I don’t know if this is an obvious take or a hot take, but I think people need to start re-framing feminism as the fight for body autonomy as opposed to whatever this second wave revival gender essentialist bullshit we have going on right now. Once you reframe it in this way, it’s easier to understand intersectionality and why cis women are not the only people who need feminism. The lack of body autonomy effects cis women, trans people, intersex people, disabled people, poc, homeless people, sex workers, etc. and your feminism needs to include and prioritise all of these groups of people (which will include men btw) because feminism is about autonomy, not about establishing a matriarchy. Body autonomy is the biggest threat to the patriarchy, both with reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and even the right to not be drafted into military services. Once body autonomy is established for everyone, the patriarchy no longer has a leg to stand on.

And body autonomy does include things that you don’t personally like either. I was prompted to write this post after a series of bad takes from progressives, but one of them was re-hashing the Sabrina Carpenter album cover drama with “I don’t think it’s conservative of me to think that the album cover is a bad look when we’ve seen images of women being abused in this way” because I do actually think you’ve failed to understand feminism by projecting your morals onto a woman who was consensually expressing her own autonomy just because she expressed it in a way that you didn’t like or that made you uncomfortable.

Body autonomy also means unhealthy choices. Body autonomy also means regret rates. Body autonomy also means freedom of sexuality. Body autonomy also means mutilation. If you believe body autonomy has limitations and exceptions, then your feminism is most likely surface level.

TERFs are some of the biggest opponents to body autonomy, and if you find yourself thinking “oh people can do whatever they want with their bodies as long as it doesn’t harm them or make others uncomfortable” then you are far more susceptible to TERF propaganda than you think.

Feminism is a movement for the empowerment and liberation of women. Body autonomy is obviously going to be a big part of that, but there's a lot of ways in which women are oppressed that don't fall under that umbrella. If a woman is passed over for promotion, in whole or in part, because she's a woman, that's an example of misogyny and oppression of women, but it's not a violation of her body autonomy. Shouldn't this be a major feminist concern?

And also, as an aside, you say that the body autonomy definition will include men as part of the groups, but you don't actually include men in the groups of people who are having their body autonomy violated. The genital mutilation of male infants is both legal and socially acceptable in the U.S and many other countries. I feel like a body autonomy movement that doesn't include that in their concerns is missing a pretty major issue. (Yes, obviously abortion rights is more important, but that would be included in the body autonomy definition of feminism by default.)

There's a thing where people hold different expectations about you because of your gender, and then you notice, and it makes you self-conscious.

For example... The fact that you talk about positive masculinity as being about guys wanting a version of being a good person that's not for girls.

I see this all the time, and... As much as people are against femininity I don't think I've ever seen someone talk about how funny it is that women want a version of good behavior that excludes those icky boys.

Obviously it is fine for boys to have women as role models and for girls to have men as role models. Like, yes, sure, in an ideal world gender wouldn't be a factor in this and people would just emulate those they admire.

But the nature of society complicates this because men and women are in fact treated differently. A girl who models her behavior after men she admires will run into problems because she is not viewed or treated the same as a man. A boy who models his behavior after women will run into similar issues. Hence the desire for gender-specific models of virtue.

The reason to have virtues in the first place is to do good things even when they cause you social problems. You don’t need virtues to tell you to do things that make people like you.

The goal is to raise boys into good men. It's one thing to say "you should be a good person without any expectation of reward". It's another to say "I don't understand why people are hesitant to be good when it's actively socially discouraged for them to behave in those ways." It would help if men weren't considered lesser as men for being emotionally intelligent and considerate of others, actually.

Maybe I don’t get the concept of choosing your role model. To me, role models are something adults choose and then order kids to have. I don’t typically think of “masculinity” as something that’s needed in a role model in order for a boy to choose it, since I don’t imagine a boy choosing in the first place.

I'm sure there are many parents who think of it that way, but unfortunately the kids are definitely picking their own role-models, and ultimately they always will. They might be happy to pick their own parents or maybe a teacher. Sports stars, youtubers maybe. A lot of them will pick Andrew Tate. I think Andrew Tate is a pretty good example of why this is necessary, actually. The patriarchal image of what masculinity looks like can be/has been deconstructed, but that's only half the work. If we, as reasonable and conscientious people, don't reconstruct something for these young men to hold onto, it's going to be up to the grifters and the misogynists to tell them what a man is. And you can say "Why does it matter? Can't those boys be happy with being themselves?" and I might even agree with you. It worked for me. Strategically, though, I don't want to surrender this front to the manosphere. When these young men go asking how they should behave, which they will, I want there to be better options for them. I don't really understand why people get so upset at the idea.

Because it’s “separate but equal.” There need to be men who have emotions for the same reason there need to be women who have jobs other than homemaker, but positioning women who work outside the home as a new type of femininity would still reinforce the idea of femininity as something no woman can escape.

I figured out what this all reminds me of. Religion. Religious folks say their denomination is open-minded and flexible and lets you question. Then you question whether the religion is even true in the first place, and you discover the cage still exists even if the walls are farther away.

It's about internal narratives. You have some trait. That trait is important to you. You develop, based on cultural exposure and osmosis, some narrative about having that trait. You feel you are not living up to the narrative, so you become insecure about trait. So you look for information on how to be better at trait.

Sometimes it's being a boy, sometimes it's being a girl. Sometimes it's being black, sometimes it's being gay, sometimes it's about being an artist or author, etc, etc.

So you need a narrative that describes how to be a worthy example of that specific trait. You can't just have a single general narrative, unless the only trait that people will ever feel insecure about is 'personhood'.

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!
