Genuinely kind people don't get enough credit. People seem to think that being nice is just a personality trait, but it's actually a commitment to treat people well, even when it's hard. It's not just being nice to the people you like.

It's choosing to be kind to people when you're in a bad mood, or when they're being annoying.

It's choosing to be kind to people who your friends don't like.

It's choosing to be kind to people who you don't particularly like.

It's choosing to be kind to people who you envy.

I'm not saying that you can't be a kind person and stand up for yourself, or tell someone to fuck off when they're doing something genuinely harmful, but there are a million petty reasons people use to justify treating people badly.

It is a conscious choice, made over and over, often several times a day, to treat people with kindness and respect, even when they make it hard. So appreciate the consistently kind people in your life, because they work hard to be that way, and they really don't have to.

Something that comes up when I discuss kindness with people is that people who I experience as being kind believe that they're just faking it. They don't believe it counts if you're kind to someone who you're secretly annoyed by.

But that's exactly what kindness is. It's making the effort to treat people well when you don't feel like it.

If anything it should count MORE when it's not effortless.

I want to ramble a little bit about art community morals. Self deprecating and shitting on your own art is not only harmful to yourself but every other artist who sees your content. Someone, beginner or not, could see your drawing and think, “Wow, I want to draw like them one day!” and then see you call your art a piece of shit. They’d look at their own art and think theirs is even worse or doesn’t deserve to be shown at all.

Every artist is insecure that they’re not good enough, or that their drawings need to be better, or that they lack in skill or quality or don’t have talent.

Talent doesn’t exist. Skill is born from painstaking practice and time.

Encourage your fellow artists. Encourage yourself. Being hard on yourself to improve is good, but to an extent. You could completely take away someone’s passion for drawing.

Learning to draw isn’t linear. It doesn’t even have an end goal. Art is meant to be fun, meant to represent and advocate and inspire and express. You don’t have to live up to anyone’s expectations or be on the same level as others you see around you. Focus on your passion, what makes art fun, and what YOU want to draw.

Maybe this is a hot take or something, but this is a mentality that I too am trying to drill into myself.

Be kinder to others in the community, and especially be kinder to yourself. You never know how many people you could inspire day by day.

this messed up vintage cat sewing pattern has tormented me since i saw it & like some other folks have done in that post - i tried my hand at tweaking the pattern to resemble the illustration (and my personal tastes) a little more. i've ended up with this, which i have only tested at a small scale and not this final version exactly (where i have done such things as further widening the cheeks and finalizing the leg shapes.) i bestow it upon you nice folks now 👐

go forth and make weird little beanbag kittens! pls show me if you do!

My first attempt! I made the pattern a bit smaller as I wanted it to be able to fit in a pocket, but then (accidentally but perhaps unavoidably) sewed it with a wider seam allowance than the resized pattern indicated, so the face is proportionally a bit too big and I lost some detail in the ear shape. I'm pleased with it though! It was fun to make something and to do some handsewing.
