eddie's subplot in this episode lowkey just being that he prayed to god for the first time in a while and immediately got gaystabbed about it.
I need Eddie to get into a natural disaster with Theo and lose sight of him, even if it's only for a few minutes, to mirror the tsunami. Good Lord would it be delicious.
eddie going to the chapel to pray for athena because he knows bobby would've done it and bobby left his faith to him when he died
Eddie stabbed and bleeding out alone in the elevator
Buck trying to call the elevator for him and Harry
It not working but flashing E.
I bet 🙃🙃🙃
christopher deploying theo on buddie like a small nuclear bomb. 'hey spiderman you know what would make buck make a funny face? if you asked him when he and dad are getting married.'
'theo c'mere, guess what, if we lock dad and buck in the bedroom together we can totally jump on the sofa, isn't that cool?'
'here have a marker, yeah you can draw on the door. why don't you draw a big heart and I can write both their names in? if you tell them it's because you love them they won't get mad at you :)'
it's not just for buddie he'll do it for his own gain too. sometimes he just gives theo and jee sugar and confetti and nobody bothers him while he's playing video game for hours. he hears the adults running and panicked in the living room and lies back with the satisfaction of a job well done.
Just sitting here thinking about Buck trying to get Theo into sports or something so that he can find an outlet for his endless energy. So Buck shows him a bunch of different pamphlets for sports at the rec department: soccer, tee ball, basketball, etc. To no one’s surprise, Theo seems fascinated by basketball.
Of course, it’s basketball. Buck hates basketball, but if Theo wants to try it then he’ll do whatever that kid wants. When he goes to sign Theo up for the sport, they say they’ll have to add him to a waiting list. The reason? They don’t currently have enough parent volunteers to coach another 4-5 basketball team.
Buck knows nothing about basketball. Literally nothing - not that this seriously matters because it’s 4-5 year olds - but he can’t just let them not have a team that Theo and can play on. So what does he do? He tells the rec he’s got a perfect volunteer to coach and signs Eddie up.
After doing so, Buck is a little worried that Eddie is going to be mad that he signed him up for this without asking so he makes a big dinner, gets his truck washed, buys his favorite beer at the store, and goes across down for Eddie’s favorite desert. But it turns out he didn’t need to do all that because Eddie’s not even remotely mad. He’s thrilled, telling Buck, “Theo wants to play basketball? Are you kidding? This is perfect! Finally there’s a Buckley that wants to play basketball with me!”
He shows up to their next shift with a pair of basketball court shoes and a tiny LA Lakers jersey for Theo. As well as a dry-erase clipboard with the basketball court outlined on it and markers because he’s planning on making practice plans during their down time. The rest of the 118 are so confused as to why Eddie is the one coaching this team and not Buck, and keep sharing so many funny looks. But Buck can’t stop smiling because Eddie is just so excited.
When the first practice rolls around Eddie picks up Theo to take him to the gym while Buck goes to pick up Chris from some after school thing and bring the post-practice snacks for the kids because Eddie might be the coach, but Buck is the official snack dad. When Chris and Buck show up at the gym they stake seat on the bleachers with the other parents waiting for practice to end and watch. It’s a little chaotic because they’re 4 year old boys, but Eddie is so good with kids that they’re latching on to every word he says. Are the kids any good? Not in the slightest, but they’re trying their best and Eddie is beaming the whole time.
One of the mom’s comes and sits next to them, introduces herself and asks, “Which one is yours?” When he points out Theo, she says, “Oh, Theo? That means you must be Coach Eddie’s husband. God, you really know how to pick him. That man’s a miracle worker. You’re so lucky.” Buck nearly chokes, but before he can correct her, Chris pipes up beside him with a smirk replying loud enough for her to hear, “Yeah, Buck. We’re so lucky you’ve got a husband like dad.” Buck glares at him because now all the team parents are going to think he and Eddie are actually married, but Chris just gives him a shit-earring grin before going back to scrolling on his phone.
When they take turns practicing shooting at the end the only one to make a basket is Theo and everyone is so excited. The other kids cheer for him, but the first thing he does is go rushing over to Eddie who scoops him up in a big hug as Theo giggles with excitement over his basket, talking a mile a minute by giving him a replay of the shot as if Eddie hadn’t just witnessed it. Eddie just listens intently, nodding along grinning widely as he reacts to Theo’s retelling. Buck physically can’t stop the way his chest cracks in half at seeing the two of them together. Beside him Chris sighs and says, “Those heart eyes you’re wearing right now? That’s why people think you’re married.”
Buck scoffs, “I do not look at your dad with heart eyes.”
“Buck, you’ve looked at my dad with heart eyes every single day since I was seven. I know what it looks like. It’s seared into my brain.”
Buck doesn’t have time to think about Chris’s comment because Eddie calls for practice to end. After a quick chat and a team chant, Eddie directs the kids over to Buck and Chris to get snacks. In the chaos of Buck and Chris handing out snacks he doesn’t realize at first that Theo hasn’t joined them. Not until he’s got two extra snack baggie and juice boxes (one labeled with Spider-Man and the other Coach Eddie). When he looks up he sees Theo still running around on the court giggling wildly, carrying the basketball as Eddie chases him around. Eventually Eddie scoops up the 4-year-old and lifts him up to basket and lets Theo dunk. With a cheer, Theo kicks his legs for Eddie to let him down to he can get the ball and they can do it again.
That feeling comes back as he watches them this time, only for Chris to elbow him and tease, “You’re doing it again.”
Buck thinks in that moment… okay, yeah. Maybe I am… and maybe… maybe Maddie was right. It wouldn’t be so crazy…
walk with me. buck trying to staunch eddie's bullet wound in the elevator while talking frantically. eddie. eddie look at me. stay with me. i've got you eddie eddie do not close your eyes please eddie.
and eddie is trying, he really is, but it hurts and he's tired and he's about to close his eyes when buck snaps you can't die, i just got my fucking will updated, do you know how annoying it'll be to change it again.
so eddie groans out what does that even mean, and buck opens his mouth but that's when the doors open and the paramedics flood in.
afterwards in the hospital room eddie wakes up to chris playing with theo at his bedside and theo goes hi eddie!!!!!!!!! and chris goes dad!!!!!! and eddie's heart thumps all big and loud in his chest. buck runs in at the sound of their voices and their eyes meet and buck's mouth forms the shape of his name before the doctors come.
and later when chris is out distracting theo eddie goes so. your will? and buck just smiles at him with red-rimmed eyes and steady faith as he says well, to be fair, you did it to me first.
not maddie?
buck laughs. three kids might be a bit much for her-- and besides, she's already raised me once, i wanted to give her a break. and before eddie can frown and inform buck that taking care of him isn't work buck continues and says: he needs somebody who believes in him. nobody has ever believed in me the way you do. nobody will believe in him the way you can. that's what i want for him.
and eddie just stares at buck, stunned, as his heart monitor goes crazy.
sorry for moaning when you ripped off your bloody shirt
so buck noticed he was missing first… that’s buddie canon to me
the fact that eddie is so often mislabeled as an angry man by people who don't know him and yet buck sits there with a shit-eating expression on his face while eddie looks at him with genuine murder in his eyes and the rest of his face set in stone and just goes 🫵hangry
eddie: 😐
various members of the public, for some reason: he's terrifying, who knows what violence he's capable of
buck: his tummy is literally empty
food being Buck’s love language + Eddie gets cranky when he doesn’t eat = Buck always making sure Eddie is fed
BOBBY - Buck doesn't eat. I should teach him these recipes so he can have something to do and get the benefits of the product
BUCK - Eddie gets cranky when he doesn't eat. I should share some of what I made with him so we can both be happy
And I'm supposed to be normal about that...
Buck shielding Theo from seeing his dead parents like be shielded Christopher from seeing the dead bodies floating in the water during the tsunami 😭
Actually, I can't stop thinking about the Bobby of it all. Bobby who lost a son. Bobby who was so reluctant to let himself love Buck and the team because he didn't want to replace his family. Bobby who sacrificed himself so that everyone he loved in L.A. could live.
Buck has been the replacement son three times now — two times he was forced into that role and one time, with Bobby, he bullied his way in. He never felt like he was a replacement with Bobby because Bobby never let him be a replacement. Bobby wasn't trying to recreate what he had with Bobby Jr. He was just trying to love this poor lost kid who reminded him a little bit of himself.
Buck chose Bobby and the Bobby let himself open up enough to choose Buck. That's the difference. With Buck's parents they were trying to save Daniel and then Buck was a constant reminder of that 'failure'. Bonnie took Buck because he looked like Derek. It was never about Buck with them. But it was with Bobby.
Bobby loved him for exactly who he was. Not for who he wanted him to be. And now Buck is going to work on letting him go and moving on. Just like Bobby did when he finally opened himself up to the 118 and the family that chose him.
also big big fan of buck hearing eddie's voice and it immediately hitting the 'christopher's safety above all else' override in his brain. eddie walked into his lawyer's office that one time knowing one thing above all else and by god was he correct
if we disregard the crossover the transition from 9x12 to 9x13 is genuinely so beyond devastating. buck's entire conversation with maddie is foreshadowing for what he's gonna have to do in 9x13.
"that's what families do. no matter how hard it is or how far apart they are. they find a way home. even if they have to fight like hell to get there." buck is going to be kidnapped and tortured and have no idea if eddie made it out alive or maybe even be told that eddie died on impact. and he's gonna have to somehow find the will to live because if eddie's dead then he's gonna have to crawl on hands and knees to get to Los angeles and Christopher if that's what it takes
i spent my whole commute thinking about the way that as soon as eddie recovers from his initial surprise that buck came running into the hospital, buck wants to see the damage, and eddie switches directly into his Nobly Suffering schtick. evading eye contact. his little mm yeah as he acknowledges, yes. it’s going to be quite the shiner, that’s correct buck. he covers his black eye back up and is suddenly subtly playing up how injured he is now that buck here in a way he was NOT doing at all with athena and alex before he arrived??? eyes closed, faint grimace, he’s so tortured for a solid 2 second beat. eddie 100% wanted buck to fuss over him you can’t convince me otherwise. which makes it even funnier that, instead of any of that, buck’s like. good news. this is totally marketable. sex sells eddie! :) and eddie who literally wanted to play a lead role in your local hurt/comfort tag on ao3 is like. wait no. betrayed. :(
I legitimately can’t stop thinking about this post whenever I see this gif so offering a visual of Eddie playing up the injury
