Warning: me ranting nonsense and Iron Lung spoilers and probably some rage
Contributing more in random thoughts on Iron Lung, since I'm healthily hyperfixated on the movie. Can we talk about how unprepared the Iron Lung submarine was, and the expedition all together? I know that because of low resources maintaining it was impossible, I'm not being demanding on first-class equipment in an apocalyptic environment, that is stupid. I will say however that for a limited amount of time and resources to get the sub operational again it's impressive. But my dude, the amount of missing essentials for Simon to be in the best conditions baffles me, it definitely makes me think that nobody entered the sub and checked the insides first before putting Simon in there.
First of all, something as plain and simple as a seatbelt was forgotten, all concussions and flying off the chair could have been avoided if the number one security measure had been added. The second thing is the emergency kit, the sight of it alone makes you cry, because what do you mean they didn't even bother to put a flashlight in case the sub shut down? The only source of light was the little light from the life jacket and the X-ray screen, not only was it limited, but it also gave Simon radiation poisoning. To summarize; The alcohol? Expired. The tape? Expired. The bandages? Suspicious. Emergency oxygen mask? Not a single thought. Food? Nowhere to be seen. The water? That thing probably had a cocktail of different bacteria because God knows how long that thing was in there. The only saving grace was the fire extinguisher. And most importantly, there wasn't a portable toilet, where the hell was that man going to pee? (The last thing is improbable, but hey, when nature calls you can't hold your bladder)
Let's move on with the behavior of the crew, these people didn't even pretend not to like Simon and want him dead. I get it, he was from Eden, he made his mistakes, has a long body count because the name of "butcher" wasn't earned for nothing and they have beef with him, of course I am not expecting to be roses and daisies. But dude, how do you expect an expedition to go smoothly if you're sabotaging the person in it? For me, it's like shooting yourself in the foot, you won't obtain the info that you want if the man you're sending is not at his full potential and you keep rage-bating him.
Another thing to add is the manual, if I remember correctly, one of the papers had the typical "➖️" thingy, which ok, Simon is a convict and he is not supposed to have access to sensitive information, but at this point on what if that information was crucial to the expedition, uh? To add more, the fact that the crew let Simon in the dark about many things annoyed me to no end. The poor communication to the point of absurdity made my hand itch and tempted me to throw the water bottle at the theater screen. One of the most important pieces of information that nobody seemed to care to share was that the camera was an X-ray, which meant radiation! If somebody had the decency to give a heads-up about what he's dealing with, the entire incident of Simon poisoning the welders could have been avoided. But noooo, let's keep this crucial information from him and gaslight the poor man into thinking it was his fault and him apologizing for it when this issue was caused by them in the first place! They only have themselves to blame.
Then again, this is just my point of view. You could share your point of view as well (just be polite) if you want of course. I love this movie, it's so tragic and bittersweet, if it were on DVD I would already have acquired it and watched it again in the comfort of my home.
