Waiting for me to say âOkâ so she can get into those treats/puzzles
Hey there guys!
This is a comic I did for a class in which I wanted to talk about puppy mills. This is a topic that really touches my heart and pains me to see, since nowadays I know my dog came from one of these. I just hope people donât make the same mistake I did. She is still the most loved dog ever, nothing will change that, but it hurts me I helped this industry. Get informed today guys! Thereâs lots of information online on how you can help fight this. You want a dog? Go to local shelter, go to a nice breeder, know your dog first! Dogs deserve better!

Hey look animal abuse for proffit.
How is lure coursing abuse? Itâs a dog sport that is done solely recreationally, no profit involved. -.- Thatâs like saying agility and obedience trials are animal abuse.
Some of those dogs are literally emaciated and you canât see why this is abuse? You are not supposed to see a dogâs skeleton through their skin.
If you were talking about your average dog breed, you would be correct. However, all of the dogs in this photoset are sighthounds which are physiologically very different from other types of dogs and naturally thin. I donât think any of them are emaciated for the following reasons:
1) Bits of skeleton should be visible on a healthy weight sighthound. If several ribs, the tips of the hips, and some of the spine are NOT visible, then the dog is overweight. Sighthounds are not Labs, and itâs unhealthy and unnatural for them to have anything more than a very minimal layer of body fat.
To use a real life example, hereâs my own Italian Greyhound when he was overweight:
For anything other than a sighthound, he looks to be pretty healthy and even slim here. However, at this weight my vet/boss recommended running bloodwork on him to ensure that he wasnât hypothyroid and then put him on a diet if everything came back okay (and it did).
Here he is now at a healthy weight:
Notice that several ribs, his hip tips, and some spine are showing. By ânormalâ dog standards, heâs underweight, but by sighthound standards heâs ideal, hence the most recent body score he got from a vet was a perfect 5.
2) If these dogs were actually emaciated, they wouldnât be able to run, much less compete in a sport like lure coursing. Dogs that are starving are lethargic, not capable athletes. For the past several years, Iâve been working at a vet clinic that often gets referrals from local animal control, meaning itâs not uncommon for us to see dogs that are severely neglected and emaciated. These dogs are always lethargic and sometimes have trouble just walking; in some cases, they are so weak that they have to be syringe-fed while holding their heads up because they donât have the strength to lift them. There is no way a dog that is emaciated would have the energy to run hundreds of yards at 45 mph, which is what dogs involved in coursing do.
3) Dogs that are emaciated have NO muscle tone, unlike the dogs in this photoset. A body that is starving cannot produce muscle; it devours it for nutrients as it struggles to stay alive. Here is a post containing graphic photos of what an actual emaciated sighthound looks like.
4) The only dogs in this photoset whose ribs are clearly visible are Azawakhs, which have an even more naturally thin physiology than any other sighthound. Azawakhs are special among sighthound breeds in that they have âdryâ muscle, which lays more flat against their skeletal structure than that of other dogs, meaning much of their skeletal structure is visible on a healthy weight dog. Itâs just how they are. Quoting the AKC breed standard:
[An Azawakhâs] bone structure and musculature are transparent beneath fine and lean skin.
And the FCI breed standard:
Particularly slim and elegant, the Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great slenderness. Its bone structure and muscles show through thin and dry skin.
5) It is very difficult to tell whether a dog is underweight from a single photo. I made a post illustrating this on my personal blog because I have two sighthounds and get accused of starving them from time to time by misinformed people. In particular, the photos in this photoset arenât great for judging the weight of any of the dogs because the poses are so extreme, stretching skin and muscle to their absolute tightest over the skeleton. Whether the dog is taking a breath, whether the dog is hot or dehydrated at the time the photo was taken, and the lighting of the photo will also affect how thin they look. Of course, in any photo where there is obvious muscle tone, that immediately rules out emaciation anyway.
6) Even if these dogs were emaciated, thatâs still irrelevant to whether lure coursing as a sport is cruel or abuse. It would be the choice of the individual owner that is cruel, not the sport (which participants spend money on rather than earning it, by the way). It would be a really idiotic choice though if the owner wanted their dog to win, since as previously discussed, starved dogs donât make good athletes. It would be like a racecar driver showing up at a race with an empty fuel tank and two flat tires!
Also important to note is that youâd be able to see bones on the long haired sighthounds if they didnât have their fur! Especially the Afghans since theyâre another desert type hound and usually have dryer/leaner muscles than European sighthounds (like Greyhounds).
I have to jump in here. Â Yes many dogs are treated well, IF they are good runners. Their running careers only last 2-5 years. Then they are retired hopefully to a good home, but no guarantees. If they are not good runners they are often neglected and starved eventually killed. Â They are a commodity and if they arenât winning their owners wonât waste money on them. They are kept in layers of large cages when they arenât training or racing. Several years ago we adopted a rescued Greyhound and yes they are often starved. Our dog was pure skeleton there is a difference from a lean dog and a starved dog. Â Our dog also had many open sores across his back where he had been shoved into his crate. He was a sweet gentle creature and it took months to heal him. Here are a couple of links to inform yourself about the abuse of these gentle animals.

To anyone looking for good dogs look into rescuing a Greyhound. They do take a lot of patience and love at first to help them adjust to a home. NOTHING in a home is familiar to them eg stairs, sliding glass doors, mirrors. They are well behaved and easily trained because they are used to being told what to do.  Ours was wonderful with our then toddler. The are used to being surrounded by other dogs so having another dog is recommended. It doesnât have to be a Greyhound.
This post is about lure coursing, so Iâm rather confused how commercial Greyhound racing is at all relevantâŠ?
All the dogs are treated well because theyâre pets and only compete for fun. My dogs do coursing and theyâre pretty terrible at it, but it doesnât mean I starve them (?!).
Also they linked us to PETA. I donât trust anyone who sources PETA.
Iâll just say again, if anyone is interested in knowing the truth (not put out by propaganda groups) about greyhound racing, I am willing to provide them links and share what I have learned. However, Iâve also learned many people are just content believing they are abused despite solid evidence otherwise.Â
Iâll just state here: Greyhounds that flunk out because they are bad racers are adopted out. Greyhounds who are injured are treated and then adopted out. Greyhounds are not starved, abused, or beaten if they lose a race. Period.Â
This is so important. Read, ask people questions and learnâ it will change your life.
Again, Loki never made it to a race. He ran the opposite way. Adopted, not killed. Lokiâs brother layed down on the track, adopted not kill. Another of Lokiâs littermate was a bad racer, adopted, not killed. My friendâs greyhound Jackpot injured himself in a race, got treated then adopted, NOT KILLED.
To the person quoting effing PETA (barf): Greyhound Racing =/= Lure Coursing!!!!! Iâm sure Lokiâs mom and other greyhound peeps know way more about racing and retired racers than I do but I do know about coursing. Dogs that course are peopleâs pets competing for fun and itâs allowing sighthounds to do what they were bred for.. RUNNING! A bag on a lure moves, they see it, they chase, they have fun, they go home and continue to be someoneâs pet.

Fucking fur moms. Whatâs abuse is letting your dog waste away his life on a couchâŠ
As someone who doesnât do any sports with her dog, I am not an animal abuser because my dog enjoys hanging out on the couch as much as she enjoys going on walks and hikes.
Abuse my ass. Lure Coursing isnt abusive. These dogs are enjoying themselves and doing what they were bred to do in a controlled and safe environment. If you think lure coursing is abuse, Iâd hate to know what you think of those dogs history and reason for being created.
I gotta be doing something right if my dog getâs damn excited at the word âTrainingâ for training sessions, right? lol
I canât hate on dogs
Dog hating is just not my style
I donât hate pure breeds I donât hate mixed breeds/mutts I donât hate big dogs I donât hate small dogs I donât hate certain breeds Sure there may be breeds Iâd not like to own, but that is entirely for logical reasons of what I know I can handle in a dog and what I know I CANâT handle in a dog ( besides, that does NOT mean I donât dislike/hate the dogs I know I canât handle) ( Iâd make an awful owner for something like the Rottweiler or the Siberian Husky, but still adore the breeds )
person 1: I HATE (insert âbig scary dog breedsâ)! Theyâre all vicious killers out to get us and the children! Monsters! the lot of them! they all need to DIE! and their owners must obviously be damn crazy!
person 2: What!?! Donât blame the breed! blame the deed! Besides its those yappy little rat dogs that are more vicious and dangerous!! the only reason their attacks arenât in the media is because it isnt a ( insert âbig scary dog breedsâ)!! Theyâre the ones that you need to watch out for! theyâre not even dogs! disgusting rodents! why would anyone want to own that?!
me: * looks at my Maltese mix, American Staffy mix, and pet Rats * me: * Hits both person 1 and person 2 with a shovel named âIgnorant idiotâ * me: * Goes back to playing and loving on my âvicious disgusting monstrous dogs and filthy ratsâ *
1. ) Donât hate on people who prefer to own pure bred dogs 2. ) Donât hate on people who prefer to own mixed/mutt dogs 3. ) Donât hate on anyone for having preferences in the kind of dog they want 4. ) Do hate on puppy mills, backyard breeders, abusers, neglecters, and the people who dump their dogs at the shelter for unacceptable reasons instead.
I love the idea of giving dogs food/treat puzzles. Itâs wonderful to see them use their nose and their brains to work out how to get to the food/treats.
Voodoo waiting behind the scenes at the War Dog Memorial that accompanies the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall. Itâs been an interesting couple of days reconnecting with old friends that we havenât seen in a few years.
And itâs always fun giving Voodoo a chance to practice his Gremlin look for the camera. Seriously, if you see that look on him, get your hands out of the way. An attack on the ball is imminent.
