We're showing our appreciation by raising money to help Switchboard
In the 16th century same-sex activities were considered sinful, unlawful and punishable by death. In 1952 Alan Turing, to name a well-known gay man, was prosecuted for homosexual acts because "gross indecency" was a criminal act in the UK.
Today, in the 21st century LGBT citizens are no longer committing a crime but that doesn’t mean that the hatred has stopped. Too many of them are still subjected to fierce hostility or find themselves rejected, even by their own families.
The LGBT Switchboard has helped many who were in need of kind words and surely prevented plenty of desperate souls from committing suicide when everything became too much.
Actor, writer and producer Mark Gatiss, openly gay for many years and happily married to Ian Hallard, is a well-known and active patron for the LGBT Switchboard. This makes it even more alarming that a lot of hate and vitriol have been disseminated over the past two weeks, and much of this has been directed (and unfairly so) at this kind man. There are many of us who are distressed over these posts and tweets and want to do something positive, instead of focusing on the negative that has been perpetuated.
February is LGBT History month and to honour and respect history, we have chosen the LGBT Switchboard + helpline to support Mark Gatiss and the work that he has done as patron for the charity and on behalf of LGBT people.
If you’re unable to donate and instead want to make an act of kindness to someone instead please reply to this post and let us know!
Thanks

A group of rough looking boys walked past me today and all I heard of their conversation was “he’s got that anxiety disorder bro so I went with him so he’d be more comfortable” and it made me realise the world isn’t all that bad
#this is team skull
The pet store I worked at had a pen with rabbits near the front door. On every side of the pen were huge signs saying “You can pet me, but don’t pick me up!” One day two absolutely huge guys came in and one immediately reaches into the pen to grab a rabbit. Before i could say anything his friend grabbed his arm and asked him “did you see the sign?” He said “yeah! it says that you can pick them up but don’t pet them!” Then he went quiet for a moment and softly said “I didn’t read it right did I?” And his friend just puts his arm on his shoulder and said “its ok, i know you’ve got that thing where words get mixed up. Let just pet these cute lil shits” And I still haven’t gotten over that interaction.
I was walking my dog through Boston bc he likes the likes car rides. He’s a little thing tbh we call him short and long. So this huge scary man with a full beard approaches me like “hey can my buddy and I pet your dog? He gets nervous around dogs but your’s is so small I think it’s a good place to start.” Ofc I was like “yes he’s very friendly!” So this guy brings his equally big friend over and they sit on the floor while this man looks terrified of my tiny dog so big man number one asks “can I pick him up?” And i say yes so he picks him up and puts him on man number two’s lap and man number two is abt to freak out and his friend straight up just goes “hey man, it’s okay just relax I’d never let anything hurt you. He’s a good boy.” I’ll never forget it ever bc I know that man looked at me (5'3 , glasses, probably wearing a sweater vest) and my dog (kinda goofy looking little thing) and was like ‘ah yes the two least intimidating living things I’ve seen in Boston all day he’ll feel relaxed around them’ and went out of his way to help his friend. It makes me so happy

New Canon Incoming
So for anyone new to fandom, here’s what’s going to happen: the new series will air, and a lot of really committed, vocal, prominent fans will hate it.
They will loudly and frequently express their disappointment and anger. They will feel betrayed by the writers, the actors, the directors, and by every fan who doesn’t feel the same way. The words “out of character” will be batted around in relation to the new series. You will hear: “They did it all wrong! Don’t they know these characters at all?”
Disappointed fans will complain loudly for X amount of time, attempting to convince others that the new series had ruined everything that came before, after which they will flame out as hard and brilliantly as they can. It will feel like a big deal. It will feel like a big loss, like the fandom is bleeding out, like it’s shrinking. Like it’s not as good as it used to be.
Be not afraid. This happens every time there’s new canon. Rest assured that it always happens, and it isn’t a special feature of any one fandom. Some people cannot handle more story, no matter how good or well-constructed that story is. If it isn’t what they were expecting, if the characters change and grow, some fans cannot and will not cope. And that’s okay! Follow your bliss, friend!
But so many more people will flood into the fandom. Fandoms double, or triple, or more in size when there’s new canon. There will be new artists, new writers, new meta thinkers. They will bring us new perspectives, and you will make new friends. Lots of them!
Looking forward to new canon is also looking forward to a whole new fannish culture. Are you ready?
Just bringing this back.
Thank you, this answers the question I posted just now! Sticking with the fandom!
Wow
Am I really not following any Sherlock fans on here that liked Mary, or is it all Johnlockers that are exultant about her being gone? Tumblr, do I have to leave you and all my (previously) beloved fic writers and fandom “friends”?
advice from dad
So, my Dad is a 73-year-old Mexican man who has lived here since he was 16. He was in Watts during the riots in 1965; in 1992, when I was in LA, as soon as the Rodney King verdict was announced, he called me, told me what was coming, told me how to stay safe. He has survived horrible living conditions, being kidnapped, physical abuse, prejudice, discrimination. He learned English, got his green card, pays his taxes, works hard, and has three daughters.
I thought he would be devastated today.
But he wasn’t.
He saw that I was sad and angry, and he asked me why, pretending he had no idea. I almost started crying. And then he said, “no se me chicopale.”
It means, don’t lose heart. Don’t give in to despair.
I asked him why he wasn’t upset.
He said, basically, “The world has always been this way. There are always people who are afraid, who are racist, who are awful. This is not new. And it will never go away. He won. We can’t do anything about that. All we can do is what we can do. Fight for what matters to us. Take care of each other. And don’t lose heart. And here, I got these unsalted cashews for you and a bag of jamaica drink mix and can you show me how to use the new washing machine because it’s not working.”
And, for reasons I can’t articulate, I feel a little better.
As a Jew who just spent two hours talking to a rabbi for the first time in thirty years, please give your dad a hug from me.
Tikun olam, the rabbi reminded me. Literally, it means world repair. It means we live in an imperfect world, and instead of looking to the Heaven of the next world, it’s our duty to be a light in THIS world – to protect those people who need our protection, to work for social justice, and to improve the world as a whole.
The world needs our light.
i was talking to my mother (prior to the election) and expressing a lot of fear and doubt and just the general ‘ill assume everything is going to be terrible until im proven wrong because that’s how i guard my heart.’ and she said ‘why has allah (swt) said to all the prophets when He approached them?’ i said, ‘i dont know? did He say the same thing?’ ‘la takhaaf,’ she said. ‘don’t be afraid. you don’t know what’s on the other side, but have courage and move forward. la takhaaf.’
Tikun olam. I like that one. It’s pretty much all I’ve got.
“I’m going to be around campus for the Thanksgiving holiday. This is my first year at Cal and away from home. What should I expect? What is there to do?”
Hi there! Unfortunately, I’m a Bay Area native so I’ve never had to spend a thanksgiving/winter/spring break on campus. However, I’ve had a lot of out-of-state friends or even friends from SoCal who chose to spend the Thanksgiving holiday at Cal! From their experiences I can tell you to expect a couple of things.
First, be prepared for most campus-related places to be closed on Thanksgiving Day itself. The dining halls, certain classrooms and libraries, etc. Make sure before you go somewhere that the location will be open. And that goes for non-campus related places too! Don’t go all the way to a certain bookstore in SF or a cool cafe in San Jose just to realize that it’s closed! Second, make sure you find out who else is staying on campus! No one wants to spend the entire break alone. Sure, sleeping in and watching TV in your quiet dorm/apartment may be fun the first two days, but use the free time you’ll have to hang out with someone else you know is staying in Berkeley. Also, from growing up around the Bay I know that there will be plenty to do! Almost every county in the Bay has at least one Turkey Trot 5K going on. If you’re interested in fitness or if you just want to burn some calories before feasting that night, then try to sign up for one of those runs. Also, Black Friday has become a huge deal around America and plenty of malls will be having sales right here in the Bay, too. Bay Street in Emeryville, Westfield in SF, Stoneridge in Pleasanton, and Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek are all relatively close shopping centers you may want to visit! No matter what you decide to do or where you decide to go, remember to be safe.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Simran
I’m sorry you’re unable to spend Thanksgiving away from family. I know it’s hard but hold on! This year, my family is traveling abroad, so I’m stuck in Berkeley, too. At first, I felt down because I had realized it was my first Thanksgiving away from home as well, but I decided I would make the best of it. I took it upon myself to invite people that are also staying in Berkeley to have a Friendsgiving. Thanksgiving is the time of year where you’re not only thankful for family, but also the amazing people in your community! Due to the costly airplane tickets and sold-out bus rides, there are quite a good number of people staying near campus this year. Perhaps, you could plan your own Friendsgiving! :) Invite a few people over that are in the same situation as you. Expect Berkeley to be a tad quiet, but the Thanksgiving feels will still be present! There might be fewer cars and students j-walking on the streets. Most of the shops might be closed on Thanksgiving Day, so if you’re planning to cook up a feast, make sure you buy the food beforehand! Other than that, it will still be the same ol’ Berkeley.
Some things you can do include: 1) Pay It Forward: Volunteer to serve an amazing dinner to those that are in worse situations than we are. They have open soup kitchens in the Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco area. 2) There is a Cirque du Soleil show taking place at AT&T park in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day. Grab a friend or two and head out for a fun show! 3) Go on a hike to the Fire Trails: With everyone out (or in) for the holidays, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the free.
Make this Thanksgiving worthwhile despite not being able to spend it with your family
Angela
i doubt there are any liberals reading my blog but if you’re there and you’re seeing your friends yell at nonvoters and third-party people or you’re tempted to do so yourself please take a step back, breathe a bit, calm down, and reconsider.
you were not failed by leftists tonight. you were failed months ago by a democratic party that ran a republican in blue clothing, by politicians who schemed and strategized and thought that a racist populist would be easy to beat, by the thousands of rightists or racists or fascists (or really all three) who went out and voted for trump even when nobody expected them to (the failure of the forecasts is another story)
a lot of people lost a usa that they thought they could believe in tonight. if you want it back, organize, build our own movement, our own power, and fight for it. the rich ain’t gonna give it to you
what do we do tho? like, honestly? what happens if he’s elected? what do we honest to god do?
We mourn, and then we move forward. We fight tooth and nail for every right he tries to take away. We exercise our right to free speech, loudly. We fight for our neighbors and our families and our friends. We stand up for the populations who can’t stand up for themselves. We chip away at his support. And in four years we unite to vote him out of office.
And in two years we vote for the most liberal fucking members of Congress we can get our hands on. Don’t forget midterm elections, and local elections. They matter, too. Big time.

Wise words from a wise man
I’ve seen a lot of curious people wanting to dive into classical music but don’t know where to start, so I have written out a list of pieces to listen to depending on mood. I’ve only put out a few, but please add more if you want to. hope this helps y’all out. :)

symphony no. 5, finale (tchaikovsky) (added by viola-ology)

pieces that just sound really cool:

and if you really just hate classical music in general:
4′33″ (cage)
a lot of these pieces apply in multiple categories, but I sorted them by which I think they match the most. have fun exploring classical music!
also, thank you to viola-ology and iwillsavemyworld for adding on! if you would like to add on your own suggestions, please reblog and add on or message me so I can give you credit for the suggestion!
I usually think of the 1812 overture as “I have too many emotions surging in different directions and need something that matches” music.
This makes me unexplainably happy
