the victims are always just that. a note. a single word. my stalker was a track star - that i was dean’s list and an athlete in my own right didn’t matter, just that i could be ruining his life if i claimed he was in some way impacting mine. that i spiraled out of control, sank my grades, couldn’t sleep at night - i was reminded that i had barely enough evidence to start a fire, couldn’t i just keep it inside?
nobody ever says “man beats award-winning singer with a bright future”. our lives become so unimportant. recently my friend was raped and her headline on the local news read “honors student and boyscout accused of rape” and people were livid. how dare someone evil and inconsequential tear down the reputation of such a wholesome kid.
nobody cares she’s a girl scout, a volunteer at hospitals, an emt that has saved lives, is an honors student on the dean’s list - and none of this should have to be the case for her life to matter the same as his. she recently told me she got her first b+ in a class. people laughed at her for being inconsolable over the test. i understood what it meant. people saw what he was and judged her to be opposite, to somehow have to deserve it.
there’s a myth that a rapist has to be someone in an alley, someone you could sense, never a “good” guy you once played in band with. people think rapists have to be creepy and identifiable at a distance. but the man who held me down is a u.s. marine, spends his free time helping children in developing countries. he’s a good man, i’m reminded. it would ruin his life. it’s not fair of me.
his actions aren’t his now. they’re mine, somehow. i have to carry them with me. i never reported it. what would my headline even say. i’m just trying to ruin his life anyway.

Every time he opens his mouth to speak though, the biker yells “AHHHHHHH!!!” Until the man in the suit shuts up again. When the man in the suit takes a breath and opens his mouth, the biker doesn’t even let him get started and just screams “AHHHHH”…. This happens a few times.
