Soo, uhhh…. Unfortunately, it seems my post a couple weeks back about not having cancer was a bit premature…

I made that post after seeing a dermatologist about the fucked up wound on my back. He seemed pretty taken aback by how gnarly it looked, but stated pretty confidently that it wasn't cancer. He then referred me to a wound specialist to find out what it was.

I meet with the wound specialist and he does not offer a single thought or opinion on why it Looks Like That. Barely a reaction at all. He mentions that cancer is a big concern with wounds that don't heal, though non-healing wounds are also fairly typical with my condition, so… He did schedule a biopsy, which is all I really I needed out of the appointment, but I still felt a little lost about what to think.

I had the biopsy done six days ago, and they said it would take about two-four weeks to get the results. Yesterday, about an hour after I wake up, I'm surprised to get a call from the wound specialist's office already. It was the secretary, not the doctor, so I was expecting I'd be scheduling another appointment to discuss the results. Instead she basically hits me with, "About the results of your biopsy, you have skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma. We're forwarding your info to the cancer center and they'll be in touch, okay bye!" (okay that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not by a lot)

So yeah… That's how I found out I have skin cancer. I don't know exactly how bad it is yet. Need more tests for that. Looking it up, basal cell carcinomas are the most common but least deadly type of cancer, which is a good sign at least. Still, skin cancer being the leading cause of death for folks like me is pretty scary.

Mom says I've beaten the all the odds before, and I'm going to keep doing it. Fingers crossed.

Just got back from a meeting with a doctor at the cancer center, after having a CT scan done, and things are looking fairly positive.

Starting with the "bad" part, which is that it's actually a squamous cell carcinoma, not basal, which is slightly worse, but it doesn't seem to change much for me beyond being kinda infuriating at the shit treatment from that particular clinic. Thankfully, we shouldn't have to deal with that place anymore, and the surgeon I met with today was great.

Onto the real news, the CT scan showed no other problems, so it's just the one spot. It's considered "well differentiated" from normal skin, so it's easy to tell which is cancer and which isn't. We won't know how deep it is until the surgeon gets in there, but she was poking at it and it was moving around a lot so she figures it's not that deep.

From here, looks like all we gotta do is just cut it out. Won't even need to be put to sleep or anything, just freeze the area and cut, which is great. I hate having to go under anesthesia. There is still the possibility that they can't get it all out, which would require further treatments, but I've got my fingers crossed that won't be necessary.

Really, the doctor's biggest concern was the hole it'd leave behind. Since my skin is so fragile they can't close it up like they usually do, and a skin graft would just shift the problem somewhere else. But, mom and I are pretty good at dealing with wounds at this point, so we're not too concerned about that.

Fingers crossed we get the appointment booked soon, and it all goes smoothly!
