four more weeks of being evil
evil. three weeks.
Just two more weeks of evil
JUST ONE MORE WEEK OF BEING EVIL YAYYYYYYAY YEAHHH YAHOOO
No longer evil.
So, I’m casting for a backyard production of Hamlet right now. We have several Limitations mainly based around the fact that our cast will be made up of a random assortment of my friends, none of whom are actors, and we’re going to perform it on book because I’m already asking too much of a bunch of tired mid-30 year olds, but I am thinking of a few ways to add my own spin to it:
Gender blind casting (as much a limitation as a deliberate choice)
Meta-casting: if I cast one friend as Gertrude i can cast his partner as the Ghost, and potentially also as Claudius. Not sure yet if I’ll follow through with that but it’s fun to consider
Getting my friend who plays trombone to play the royal flourishes from the audience.
This will be performed on my back patio and will use, among other entrances and exits, the door to the garage, which I think will be used to represent the afterlife - the Ghost will come & go from it, Ophelia will leave through it before she drowns, and also Hamlet will follow the ghost through it when they first meet.
“These swords are of a length?” And they’re two very obviously different fake swords
The Ghost will be wearing a silver sequin kaftan and a motorcycle helmet
Seeking ideas for alternate tunes to Ophelia’s singing that would be psychic damage to millennials
Maybe I should ask my ex to play Laertes (they’d be into it) (I’m playing Hamlet)
Update: casting sucks
I have one friend (C) whose best role is Polonius but I also think he’s the only person who could convincingly be Claudius. My alternate Polonius (M) is fine but also that’s the only role I feel strongly about for her so if I find another Claudius and move C to Polonius then I have to find a collection of smaller roles for M instead. I have three separate people that I think could be great as Laertes and whoever isn’t Laertes will probably be Roz and Guilder. Then I have two people who aren’t very strong actors and who I would actually just prefer not to cast at all but this is a backyard production and they’re committed so I need to find something for them.

many women are excited to get old and weird, but i have great news that it's fully possible to become weird now, before you get old. just imagine the heights of weirdness you will be able to reach in fifty years if you get started now. that's what I think
