One of the stranger things about training brand new nurses is explaining how to min max small talk. It feels very weird to coach people on how to chat.

So, like, as a patient who has dealt with some supremely shitty nurses -- as in, 'I literally have PTSD from the way I was treated after spinal surgery' -- and some real true and absolute gems, this stuff is incredibly good, and I would like to beam it all into the head of every medical professional, ever.

I'm a chronic pain patient on a standard opioid regimen for over a decade to manage intractable pain, and in situations where I've had acute pain on top of chronic pain, I have been treated like real fucking shit by some really judgemental medical professionals. I'm not gonna lie, the last 2 slides made me borderline cry.

The one thing that I don't think I saw on here which really makes me feel seen -- and thus makes me much more patient and calm, honestly -- is acknowledging when you're seeing a patient do their best to try to be calm and cool and good with a very difficult situation. When I had a really, really bad pain flare that I could not manage at home about six months ago and ended up in the ER, when the nurse pushed pain meds that actually helped and I just sort of... sagged... into the bed, she gave me this look aside and said, "Oh, honey. Did you have your brave face on? Thank you, but be less brave and tell me more."

And like, one time I snapped at a nurse because I was starting to have a panic attack about pain and realizing I hadn't eaten for hours, and when he got me food and meds, I apologized, and he said, "It's okay, you're having a much worse day than I am." Meant the world, even though, like, I didn't need to snap at him, and I was sorry.

Anyway, this is fucking great.

RECOVERY: Hospital Bed | Holding Back Tears | “What have I done?”

Painful recovery. Whumpees bathing for the first time since captivity, and every water droplet falling onto their burn wounds, pulling on their stitches, soaking through bandages. Whumpees having to sit and wait while pieces of glass are slowly extracted from within their skin, holding back tears when the cleansing alcohol gets into their cuts. Whumpees having to drink healing potions that are meant to help in the long run, but hurt like hell going down Whumpee's throat.

Caretaker rushes into Whumpee's room the second they wake up. Just seeing Whumpee brings a whirlwind of fear and concern and anger to the forefront of Caretaker's mind, god, they're so angry that Whumpee made them worry like this and Whumpee could've died and Caretaker would be left in ruins and- Whumpee's heart rate has doubled and they've moved to the edge of the bed. Away from Caretaker.
