Week 2 - Sissy Bowser by Aldo Figueroa

Everyone has a backstory. Being a father, I see children as pure loving beings that, as they grow, are formed by their surroundings, their interactions, their environment. Some grow with positive upbringings, some with negative. For the second Illustration Weekly, when I came across the word “sissy,” I thought about gender roles and how often times boys are forced to “man up,” to lose their emotions, to not feel, but to do. How do everyday encounters form a young person’s life? What can I do to instill positive experiences and words and actions of encouragement to raised emotionally balanced, loving kids?

Here we find young Bowser and his dad (at least my interpretation of him), continuing the cycle of spreading hate. As I raise my kids, I take a moment and think: do I want to raise my kids the same way my parents raised me? Don’t get me wrong, I love my parents and understand they did the best they could. I love them for it. But being able to look back at my upbringing, what do I remember that worked that I would like to continue. What didn’t go so well that I want to change. For example, I probably watched too much TV and programming that was not age appropriate. But on the other hand, my parents showed me the value of hard work by having to do chores around the house (I sometimes miss doing yard work). Not to get in a discussion on the history of the Mushroom Kingdom/Mario fandom, perhaps Bowser could have been a fun loving guy if he was raised with love, not fear.

I saw you said you had a "poor a experience with both yiynova MSP19U and the DP10U". I'm considering them as a wacom alternative. Could you tells us the details of your experience? :)

Yup, that I did. I really wanted to like both the DP10U and the MSP19U. Price wise, they're a bargain! $370 and $600, respectively! I made some youtube videos showing why I didn't keep them. They can be found below at:

With both, I experienced very bad jitter when drawing diagonally at slow to moderate speeds. For me, moderate is a normal drawing speed and not a faster sketch/gesture drawing speed. Also, since I use Mac OS X, at the time, the software driver was super basic. The main thing missing was calibration. On the PC side, you could get up to 21 (if I remember correctly) points of calibration, but on Mac there was zero. Nada. Take it as it is. Both tablets the display cursor and where the stylus touched the tablet was offset about one centimeter to the left and 1/2 centimeter up. To Yiynova's credit, they have updated the driver though I'm not sure if they added calibration on the mac side.

Again, I really wanted to like these tablets, especially after hearing rave reviews from others. I got use to the glass screen. I was liking the stylus response. The viewing angles on both were terrible and the colors would easily shift. Also, there was a big gap from surface of tablet to where your cursor is at. Ultimately I felt that if I kept them, I was compromising. Settling for OK, instead of getting something that made me happy.

I ended up getting a Wacom 13HD and am really happy with it. It's more expensive, but it's what I wanted the Yiynova's to be. I do hope that Yiynova continues to advance their products and works out these issues.
