Today is International Mother Language Day
Today is a day to celebrate our native languages. Today is a day to fight the oppression based upon language. Today is a day to honour those who have fallen due to their struggle to speak their mother tongue.
On February 21, 1952, students in Dhaka, Bangladesh, protested against oppression of the Bengali Language. Those students were massacred by the ruling Pakistani police. In honour of that blood-smeared day, we move to encourage linguistic diversity and awareness of linguistic traditions.

Nickname: Lori. Just for family and friends. 😛
Height: 170cm... or that's what my passport says at least, I haven't actually measured my height in a long time.
Last film I saw: I think it was Cinderella (the old 1950 one) with Finnish subtitles because I can't find it with the Finnish dub.
Star sign: Cancer
Favorite musician: I don't really have one, I like lots of different artists and genres.
Song stuck in my head: lately I mostly have music from various Final Fantasy titles in my head. The OSTs of those games never fail to amaze me.
Other blogs: I used to have one for my Final Fantasy XIV character but I deleted it some time ago.
Do I get asks: I never did, but feel free to ask me anything :)
Blogs following: 26. I think I don’t use Tumblr enough to follow many people, but if I become more active the number will rise for sure ^^
What am I wearing: a blue long-sleeved shirt and white pants, nothing fancy
Dream job: I've been thinking about it but I’m never 100% sure what it could be, I’m thinking something that involves social interaction and languages. Nothing specific at the moment
Dream trip: I have several... I’d like to go around the Baltic area, but I also want to go to Croatia and Germany to meet some friends... but for pure leisure I’d love to go to Japan and maybe Taiwan
Instruments I play: I used to play the keyboard when I was younger but forgot everything basically. I do get the urge to play the piano if I ever see one, though!
Languages: I’m a native Italian speaker, have a C1 in English and I know some French, Esperanto and a little German. I’m focusing on learning Finnish at the moment and studying a tiny bit of Japanese on the side.
Favorite food: I just love food in general to be honest! Though, I’m a bit of a sweet tooth so I prefer desserts and sweets over other food 😆
Favorite songs: they always change so I’ll give you 5 I love listening to right now: Little Things by Allie X, Me ei olla enää me by SANNI, 誓い (Chikai) by Utada Hikaru, Косы (Kosy) by Lena Katina and Evelina by Katarina Barruk
Random fact: I’ve reorganized the place I’m currently living in using the KonMari method and I will definitely do the same for my room back home. It’s giving me more motivation to do things and recommend you go through this process as well!
Pretty much everyone I follow has already been tagged/is inactive/is a big acc who posts memes and stuff, so I tag any reader who wishes to do this. You can just say I tagged you :)

Minoritized Languages Songbook Project!
**INTEREST FORM IS AT THE BOTTOM, PLEASE FILL IT OUT IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE OR ELSE THIS WON’T HAPPEN**
VERSIÓ EN CATALÀ / VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL
I had an idea that I posted about on here a couple of weeks ago to make a songbook for minoritized/endangered languages and cultures, and people seemed interested, so I’m making it a thing. Basically, what I want to make is a book of songs in minoritized or endangered languages, with the lyrics translated into English and other languages, both majority and minority. I had envisioned this as a way to create connection between different minoritized languages and cultures, hopefully serving at a point of joint resistance. I grew up with a lot of song books filled with protest songs and music from different cultures, and that’s taught me that music is a powerful tool in fighting those in power, as well as fighting against isolation. Being able to join smaller languages and cultures together into a larger collective could help in the fight to save them from being lost. Also, translating songs is just fun and this would be a chance for people to do translations without English as a medium, as well as a chance to work on something in languages that are often less frequently used in the internet, especially in collaborative projects like this.
The current ideas is to have 1-2 songs for each language/culture (I’m including culture here because some marginalized groups might not have their own language, or the songs might have been written in a major language for other reasons, but if your culture is endangered or minoritized, we want to represent you too). We’ll translate these songs into as many major languages as possible, both in order to make songbooks in those languages, and also so that people who don’t know the original language can have something to go off of when translating into their language. From there, each song will be translated into every language in the project, and it’s important to note that in their final version these are intended to be lyrics that match the rhyme and meter of the original song so that they can be sung. That means that translators can either make a translation directly into lyrics, or translate the actual meaning of the lines without rhymes or meter and let other people (including monolingual speakers!) turn it into lyrics. The end result would ideally be a translation of all of the songs into every language that we have speakers for, so that we can make a version of the book for every language.
The format of the songbook is a spread of a page or two per song, with sheet music and also (hopefully!) an accompanying illustration by an artist from that culture, which means that not only do we need translators and writers, but also musicians who’d want to make arrangements, artists who’d want to draw pictures for their culture’s music, and graphic designers who’d want to make everything look pretty and fit on the page. Even if you don’t speak other languages or don’t think you’re good enough to translate stuff, you can still help out by doing one of these!
In summary, these are the people we’ll need:
bilingual speakers of minoritized languages to help translate to and from their language
bilingual speakers of major languages to help get songs into as many languages as possible
poets/writers or literally anyone who wants to help write the actual lyrics in the individual languages
musicians who want to make arrangements (esp. for piano or guitar)
artists from minoritized/endangered cultures who want to design an illustration to go with a song
graphic designers who want to put everything together into a book
As for the actual book, at the moment it would probably be shared online in PDF form, but if in the future it becomes feasible, we might be able to make actual print copies (that requires money though, so is unlikely to happen). If any of you have ideas for how to get it printed, then maybe we could do something, so tell me if you have thoughts.
In addition, if you’d be interested in helping to run this project, feel free to message me, I’d be glad to have help!
If you are interested in joining the project PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM HERE. We’d be glad to have you, regardless of how many languages you speak or how connected you are to minoritized/endangered languages. All are welcome, and the more people we can get, the better!
(ALSO: Having this post translated into other languages, and also having the form translated into other languages, would make it much more accessible and would be much appreciated, feel free to reblog with a translation or message me if you’d want to translate the form!)
