Fanfic has never been, and will never be inferior to published works, and writing one does not discredit or devalue the quality of your work when writing another.

If you can't watch though, TLDR: one of the major reasons is because freight trains own majority of the American Rails and they don't want to share with passenger trains that are "less profitable".
