For the most part I think Oda's done a good job utilizing the Supernovas, but I am pretty disappointed with how Kidd's story turned out. Oda puts in a lot of legwork this arc setting him up as a foil for Luffy, and it's a sort of narrative promise that doesn't get fulfilled to its ultimate potential. Kidd and Luffy don't interact enough for them to bounce of each other. I could have accepted Kidd getting jobbered as an example of how his brand of hot-headed brute strength doesn't cut it in the political landscape of the New World--kind of like a post time skip Moriah--but that story thread didn't get enough attention to make it feel meaningful, especially compared to how much Law's story completely took over the plot after he skyrocketed in popularity.
It's an example of how Oda making shit up on the spot has its downsides. The Supernovas are Oda planting a bunch of seeds for the future seeing what sprouts up from the mess. It leads to some unexpected surprises like Capone Bege on WCI, but also plot lines that wither on the vine before they can bear any fruit.
I 100% agree that Kid got shafted & basically forgotten, but to be honest I just....don't care. lol. I do not feel like anything was lost like op feels. His disappearance from the story doesn't really stand out as an objective failure to anyone outside his dedicated fan base. At least, not so much that it's a glaring failure of Oda's writing like maybe some other things that happened/not happened in the story.
I'm not trying to say Kid as a character sucks and I know there are a decent amount of fans very attached to him, but if it's a toss up between Law or Kid for focus I'm choosing Law every time. I just do not believe any backstory/plot line Oda could've came up with for Kid would've been able to measure up with what we got out of Law in Dressrosa.
Honestly, if Oda wasn't planning on going full villain with Kid then I can really only see him ending up as One Piece's version of Bakugo from MHA. While I love Bakugo I do think his specific trope is pretty overused in shonen at this point & he is the best modern example we have. So much so I fear anyone else trying to do the same would fall short in comparison. Oda might've thought something similar and decided Law would be more fun to work with & thus Kidd got sent to the background. And franky, I'm glad for it. I think we're living in the best timeline.
