flower language has always been an intense source of disappointment for me

like, they all mean really generic things like “love” or “forever” or “i’m sorry” 

i thought you could combine flowers

like you could just send someone a bouquet and from the combination of hibiscus and posies and tulips they’d understand “the rebel leader is dead, rendezvous at the docks at 8, bring the dog, you will need lighter fluid and a large tomato”

I really hope no one’s answered this for you yet, I saw this and got so excited that my obscure knowledge base might come into use.  I had to stretch a few flowers so to speak but Victorian flower language allows for alteration in meaning depending on colour, fruit, flower, bud, steam, leaves and thorns, so I didn’t feel I was too far out of line.  This message would work best as two bouquets bound together.  First red Nasturtium with no leaves (red denotes a leader, the nasturtium a patriot) mixed with white or red Mask Flowers (rebellion, red if you want to emphasize fighting, white martyrdom) around Cypress (death).  Then Chick weed (rendezvous) and Blue Convolvulus (night) surrounded by eight White Popular Leaves (symbolises the time: eight), Yellow Iris (flame, and a flower that grows by rivers) and Yellow Prarie Dock Flowers (this was closest I could find to docks)and one large Tomato Leaf, all bound in Dogwood Bark.  Dogwood represents deceit, but as far as I could find the bark wasn’t used symbolically, and as you referred to the dog instead of a dog, I thought it was likely the pun should be a dead giveaway.  

So there’s your rebel message!

Alden couldn’t help but chuckle, he kept his arm behind her ready for her to fall. It’d been a long time since he’d spent time with anyone drunk. A century or two perhaps. “Please, sit down. Let me send the maids for some food.” he wasn’t ashamed of having maids, but mentally laughed at the idea of sending the food to get food. “What do you wish for?”

Alice sat down on a nearby couch, feeling like she should probably have better posture in the nice home, especially at the mention of maids, but her body just couldn’t be bothered at the moment. She shook her head. “No, no you don’t have to. I’ll be fine with just some water, really. I just gotta hydrate,” but her words were a little slurred. “I don’t want to make more work for your maids.”

Emily looked at her, her blue eyes watching the girl’s every action. She was so human and she could’t help but wonder if Elliot had been like her as a human. “Flowers are beautiful, magical and stunning…now matter what world they are on.” She let slip, her eyes scanning the girl for signs of realisation.

Alice blinked at her a moment, before looking down at the ground, sighing. She really couldn’t keep avoiding the obvious with her. “So, I think we’re dancing around a few subjects here, aren’t we?” She looked up, raising her eyebrows.

“I grew up with him. We’re not from around here. That’s all. It’s just...funny, how we found each other again.”

“No you shouldn’t. Really this is a peaceful town.” Or at least it had been. Things were starting to change though. “You probably think I’m crazy. I really not. I’m telling you the truth.”

“I guess I’ll take your word on it.” She pressed her lips into an apologetic smile. “I mean, I don’t think you’re crazy, but I also am having a little bit of trouble believing all of this.”

“That could totally happen. Though I can’t imagine what would bring them here. It’s not like White Ash is a place that hipsters would be super into…”

“That’s what I don’t trust about hipsters. When you think no one like them should be there, they come and make it a place where they should be a literally no one else should. You can’t trust them.” She giggled.

“Then I’m sorry if I offend you, Alice. Not my intention at all. Feel free to slap me,” she said with a slight smirk. “Exactly. If I believe I can do it. Who says I can’t?” he laughed with her. “Cheers. To meeting strangers in bars,” he smiled.

Alice nodded. “Don’t worry about it too much. I don’t have too much of a problem hearing it, I just won’t say it myself. But I’ll let you know if you get out of control, and not even with a slap.” She laughed, shaking her head, knowing a few people would say he couldn’t, but she might as well not rain on his parade. “To meeting strangers in bars,” she echoed, taking a drink.

As she stumbled, Elliot almost went to help her, but quickly pulled his hand back. “I uh… guess not. You were what… seventeen… the last time I saw you,” he said with a sadness to his voice. “No… that’s not so weird… just different.” He walked into the living room. “Um… make yourself at home. Do you need anything?”

Alice followed him, doing her best to step as carefully as possible so she wouldn’t stumble again. “Is it a good different or a bad different?” She made her way over to a chair, dropping into it, glad to be off of her feet. She frowned, mad at herself for bringing up the fact of just how long they had been apart. “Maybe just some water.” She rubbed her temple, shaking her head.

“And maybe so, but you have him now. Don’t throw that away.” she sighed, the girl was so human. “Darling, you’ll be grateful in the long run. You mortals are so blind, kept in the dark. You have a chance to see parts of the word you never did before. And you have your brother back.”

Alice sighed, her lips quirking up in a bit of a smile. “I’m not really all that interested in seeing these new, secret parts of the world. I felt like I had enough to deal with with the world as I knew it. But I guess I’ll deal with everything extra for the sake of having my brother back.”

“That’s true.” She mused. “And it does mean his apartment will be beautifully camp for the rest of his life.” She said, the imagery selling her on it. 

“Thanks for checking. I’ll take enough to tie bows on the ends of sticks and make magic wands for them.” She said, smiling. “They can bippity boppity annoy their father with them.” She said, content with her decision.

“The glitter will probably outlast the cactus. It’s a perfect reminder of how thoughtful you are and for him to remember to be a good brother.” She laughed nodding as she cut the rest of the ribbon.

“I think this much should work.” She slid the two smaller pieces towards Cara. “That’s what you need to do. Arm them with something that annoys him, and not you.” She started to type into the register.

He nodded and put the bags on the counter. “No honestly I’m fine.” he said with a smile. “I don’t have a special someone yet but I’ll keep it in mind.”

Alice leaned against the counter, cocking her head. “Are you sure? Because I really do appreciate the help.”

“I figured I’d keep acting as a hobby until I was older. Because I felt that pressure, and that people would say, ‘Oh, that’s nepotism.’ I decided that as long as I felt confident and worked hard for it, instead of having it handed to me, no one could take that away from me. I don’t have any insecurity about it. I never got any job because of my sisters. I could have pulled a few strings through them, but I never needed to.”

“Perfect for Mr. Julian the high-powered attorney!” She said, smiling devilishly.

She looked at how it was getting everywhere and frowned. “Now, I’m not so sure. You think this is safe for two year-olds?” She asked. “Last thing I want is to make headlines as the awful aunt who hurt her nieces with glitter ribbon.” She said.

“Even if he tries to get it out of his office, the glitter will remain.”

Alice was pretty sure it’d be fine, but she wanted to double check. She looked at the label of the ribbon, trying to find any warnings. “Craft supplies are pretty good with warnings, but I can’t find one on here. It should be fine, I mean everything looks like it’s covered in glitter in the toy sections of Target. But I can give you some of the just shiny stuff if you’d rather have that.”

“You can just set the bags on the counter.” She rummaged around one of her bags, pulling out some things she had bought for her shop, since she had decided to stop there first. “Seriously, if there’s a certain flower you like, I’m willing to give you some. Or you can impress someone and give them flowers.”
