This marks the approximate spot where the Seodaemun (Great West Gate) used to stand in Seoul’s city wall, until it was knocked down around a hundred years ago during the Japanese occupation, to widen the road.
I walked past this spot many, many times, over at least two years, before figuring out why they had this funny looking wall thing here. Even though it says right on it what it commemorates. My only excuse is that it uses the formal name for the gate (Doneuimun) rather than the Seodaemum name that I knew. And I thought the dates were a telephone number. ㅋㅋ
