“The Embarkation for Cythera” - Jean-Antoine Watteau (1718-1719)

Also known as “Voyage to Cythera” and “Pilgrimage to the lsle of Cythera”. The painting is now in the Louvre in Paris. 

The painting portrays a “fête galante” (an amorous celebration or party) enjoyed by the aristocracy of France during the Réfence after the death of Louis XIV, which is generally seen as a period of dissipation, pleasure and peace, after the sombre last years of the previous regin.

The Rainbow - William Trost Richards (1890)

William Trost Richards was known for painting photographic paintings, he also painted almost exclusively marine watercolors (aquarelle in french).

Swan Reflecting Elephants - Salvador Dalí (1937)

Is a painting from Dalí’s Paranoiac-critical period. The Paranoiac-critical period is a surrealist technique developed by Salvador Dalí in the early 1930s. The technique was used in many of his paintings, especially those that involved optical illusions and other multiple images. The technique was about the paranoia of being manipulated, targeted or controlled by others.

"The Dance Class" - Edgar Degas (1874) Degas was a Impressionist, although he preferred to be called a realist. He was a extremely good at capturing movement. His main goal was becoming a history painter that painted contemporary subject matters.

“Girl with a Pearl Earring” - Johannes Vermeer (1665)

Painted during the baroque epoch during the 1600′s. In the beginning he found his inspiration trough Caravaggio’s religious paintings. Later on this masterpiece was created. Something about the focal point of the painting tells me that it’s the way the girls eyes interacts with the persons who are viewing the painting.

“Fishermen at sea” - Joseph Mallord William Turner (1796)

Mostly famous for his romantic landscape paintings that many people consider the foundation of the impressionists styles later on. 

In the beginning Turner was an assistant for an architect. After turning 14 years old he decided that he wanted to become an artist, and with his studies in Royal Academy of Arts he later became a very great artist and delivered this beautiful creation.

“Masterpiece” - Roy Lichtenstein (1962)

A pop artist that uses his own classical way of painting Ben-Day dots and speech balloons. This painting is known for its narrative content that forebodes Liechtenstein’s fame that was yet to come. The name Brad sounded according to Liechtenstein heroic and that was what he was aiming for: Heroic themes.

“La promenade” - Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1870)

A impressionist painting influenced by the rococo revival style.  

This painting reminds me of “Bazille and Camille” (1865), a painting of a couple together in the forest, painted by Claude Monet. Renoir might have gotten inspired by Monet when they painted together in 1869.  The forest later became a popular landscape for nineteenth-century French painters.

“Starry Night” - Vincent van Gogh (1889)

Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter. This artwork was inspired by Van Gogh’s view from the window of his mental asylum, to which he admitted himself after cutting off his own ear following a mental breakdown. The painting was created from Van Gogh’s memory on the day following the starry night.

“The Ambassadors” - Hans Holbein (1533) Holbein was a painter during the period of renaissance and this painting was one of many portraits that he created.

    I find this painting interesting because of the deeper thoughts of the portrait. In this particular time it was important to show your fortune and by that tell the world that you are successful. This reminds me of the society today, how we show off every single thing on social media like Instagram and Facebook. In the background you can see many different items that has it’s own meaning. For example the cranium describes that we are all deadly.
