After 20 Years, Netflix May Finally Make Avatar's Most Divisive Zuko Story Happen – That Even His OG Actor Wanted

This Zuko storyline could happen in the Netflix show.

I'll admit I liked the Zutara tension from the animated series, but I'm not sure I see it working for the live action. I'm not sure Kiawentiio has the same intensity as Mae Whitman, but maybe season one just didn't give her much to chew on. The actors aging a bit will likely help this along too. We shall see...

do you think that a wand that was custom made for a wizard would work just as well as one that would "choose" them?

good question! well we know that fleur’s wand was custom made to include the hair of her grandmother and that seems to be working out well for her, triwizard champion and all that. although there’s a chance that’s due to her personal connection with the core of her wand. actually, now that I think about it, it could just be coincidence and that was the wand that happened to choose fleur!

wand lore is never explained very clearly in the books so really this is a question only jkr can answer. my instinct is to say yes but there’s really very little evidence to back that up, just my hunch. what does everybody else think?

Via the Pottermore readings, Ollivander makes it pretty clear that "the wand chooses the wizard" was HIS conclusion for the best wand matching, according to his research and experience. Fleur and other such examples got their wands from different makers. It seems to me that custom wands can still work well but I'm betting it'd tricky and not always guaranteed to work. Ollivander acknowledges that custom orders containing cores from beloved magical pets was pretty common practice prior to his discoveries.

Game Grumps Live: Salt Lake City (Review)

My siblings and I got the extraordinary opportunity to see Game Grumps Live! In Salt Lake City on July 15, 2017, at Rockwell @The Complex. We had general admission seating. Here are my thoughts and recommendations!

(Note: This post contains pics but they are bad pics. My apologies. My phone’s focus could not keep up with the frenzy.)

Show Rundown:

They started off with Vernon coming on-stage and greeting the crowd....

...and picking an audience member who is “So good at Super Mario Bros. they could play it with their eyes closed” to...play it with their eyes closed.

(Vernon placing a Sonic hat over the lucky participant’s eyes so he can’t see.)

He then asked the crowd to shout instructions (Mainly “JUMP!”) at the participant at the right times. This made for 10 minutes of amusing intro to hype us up. BUT THEN...VERNON LED US IN THE “HEY I’M GRUMP” INTRO...AND THEN THERE WAS A DEAFENING ROAR…

(The blur here is a perfect representation of the chaos that ensued) ...Arin and Dan EXPLODED ONTO THE STAGE AND THERE WAS NO MERCY FROM THE CROWD.

(Seriously though it’s hard to get good pics when you’re short and the crowd has no chill.) The Game Grumps were on the scene and gave us a hearty hello!

(*Hushed screaming* THERRRE THEY ARRRRRREEEE) The bulk part of the show was an interactive Mario Party 10 game. Arin picked Peach (of course) and Dan picked Yoshi. They then split the crowd into two and had the crowd pick players 3 and 4. 3 picked Waluigi, and 4 (my team) picked Toad.

They had hype chants all prepared for us (“WA-LU-I-GI” *THREE CLAPS* and “GO TOAD”) and told us to hype and cheer as much as possible. They played the game and at each mini game they brought up audience members to play for their respective teams, each time asking their names and asking them for silly hype phrases (Like “What’s your favorite pasta?”) or insults to the other team. There was also dabbing and occasional shenanigans from Dan and Arin. (One of my favorite moments was Dan doing some ridiculous dance/posing at the crowd. Arin asked “What the f*** are you doing, Dan?” and Dan responded with “I”m appealing to the crowd! For Star Points!” XD <3 )

At the conclusion of the game, TEAM TOAD WON!! GO TOAD!!!!! *Deafening roar*

Afterwards they opened it up for questions for about 20 min. (The game went kind of long.) Then they had to bid us goodbye!! Sad!! :(

Thoughts:

I was SUPER hyped to see these guys. Like, really really hyped. It’s still surreal to me that I saw them in person, but at the same time, it’s like “OMG I know these guys.” Mostly, I’m just really glad I got to see them.

The show was fun, but halfway through I realized something: I wasn’t laughing.

Sure, I was cheering and screaming along with everyone else, but I didn’t feel like I was witnessing a live episode of Game Grumps like I had expected. It felt more like a sporting event than a comedy show. It was only really fun if you were one of the people picked to go on stage with the Grumps. Once I realized this I was really disappointed that this was all I had come to see, and hoped in vain that they would play another game afterward. This is more disappointing when you consider how these guys really are very talented performers and improv artists. I paid to go see them and I didn’t get much of that at all. Mostly people just trying to soak in their 3 minutes of fame. (Which admittedly I’d have done too.) I’ve heard that they’ve played Mario Maker at other shows and I really wish they’d have done that instead. I would recommend that if you are ho-hum about going to see them live that you definitely keep this in consideration. (Also, bring earplugs to protect your hearing.)

The Q&A was actually a bit more enjoyable in some aspects, even though I didn’t get a chance to ask a question. I was surprised that the questions asked were pretty quality. (They said at the start, No “Can I get a selfie/hug?” questions, and only one person asked a “Monkey” question, like “Can you say/do X.”) I’ll go over notable questions in a later section. I don’t regret going to see them, but I’m still disappointed I didn’t get exactly what I thought I paid for. (And drove 6 hours and paid for a hotel for.) If you’re a huge fan though, I probably don’t have to tell you that it’s worth it anyway. :)

The Venue:

I will be issuing a complaint with The Complex. We stood in line in 100+ degree weather for over an hour (on top of the hours we’d already spent wandering the outdoor mall) with the comfort that we would soon be in an air conditioned building...except it wasn’t. I had confirmed with The Complex ahead of time that seats would definitely be put out, but I had not at all expected or thought to ask about the air conditioning. It shouldn’t be unreasonable to expect an event venue to be able to cool their crowd, right? I’m not sure if it’s the unexpectedly hot temperatures, the fact that the smoke patio door was open the whole time, or a crowd larger than expected, but it it was sweltering in there and I found myself using my hand fan the entire time, and it wasn’t much help. I do not find this acceptable and I would not consider going to an event there again for this reason. (At least not in the summer, jeez.)

BONUS: Notable Questions and Answers!

Will we ever have an episode of “Dad Grumps”? After a roaring audience chant of “A-VI, A-VI”, Dan said Avi (his dad) has been warming up a little more to the idea of being on the show in some capacity. He doesn’t want to be on camera but he *may* consider doing a podcast interview similar to the interview Dan did with his grandma.

Are the Grumps ever going to finish “A Link Between Worlds?”

They are apparently waiting on a custom controller being built for Dan’s enormous thumbs. They are hoping this will happen, though.

Will there ever be a three-way Game Grumps episode featuring Jontron?

There was a loud roar at this question, mostly “YEEEAH!” BUT there were definitely some audible “Boos.” They have considered it in the past but after...recent events…(Google it if you don’t know)...it’s leaning toward a strong “No.” I got the impression that this wasn’t an outright “No,” but my guess is it’s going to be hard to see how Jon’s reputation erodes or blows over in the next few years.

Has Arin taught Dan how to draw yet? This is a reference to “Super Mario Galaxy: Part 69″ where Dan mentioned how he couldn’t draw and Arin mentioned how he could possibly teach him. They said this has not happened as of yet. The crowd then proceeded to chant “DOODLE DUDES,” and Arin, surprised, said that having Dan on an episode of Doodle Doods could possibly happen, and if it does, we have Salt Lake to thank for it. :)

Starting Sailor Moon Season 2

I realized I’d been posting this stuff on Facebook, when I totally could be posting it here to Tumblr too. To fill you in, a few months ago I started a routine where I work out while watching Sailor Moon. (It’s had some hiatuses) This has been great for me because: A) I actually get myself to work out almost every day, and B) I have yet to marathon all of the original Sailor Moon 90′s anime and it’s about time I did that, since access is so readily available now. I’m doing the new Viz dub, and using a guide ( http://anitay.kinja.com/a-filler-reduced-viewing-guide-to-sailor-moon-season-2-1736795073 ) to skip most filler. Finished the Makai Tree arc the other day. Glad I took the time to watch a few episodes from it, since I do really like the dynamic between Ale, Ann, Mamoru, and Usagi. I don't think the arc is as bad as people make it out to be, (It has some golden episodes sprinkled throughout and some of the funniest moments) though from a plot standpoint it IS totally skippable. And the finale has some great action! Today I started the Black Moon Kingdom arc...BRING ON THE EVIL ANTICS OF SAILOR MOON'S TRUE ARCH NEMESIS...CHIBI-USA. Seriously though as much as I hate the character she was actually pretty funny in this first epsiode. (I mean, anyone who holds a gun to Usagi's head and threatens to shoot her in cold blood is good by me, right? XD Note: Context is important for this scene if you are confused.) I'm reallllly looking forward to the villains in this arc since I've heard so much about them. (I've read the manga but the manga is just so much more brief with character screen time.) To the moon and beyond!

Moody Memory

It has been bothering me a lot lately how my memory doesn’t seem to be as good as it used to be, or at least not as good as I’d like it to be.

This realization was first brought to my attention when a friend was trying to  reminisce with me about one Halloween when we went Trick-or-Treating. We’d gone Trick-or-Treating many times, but as hard as I tried, I couldn’t remember the specific event she spoke of.

Me: “...I don’t remember this. Are you sure I was there?”

Friend: “Duh, of course you were! It was a lot of fun! Don’t you remember?”

Me: “Are you sure this didn’t happen during the year I was in Phoenix?”

Fr: “Yeah.”

Me: “When did this happen?”

Fr: “A few years ago.”

Me: “Like how long ago? During high school? Before or after I came back from Phoenix?”

Fr: “Uhh not really sure. But you were there.”

Me: “Are you sure it wasn’t my sister?”

Fr: “I’m pretty sure she was there too.”

Me: “What costume was I wearing? I’d remember it if I knew what costume I was wearing.”

Fr: “I don’t remember. That’s not as important anyway.”

Me: “...Then I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

(Paraphrasing of the conversation we had.)

My friend was really miffed, and I was really upset about it. Why couldn’t I remember? Was she messing with me? Was she the one remembering it incorrectly? I still haven’t found the answers to these questions and it still really bothers me.

Since then I’ve had similar conversations with others, and came to the conclusion that my memories must be tied to strong emotions about the event. I looked back and realized that in the past 10 years, (my adult life since high school) there really isn’t a whole lot I remember.

I did some research on it, and here’s what I found:

Remembering is easier when your mood matches the mood you were in when experiencing/learning the information

The stronger the emotions aroused, the greater the effect on memory

Emotions can be evoked, or minimized, by displaying or suppressing expressions of emotion

Different emotional states may impair or help memory, for different memory tasks

Source: http://www.memory-key.com/memory/emotion This seems to be consistent with my experiences. Plus, it is also mentioned that depression and anxiety can have an effect on emotion. Well, if this is true, then it explains a lot about the past 10 years. I was 18 when I was diagnosed with and began treatment for depression. Now, at 28, I currently take medication that specifically addresses anxiety. Mental illness, particularly depression, is known for dampening or dulling your mood, to the point where you don’t particularly feel much of anything. It makes sense that in a period of my life where I don’t feel as much, I don’t remember as much. This doesn’t necessarily make me feel any better about it but at least I have an explanation. It terrifies me how little I am remembering. Memories are the only thing I can take with me everywhere and the only thing really worth making. I want to make good ones and I want to keep them. It terrifies me even more that most of what I seem to be remembering is negative. When I took the Pottermore Patronus quiz, I had a terrible time thinking of a suitable good memory to summon. I wasn’t satisfied with my result and I want to take it again. (As an obsessed Harry Potter fan, this is arbitrarily important.) It made me realize that something is wrong.

I can only hope that I am getting better with treatment. ...I think I need to watch Inside Out again.

Is BotW Zelda anybody else's new favorite Zelda? (The character)

She just speaks to me on so many levels. Gosh I just adore her. <3

To elaborate:

Firstly, she is the first to be outright, a nerd. Her mind works faster than she has time to do anything about and she spends hours obsessing over the things that interest her, even to the point of ignoring some of the things she should be doing. Her eccentricity is entertaining and loveable.

Secondly, her spiritual journey. Obviously the spirituality in Zelda games is very different from Mormonism or even most Christianity, but I still found it very relateable and inspirational. Spending hours devoted to spiritual study, ceremonies, and prayer only to come up short on the spiritual revelation you know you deserve and need, until one day, it just clicks. Though quite different, I’ve still been through, and am still going through, something similar. Seeing Zelda dress in all white and struggling to get inspired was comforting to me at a time when I was preparing for a major spiritual landmark. (My endowments, to my Mormon friends who know what I mean.)

Thirdly, she is the most complex and developed Zelda we’ve had so far. Skyward Sword Zelda is a close second but this Zelda was shown going through way more struggles, frustration, and showing emotional weakness, self-doubt, and vulnerability. I’ve heard she’s gotten a lot of guff from some fans for treating Link poorly in some of the cut scenes, but those scenes happen before she’s really warmed up to Link and her behavior is based solely on her own self-doubt. We see her at her best and worst; bright and happy, scared and downtrodden, angry and frustrated, and confident and bold. Seeing her go through that range and grow as a person was truly a delight.

TL;DR: BotW Zelda is awesome and the best and if you disagree, FIGHT ME. XD

Anime 2-Episode Challenge: Durararara!!

Why It’s On Our List: We have a friend that really, really likes this one and the style seemed kind of fun.

Overall: Doing a short review here because frankly, we didn’t like this one. Themes of suicide are very uncomfortable for us, and it wasn’t really solved in a way that was exactly pleasant. Sure, the girl lived, and Izaya’s very strange pep was -almost- responsible for her salvation. (But she was saved by soemone else) But ultimately, he seemed like a grade A ass who just likes to toy with people. (Like seriously wtf man.) This one is a nope. Will Continue Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ (1 out of 5 stars) Unless the rest of the series is somehow all unicorns and rainbows, this one’s off our list for good.

Anime 2-episode Challenge: Your Lie in April

Why It’s On Our List: I heard about this one when it came out, and I keep meaning to check out more music anime. Classical music is BAE. <3 Also, I enjoyed the first season of Sound!Euphonium. Animation: Oh my gaaaaaaawd this anime is gorgeous! Especially when the piano keys are animated. AND DAT REFLECTION ON THE POLISHED WOOD MMMMMMGH. <3 Character-design-wise, however, I’m not super fond of it. None of the characters have very interesting designs, which is alright considering this anime is supposed to be a more realistic slice of life than an outrageous shounen, but I suppose I’m not a fan of the messy-hair style. (This makes no sense for me, come to think of it. I don’t actually know what it is that bothers me about it.) Also, I’m getting a bit tired of “when we see the glasses character from the side, we remove the bar of his glasses so you can see his eye.” It wouldn’t have been a problem if they had only done it once or twice, but they use profiles for this character ALL THE TIME so it really draws attention to it. Story: Overall we find the romance so far to be pretty uninteresting, and it sounds like there will be a cringey love-triangle to boot. We’re not really very interested in where it’s going. However, a lot of the musical themes really strike a chord with me. (Pun intended) I can relate to someone who used to have a real passion for music, but circumstances made it not enjoyable anymore. (However Kousei’s case involves an abusive mother, which is very different from mine.) But I can relate to being pulled back to a hobby that was once so important to you, once made you really feel like someone special, even though you have many good reasons why you left it. If anything keeps me going in this series, it’s going to be the themes of reigniting an old passion. Characters: Kaori turned out to be a lot different from how we were expecting her to be from clips we’d seen, and because of the 180 in our expectations, we ended up not liking her very much. She’s loud and bossy, but we can also understand that side to her that is passionate and draws Kousei in. In fact, the scene in episode two where she takes her own spin on Beethoven is my favorite, and reminds me a lot of Lindsey Stirling and her journey with going from classical violinist to someone who makes it her own. (My reference here is to her memoir, “The Only Pirate at the Party.” Actually, can we just have an anime about Lindsey Stirling?) I look forward to seeing more of this, because SCREW THE ESTABLISHMENT! MUSIC IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!!! RRRRGH!! XD Kousei so far is my favorite character, though. He’s very relateable and very real. I spoke about him more in the story overview but basically, I can relate to a kid trying to find his calling in his passions. Tsubaki: Can’t say I like her too much. She’s funny enough but makes a lot of decisions I could never get behind in real life. And anyone who is unapologetic about hitting a baseball to someone’s face, no matter how much they know the person, has an automatic F in my book. Ryota: Found him a bit funnier in how good he is at giving advice but how bad he is at following it. Seems like a jerk for how much he seems to be messing around with girls, but I’d really have to see more of him before I pass judgement. Music: The point of the show is music. For Vicky, she is reminded a lot of the classical music side plot from Madoka Magica. She feels like she already saw the same thing in Madoka Magica, so it’s kind of samey. Otherwise, she doesn’t feel she has much to say on it. For myself, I was amazed that I actually COULD tell the difference between Kaori’s performance and the rest. I don’t know who they get to perform the classical music in anime, but dang, it’s so good. <3 Other than when characters perform, I don’t recall hearing much in the rest of the soundtrack. The opening an ending themes are fine, though the animation sticks out way more in the OP than the music does. Voice Acting: (We will be doing dub for most if not all of the anime we watch for this challenge.) This is a Bang Zoom! dub so overall we don’t expect the quality we usually get out of FUNimation. The main four characters are all unknowns to us and they didn’t stick out particularly well to us either. The best match and acting I would say so far is Max Mittelman as Kousei. His performance was chill and relaxed with anxiety when necessary. Erica Lindbeck’s Kaori was, frankly, a bit annoying, but this may just be the character. I also can’t tell much different between her voice and Tsubaki’s. Other: I do wish this show had gone a bit more serious and ditched the outrageous anime faces moments, especially when it’s “EEEEW YOU PEVERT YOU TOOK A PANTY SHOT EVEN THOUGH YOU ACTUALLY DIDN’T.” Didn’t necessarily ruin it for me but it was a bit annoying. Will Continue Rating: ***00 (3 out of 5 stars) Not super interested at this time. Pretty meh on it, but may still continue it in the future.

Summer Anime 2-episode Challenge!

So my sis ( @vickyvioletdraws ) and I want to sample a bunch of anime over the summer. This will consist of watching the first two episodes of an anime for each session that we do this. We find that 2 episodes is usually enough for us to see the setup and where an anime is going…and then we will later decide which animes we would like to continue. Our list so far consists of: All Out! Assassination Classroom Death Parade Durarara!! Erased FREE! Swim Club Haikyuu Himouto! Umaru-chan Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure K (Project) Kemono Friends Kill la Kill Natsume’s Book of Friends Non Non Biyori One-Punch Man Oremonogatori Panty & Stocking Seven Deadly Sins Silver Spoon Snow White with the Red Hair Sword Art Online Tiger & Bunny Toradora Your Lie in April We will be doing these in no particular order, and we may still continue to add to them. You may suggest though be aware I can experience extreme anxiety from stuff that is really violent and gorey. (Some of these may have to be removed after I get more information about them.) I also prefer to stay away from mature content in the sex area, but so long as it doesn’t get any worse than say, Rick and Morty, it’s fine.

Since my recent severe episode with anxiety and depression, I am beginning to understand why someone would have a Dementor as a Boggart. The idea of reliving my nightmares, complete with all the what-if scenarios, tremors, and the empty feeling that nothing has any meaning, terrifies me more than anything now.

Anyone else REALLY hate the sprite design for male Veteran Trainers in Sun & Moon?

The previous designs looked like older, mysterious, and maybe a bit scruffy war-torn men, but the Sun & Moon one looks like the guy that sits in the bar at casinoes and makes sexist comments to all the waitresses there.

Alright, Tumblr, please don’t let me down here. Can we just all agree that sexual harrassment, no matter the sex of the agressor or victim, is not okay? I am a female. Last night at a Halloween costume party I complained of my feet hurting in my boots. The female total stranger next to me said I probably should just take them off. As I leaned over to do so, she deemed it necessary to smack me extremely hard on the rear end. At my shocked expression, she said “Sorry, it was there.” in a tone that denoted she was only apologizing out of politeness, not necessarily out of remorse. I told her in a firm voice, “THAT IS NOT OKAY.” and walked off, leaving the game I had been participating in. No one seemed to notice this had happened or seemed to really care if they HAD noticed. I contacted my friend who ran the party afterward and told her what had happened. She was apologetic, but said things like “we tend to be looser around each other” and “she doesn’t have boundaries.”  Excuse me, but no. Had this woman been male, I highly doubt she would have gotten such a “boys will be boys” attitude about the whole affair. Surely someone would have noticed and they’d be kicked out of the party. Or another guy would have clocked him over the head instantly. Or at the very least, someone would have demanded he apologize to me, sincerely, on the spot. Or something? Why is this sexual harrassment suddenly overlooked when it’s female to another female? What the ever-loving-crap?! I understand that some people are just like that to their friends. Heck, I’m that way with some of mine. But you absolutely do not treat a stranger this way, at least not without their consent. How do you honestly expect them to react, anyway? Be into it? Go “oh you naughty person.”? Get real. It was demeaning, it was crushing, and it stun for quite a few minues afterward. And the best I can do is whine about it on Tumblr.

I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT FANDOM QUESTION. Have you all coined a term that collectively embodies the friggin’ sweet cartoons we have nowadays? I’m talking the Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall sort of crowd. I feel like there needs to be a word for this.
