Reading "The Spear Cuts Through Water" for my book club and can't figure out if I like the book or not. My friend who let me borrow her copy declared "It's dogshit!" but honestly it's not even my least-favorite book club book (that's "The Amber Owl" or maybe "The Grace Year", I deeply dislike YA)

Things I like: intriguing worldbuilding, characters all have personality, cute gay romance, the actual plot is compelling.

Things I dislike: confusing bullshit nested framing devices and constantly-shifting POV, general pretentiousness, sometimes the level of brutality feels gratuitous, just too damn long in general, I don't have a good excuse for liking this more than The Amber Owl when they're actually fairly similar in terms of vibes imo.
