Nobodies that might’ve popped up. These creatures were relatively easy to kill- just one jab of her wooden sword and Kairi already had taken out four cat balloons as she wandered around the ward. She looked for any sign of friends nearby, hoping that they were safe or not in the negatives. 

Eventually, she passed by Namine just moments after she fell into the box and rushed to her side, peering into the box where her friend landed in.

“Namine! Oh no, uh, here, let me help you out!” She pulls her friend out, worry evident in her features, as she looks over her to make sure there weren’t any more injuries. “Are you alright? Were you trying to get a cat balloon too?” 

She looks up to where Namine had fallen from and sees one floating but decides it’s not worth getting Namine hurt again. “I could get it- but it won’t count if you don’t hit one. Don’t worry! We’ll find more if we explore together. So stay by my side, okay? I promise I’ll keep you safe.”

Despite her complaints however, the boy in front of her wouldn’t budge and instead, insisted with a gentle hand tug to follow him. She sleepily latched onto his hand, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes as she did so, unsure what it was she was supposed to be seeing.

When she notices what’s before her, Kairi’s eyes go wide in surprise as she pulls Sora into a quick hug. 

“You actually made me breakfast! This looks amazing, wow thank you!”

“We’re always going to be there for one another. Can’t imagine it any other way.” She echoes his sentiment, knowing just how to settle the mood between them. She wonders what this place will bring, or what sort of memories and experiences they will all create together. For now though, she’s content to think about the here and now- and that she’s once again with Sora. 

“This is a tough nut to crack huh? Well- if you can’t find a way out, then maybe you can show me around then! Give me a nice tour of my new home, hm? Hmmm?” She nudges him with a playful expression on her face.

“I want to see the beach! Let’s go!”

There were so many things Sora wanted to say. He wanted to know how much she knew. And wanted to apologize for the sudden absence. It was too late when Sora realize what was happening. Yet if he ever found out about it sooner, that wouldn’t have stopped him from saving someone important. And he would do it again.

And again.

Though Kairi’s cheerful demeanor allow him to loose that process as she was already being pushy to see what this place had to offer. “Alright, alright. I’ll get to it. there’s so many things around here that it would take months for me to show you around…”

“Hehe, but you should know that I’ve already scouted out the beach. it’s not home, but it’s a good spot to relax. I’ll show you!” Sora’s smile widen just a little more before taking off, not too quickly for Kairi to fall behind, but enough to show her the way. “It won’t be far, I promise! Oh! they also have great spots to get all kinds of treats, like ice cream.” Though he could thank Axel for that part one day. “We should find a time to get everyone together and go to the beach!”

“Well it’s a good thing we’re not going anywhere anytime soon huh?” 

She most likely didn’t know the scope of truth her words contained, but now that she was here, she wasn’t going to leave Sora alone if she could help it. Even though his adventures led him to many different worlds and had him meet all sorts of people, she was glad that just this once, things were almost like before. Kairi wouldn’t change anything, she wouldn’t look back and have any lingering regrets or wishes-

...so would it be okay if, just this once, she could be a little selfish? Even to spend another day with Sora- if that wish could come true, then she’d endure anything. It would be worth it if she could be with him, even for a moment longer. 

He rushes forward, as he always does, and Kairi manages to pull herself out of her thoughts. With the sun setting in the backdrop, the nostalgia of it all comes sweeping across her all at once. It’s just as she remembers; the island, his smile, their promise.

“Ice cream huh? That does sound good actually.” She hums in agreement, catching up to him as they make their way to the beach. “That’d be so much fun. I can’t wait. Riku, you, our friends...it’ll be so great! I know it.”
