the other thing about claiming tradwives have a fetish is that it really reveals the issue in consent politics. the idea is that there is no actual moral value positive or negative in how these men treat women or even how societally women are denied rights; the issue becomes only whether or not she’s agreed to it, whether or not she likes it — basically, whether a man who wants to abuse and control a woman is able to find the right target, or can convince a woman to put up with it. it’s true that it’s consistent with the consent argument of bdsm. there’s no moral value in hitting your partner, only whether you are able to find an acceptable partner to hit. (it’s also consistent with consent models or rape law; there is no actual act or circumstance which constitutes rape, an act becomes rape if a man can’t find a woman able to be convinced to submit) it places the burden on the woman to prove she didn’t want what happened to her so that she can access intervention, provides no help at all to women who do romanticize or eroticize male violence and control, and still provides no meaningful definition of abuse.
right...we don't do this to men. We don't think this way about men. If a woman wants to buy a males consent SHE is seen as being immoral and the moral judgement is on her. Whereas when a man wants to buy a woman's body society doesn't put moral judgement on his desires it's just well find a woman who will allow that. It's understood that no man wants to be hit. It's understood that no man etc. This is an example of how we humanize men and we don't think of women as fully human. The reason why there's no market for male prostitutes isnt because "women can just get free sex" or "women don't want that" it's because women respect men too much to put them in that position. Women feel uncomfortable putting men in a subhuman position like that.
That being said I do think tradwives do sort of have a fetish for it. They're sexually attracted to that role, what else would u call it.
Takamine and Kazakami being unwitting foils of each other is just soooo good. And the build up to it was alos crazy smazing considering that it's not really....as hyped up as it could be? They're rivals, they're friends, they're classmates, they butt heads, so on. One of them works so hard. The other seems to get everything easily. One folds under pressure but manages to make everything count. The other has had constant pressure over his life and thus has lost confidence in having life count at all. And I just love how subtle their relationship is, too. How even though Kazakami gives Takamine a migraine, she still does believe in him and doesn't let herself be weighed down by either jealousy or pity. It's camaraderie...and that's all it needs to be. Takamine in some ways valued the pressure Kazakami's existence gave her. Kazakami found a break from his pressures in his high school friendships, Takamine included. And I just think they're neat.
Are there any specific videos you recommend for someone who wants to learn how to draw?
I honestly don’t really recommend any videos at all. At least not the kind I’m guessing you’re asking about. I can’t think of any videos that have helped me beyond some reels that showed how some of procreate’s hidden advanced tools work.. The majority of art tutorials online are repeating stuff by the masters but said through a telephone game of hundreds of people. I’ve yet to find one that didn’t feel contrived or is showing a very individualized stylistic technique that wouldn’t work for everyone
As an example for why I don’t like video tutorials: I recently watched a color theory tutorial on youtube because it had a kinda weird thumbnail, and it turns out that the artist had a very intense vendetta against the color green. So the whole video felt like a waste of time because I can’t trust a color theory lesson from someone who 1) hates and tries to avoid an entire color 2) relies on the curve tool and adjusting until it “looks right” which is not a good way to learn colors. I could clock that because I’ve been drawing for a long time but the majority of the comments from beginner-intermediate artists took it as gospel, unfortunately. So I heavily caution stuff like that..
If you learn best from video/audio, here’s some video lectures that may bore you to death as soon as you see the time stamps but hey it’s worth it if you’re dedicated. Should note that you should copy everything, not just idly watch it
Some good books are Anatomy for Sculptors and Color and Light/other books by James Gurney. Here are some free PDFs for Andrew Loomis (best for beginners is “fun with a pencil”). Copy the drawings, not just idly read it. Visual art is an extremely practice-intensive field
Something that helped me that I don’t often see get mentioned is being able to do formal analysis, which is actually an art history thing, but helps you be able to understand various artistic jargon and helps with the ability to analyze other people’s works
But here’s an alternate “how aucatgirl learned to draw, very slowly but with minimal burnout and having a ton of fun with it”
1) Figure out what you want to draw first on a very base level and get excited about improving
My first sketchbook is full of very bad drawings of various female characters I liked at the time because that’s what I wanted to draw (and still do). I wasn’t trying to make them good but as I kept going I discovered my biggest limitations (drawing full bodies, hands, posing, while I didn’t struggle as much at expressions) and that’s when I started the whole learning process
1B) Keep old art so you have a baseline
It’s hard to know how good you’ve gotten if you’re throwing away old stuff. I frequently do redraws of old work for a confidence boost
2) Draw from life and draw the cubes and circles and cylinders (you can make it fun however you need)
The “boring” part where you get a CHEAP sketchbook or even those cheaper spiral notebooks (this is so you don’t get a sense of guilt about “ruining” it) and a CHEAP pencil and start drawing stuff around you. And I don’t mean just pretty trees and passerby and stuff, I mean, also draw cabinets, power lines, trash bags on the side of the road, laundry basket, trinkets, coffee machines, sinks.. The most vital skill to drawing is the ability to draw from observation, because that allows you draw basically anything from a reference
And then taking advantage of websites like line of action for figure challenges. You don’t have to spend like, hours upon hours on any of this. I learned to get better at posing this way, and more recently how to draw various animals by spending about 15 minutes a day on line of action. It goes by super fast
Reward yourself by drawing something self indulgent after. All practice no play makes beginner artist a dull boy
3) Follow a ton of artists that inspire you and that you want to mimic to a degree, privately study and trace/copy your favorites
“Your art style” is an amalgamation of styles that you like and that you stole various elements from and that naturally just takes time and also ideally never stops evolving. People get weird and stingy about tracing/copying but as long as you don’t post it it’s fine lol. Copying the art of masters is literally how artists learned prior to the advent of the internet so like. Just do it who gaf!!
A fun way to do this is to do manga colorings of styles you like, but specifically, tracing over the line art to make your own new line art rather than just getting rid of the white background. This doubles as coloring practice
4) The basics of color theory are not actually that daunting and are necessary to know no matter how many people online whine about not understanding it (I used to be this person, it’s not that bad)
Fun way to practice colors: color palette challenges!! It forces you to think about colors in terms of their values as well as balancing them out compositionally
5) Basics of composition
ALL visual artists (including graphic designers, photographers) have seen some variation of this image and unfortunately you gotta know it at least on a basic level
Fun way to learn it: go onto digital museum archives like the Met and match old paintings to different types of composition so you can see how it looks in action, or even do it with various digital artists online (preferably people with more advanced art)
6) Perspective (specifically foreshortening) is relatively advanced so it’s fine if it takes time to grasp it
I’m actually not very good at it still. Especially when it comes time to stylizing, because perspective itself is often stylized.. learn one-point, then two-point, etc. this is where getting or having a ruler is handy
was thinking about how aang is constantly thrown off by how much katara wants to touch him in book 1, and how this could mean it’s a cultural thing not a personal thing but also both
he doesn’t start hugging her back till the end of book 1 and even in book 2 he’s still thrown off by her cheek kisses. every time she initiates a new type of physical interaction, he has a confused or surprised reaction. the one time he initiates a hug is in the serpent’s pass after he initially rejected katara’s hug from earlier. in book 3, he initiates more physical interactions but it still doesn’t add up to the amount of times katara has in total. outside of katara, the only other time i can think of him reaching out to to touch someone is toph when he held her hand because she was feeling vulnerable.
even when i think of the flashbacks, i don’t really recall him getting a hug from gyatso or anyone. obviously the circumstances in the flashbacks are a bit tense but in general, the air nomads don’t seem to be that big on physical affection among friends or even pupils and teachers. gyatso gives him a pat on the head and that seems to be pretty much it when it comes to physical contact. the only being he hugs freely and consistently is appa 😭
anyway it’s just interesting to me to think of aang coming from a community of free-spirited monks and nuns who were not keen on too much touching and affection, being with katara, who comes from a culture or at least a family that hug and embrace each other whenever they feel like it. katara gets a hug from gran-gran, she hugs sokka’s annoying ass sometimes and he gives her a kiss on the cheek when he’s feeling particularly affectionate even if she gets the ick. plus, the water tribe is the only culture where the official greeting between people meeting for the first time includes physical contact.
individually, katara initiates platonic physical interactions with several characters to suggest that this is also just a part of her personality even if aang is definitely the one she likes to be affectionate with the most, let’s be clear!
anyway this is me once again cornplating about a certain monk and his physically affectionate girlfriend who’s also his girl best friend that likes to hug him, touch his face, kiss his cheek, etc.
