My grandmother was harassing me about the dangers of online dating, and my grandpa was like, “Oh fer crying out loud, leave her alone. My parents met online, she’ll be fine.” Apparenly my great grandparents were both telegraph operators who would chat over the line in between messages and fell in love and my great grandma moved halfway across the country to marry a dude she met over the telegraph.

No one alive in the family had ever heard this story until like 70+ years later when I happened to start seeing a dude from OK Cupid.

With the news of my school being closed down until the 17th of next month, and countless other schools across the country closed down for even longer, I invite anyone who thinks teachers are not people worth respecting or paying a decent wage to suck my entire ass. Do these get used in the north or high altitudes where there is a lot of snow in winter and excavating and heating them would be a struggle, or just in milder places where schools sprawl out like tiny cities and power-walking from one end of campus to another before the tardy bell is a challenge?

I grew up in MN and we had them at my middle school, but my year ninth grade got moved to the high school, so I never actually had a class in “the pods” and I have no idea how they handled frigid weather or heavy snow. A real mystery now that I think about it…

I taught in one of these for a year. There was one class in each half of the pod (or what we called “mobile” despite its apparent lack of mobility). The mobile has its own heating and AC system and each classroom inside had its own thermostat. Also, administration almost never checks up on you because heaven forbid they leave their own private offices. As a teacher, having your classroom in one of these is pretty nice other than having less square footage.

Staying at my grandparents’ for a couple days. They watch a lot of Fox News.

Holy shit every two seconds they dump on Democrats, left leaning people, millennials, young people, football players??? etc. Like they don’t ever let up. It’s a constant stream of negativity and blame. And it always sounds so genuinely hateful and in disgust it’s like they can’t rub their brain cells together to think that maybe having a civil conversation with one of these people will help them see the other side of an argument. Instead their weapons are derogatory comments and high horses.

Have a conversation. Stop interrupting people. Listen. Don’t be afraid to be wrong sometimes. That’s how we grow. And this isn’t just advice for Fox News celebrities/viewers, but for everyone. Be humble. Take a risk by listening. Reevaluate your own opinions. Be mad about things when they challenge your opinion. But respond in an adult, appropriate manner. Be civil. If you end up being wrong, it’s not a big deal. It’s going to be okay.

Converse, challenge, listen, think, and grow.

Okay not to be a nerd or anything, but in the Math 2 class that I teach, we have a whole unit called “Do Bees Build it Best?” that is all about finding answer to the question of whether or not building hexagonal honeycombs is the most efficient as far as space vs. volume efficiency.

The answer is yes. Bees do build it best.
