Regardless, Saber is the best. That much is obvious.
I’ve said it multiple times before but my favorite theme in Re:Zero is the theme of personal identity, and how that can be molded through how people around you perceive you, and how you perceive those perceptions in turn. What I call “Self-recognition through the other”.
And what I really like about it is that it uses the typical 7 deadly sins (plus the 2 Pope Gregory got rid of) to represent transgressions in that regard; the vice of warping another person’s sense of self in one way or another, ways that can be abusive, that’s the truest sin. Of course, they also get applied in their more literal meanings in the story too, but I wanna talk about how they are framed in regards to this theme specifically
Gluttony is the most obvious, it’s framed as a sin where you “consume” another person’s identity for your own sake, or take it on completely, without regard for them and how they’ll get dulled or lose their own sense of self devoid from you.
Greed is about a desire for connection, which in moderation can be a good thing, but it can also become possessive and entitled. It’s literally objectifying, treating someone else like your possession. On the flip side, placing that desire above all else can also lead to the detriment of your own well-being as well as those around you.
Lust doesn’t just refer to the sexual connotation, but about love in general. Specifically about using love as leverage to take advantage of and manipulate people, even by force, and even down to their sense of self.
Wrath also isn’t just about anger, it’s about intense emotions in general, and what happens when you project these emotions onto other people, and how this can become a cycle of amplifying these emotional projections back and forth until the person’s identity has been consumed by them.
Sloth can be taken as being slothful in your relationships, not just romantic ones but to the people around you. Neglecting or abandoning them when things get hard, especially if they really need you.
Pride seems to be about the arrogant assumption that your perspective of another person is the correct one, and treating them the way that you see fit based on that. You’re in the right, so if you decide they deserve to be punished then it must be justified.
Envy is also about the possession of others, similar to greed but with a much more targeted and controlling nature. The jealousy that comes with it is one that forces the object of desire into being isolated, lonely and unfulfilled, unable to form any true bonds with others.
Melancholy is the one we’ve seen the least of, but it seems to be about forcing your negativity onto others, hurting not just yourself but also other people through your own depression and apathy.
Vainglory is gaslighting. Despite being as mysterious as melancholy, the metaphor is obvious. It’s manipulating another person’s entire perspective and reality to fit your narrative, to manipulate them into what you want them to be.
The theory is that since there's already 4 versions of dona (tomb dona (the Dona who is in the crystal), trial dona (who is believed to now be Omega (the Ryuzu who was Shima), Sphinx (the first Ryuzu copy Dona made, and was given an imperfect soul of her own), and Scarf Dona (Anastasia's spirit). And since Scarfdona, Omega, and Sphinx all act differently despite being "Echidna", and especially since Omega doesn't act anything like Trial Dona, the theory is that Omega is actually Tomb Dona's full bona-fide soul (or another copy) that was being kept much like the Witches in the Trial were. The other part of the theory is that Trial Dona isn't Dona's actual soul, but another imperfect artificial spirit that she created (much like how she created scarfdona) to be a custodian of the trials and the other witch's souls, and because of that, she's twisted much like Sphinx is. (an offshoot theory is that Scarfdona and Trial dona are some sort of split entity, one having her personality, one having her memories).
The point being, the "reason" Betty was kept in the library might have been a bad answer made by Trial Dona because she's a warped artificial spirit. Knowing Dona's true nature from the flashback wn chapters and side stories, she's genuinely helpful, but a bit manipulative (due to her greed authority), and keeping Betty in her library would not be like tomb dona at all. She might have had some curiosity to see how she would react after so long, but how Tomb dona acts, it was probably more of a safety and maturity thing for her daughter. (ya know those dumb social media videos of parents giving their kids candy, leaving the room and telling them they can't eat it until they come back? Same idea. There's curiosity of the parent involved in wondering what your kid will do, but also you want them to have patience as a part of growing up and being mature.) Trial Dona could only see the curiosity part, not the parenting part, so the actions of Tomb dona putting Betty in the library looks warped when explaining it without the second part. The library was the safest place for her while she was going to he gone, and it kept her near her pupil, roswaal.
You could also argue that having Betty stay close would be necessary for her revival, which is more then likely what Roswaal's gospel revolves around. The theory in a nutshell is Tomb dona is just a mom and her warped copy of herself explained stuff in a bad way because she's narrow-minded, but Subaru and Emilia couldn't have known Trial dona wasn't like tomb dona since they've never met her.
YEA THAT WOULD ALL MAKE SENSE... the amount of echidnas that exist is insane i swear i almost forgot all about sphinx, the funniest one for sure is scarfdona/eridna like its literally a scarf possessing anastasia. its so off the rails. i love how subaru just assumes shes a cunt from the getgo bc he hates (trial) echidna so much (justified). poor scarfdona
but the idea that trial dona isnt the "real" one tracks, because thats already what was implied. i sort of assumed that trial dona was a version of echidna thats younger, like, the version of herself she made in the trial looks physically younger and different from how she looks in the tomb, and i assumed her warped mindset was a biproduct of her being based on a less mature version of herself. but it doesnt fully explain everything, like how in her book of the dead she's described as much more virtuous (ironic for a witch of sin) to the point where i wasnt sure it was about her for a while, i thought it was a second one about minerva! theres just so much going on with echidna, but how fitting is that for the witch of greed? she gets FOUR versions of herself lmao
a little detail i always liked in otto’s backstory was that he didnt instantly start crying when his mom hugged him. he looked over to his dad and brothers for a cue on how to react
and THEN he starts crying. not only is it fairly realistic for a little kid, but one in his position specifically- otto has never been understood before, nor has he ever understood anyone.
he says his parents always tried their hardest to understand his abnormality, but anyone born without a divine protection could never really get it. and he could never really get them. and hes right, theyll never be able to see (and in this case, hear) the world in the exact same way he does. but that doesnt mean communicating these feelings is impossible- his older brother went out of his way to find a method of communication that would work for him, and taught him how to read and write himself, even though otto would struggle with this more than any other kid.
hes literally been overstimulated for his entire life, he describes the world as being nothing but hellish noise for his entire childhood. he hears everything so he cant hear anything. he just sits with a blank stare because everything is just too much all the time. but its only when he sees his family cry than he starts to cry too. it was the first time that he cried since he was born.
because this was the first time in his life he was able to communicate in some way, the first time he felt somewhat understood. not just to tell his family his feelings, but to respond to theirs as well. even if he didnt fully grasp the nuance. it wasnt impossible to be seen and heard. and i love that he was so loved by his family too.
and thats his entire theme as a character right there! communication… his character revolves around it; he’s a merchant and the head of public affairs of the emilia camp because of his negotiation skills. he helps subaru out of his rot every single time by talking to him. his divine protection of soul language is literally the ability to communicate. his entire character is about communication. and connection. and love. and how these are all connected
i honestly dont think he would have turned out to be how he is now if it wasnt for the fact that his family was so loving. his divine protection might not have even evolved into something thats actually a gift, if mental state has anything to do with it. without proper help and support his world might still be hellish noise.
you all get what im saying here though, right? his neuro is so divergent.
ALSO i want to highlight this part of the light novel. it was skipped over in the anime, he’s around 8 here. otto didn’t just magically become Good At Talking To People, he was still seen as strange, he still doesnt understand how “regular” people live in the world.
he was able to catch up to and surpass his peers in his communication abilities through fixation, and incredible focus, but he still doesnt actually understand people as a whole. and he doesnt understand how everyone else finds it so easy. he got where he is through studying what to do- something like observing others like he did in the screencaps above.
funny as fuck how in pride:if subaru is like "dude why did you rip this guys limbs off? i didnt tell you to rip his limbs off." and elsa is like "well he would be annoying if he had limbs." and subarus is just like "yeah true. anyway throw him in the fire. im feeling feminist today."
need ppl who havent read pride:if to know that im not exaggerating
#feminismwin
funniest way to interpret roswaal and subaru's post-arc-4 dynamic is that subaru sees him like a father figure that he just fucking hates
no but like on a more serious note roswaal actually does foil subaru's actual parents in a weird way. his whole life subaru was raised with this intense pressure of being Kenichi Natsuki's Son, but all that pressure came from external forces. kenichi and naoko themselves always wanted subaru to be his own person. i could talk forever about the message of the parent and child episode and the ways it drilled this message into subaru's head. his dad and mom both just want him to be subaru.
but to CONTRAST that completely, the rest of the arc subaru is faced with roswaal's manipulation of events, backing him into a corner to force him to be molded into what roswaal wants him to be. roswaal repeatedly tells him "we are the same. you will be like me. you have no choice but to be like me. you are already like me." pretty much the exact opposite of his actual parents- the fear that he always had about them. it was irrational, but in a roundabout way he was still faced with a version of it.
And just as Roswaal is a twisted reflection of Kenichi, so is Echidna a reflection of Naoko. Especially in the Greed:IF. Naoko always stepped back and let Subaru choose his path for himself. On the other hand, Echidna micromanages every tiny detail of Greed!baru's life, down to his death. Naoko is so airhead and honest always wearing her heart on her sleeve. It's *still* impossible for us to tell what Echidna's intentions or feelings about anything are.
Augh, just the two people Subaru thought to ask for help from in arc 4 being twisted reflections of his parents.
YOU SO GET IT YOU COMPLETELY GET IT
and i feel like whats also worth noting in this fucked up family dynamic echidna created is that this makes beatrice the little sister (since echidna really is her mother). which is honestly the silver lining here because subaru and beatrice actually do become like siblings, he really does think of her as his little sister. but whats different is that they CHOSE each other. literally subaru got beatrice to escape by telling her to choose him. theyre literally so cute. icons of escaping fucked up and weird family dynamics being placed upon them and still choosing each other.
Genuinely started ugly crying during the climax because Reina is one of my fave characters ever atp, there’s just something so authentic about her and seeing her struggle with feelings of inadequacy before ultimately fighting alongside Bearcatmon for the win meant EVERYTHING to me. It was so important that it was BOTH of them there, on the front lines, making the difference.
Crying so hard right now, my baby Reina finally got her big ultimate evolution sequence and I’m obsessed with every aspect of it from the animation, to soundtrack, to how cool Bearcatmon’s design looks and how it perfectly reflects Pristimon and Reina personalities.
