I'm currently rereading the cruel prince and I'm catching a lot of interesting stuff I didn't get/stuff I forgot!

CARDAN THOUGHT OF THE COURT OF SHADOWS AS HIS FRIENDS DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE JUST MET THEM 😭😭😭 oh baby...

ALSO, you can't tell me the Roach isn't already sensing the tension between the two of them!!! Like c'mon "oh you're taking him in the back, huh? For what Jude? What are you going to do to him, or with him? 🤔"

I SWEAR his comments are full of implications.

The Bomb telling Jude about how Cardan in a way "stood up for her" behind her back. Convincing them that Jude won't betray them and that she must have a plan. Jude realizing that he's been paying close attention to her and how he's actually pretty smart for figuring a lot of this stuff out.

I feel like when I first read the cruel prince I didn't really think much of those moments but now, going through the story again after having finished it, I'm noticing a lot of cute and interesting moments I wouldn't have thought of as important.

And I'm pretty sure I have more coming!

I force my feet to move across the wilted and blackened grass. ... “Cardan,” I say in a whisper... As if in answer, the serpent draws back, neck curving in a swinging movement as though evaluating how best to strike.  “It’s Jude,” I say, and my voice cracks. “Jude. You like me, remember? You trust me.”  The serpent explodes into motion, sliding fast over the grass in my direction, closing the distance between us. Soldiers scatter. Horses rear up...Kelpies run for the sea. ... But the serpent pauses perhaps ten feet from where I am standing, winding around itself.  Looking at me with those gold-tipped eyes. 

I woke up in the early hours of the morning thinking about this scene, and how Snake Cardan heard Jude whisper his name from thirty feet away (It's canon that he's thirty feet away from her, by Jude's guess when she first sees him in the clearing). At the sound of her voice, he rushes across the distance between them and stops in the security position for snakes. (Snakes winding around themselves aren't positioning to strike. They're moving into a protective position.) What strikes me the most about this scene is that Cardan later tells Jude he only knew "hatred, terror, and the desire to destroy". So much so that he blackened the land and the trees wherever he slithered. So much so that anyone who came near him died.

He was himself, but he wasn't. But even in this stripped down form of himself, the mere sound of her whispering his name draws his attention, and he immediately RUSHES toward her and just...stops to rest in front of her. It's such a deep, primal sense of knowing someone and it makes me go absolutely feral. Even in snake form, he trusted her.

This also somewhat parallels the hedge maze scene in Cruel Prince, although I'm not sure it's intentional, when Cardan is high off his ass but still recognizes Jude by the sound of her cough.

I start coughing immediately. At that moment, Cardan's gaze goes to me. His eyes are barely open, but I can see the shine of them, wet as tar.

We talk a lot about how many small details Cardan notices about Jude's appearance from the get-go, but recognizing the tenor of someone's voice from a COUGH? Hearing their voice from thirty feet away when they're WHISPERING and you're A DAMN SNAKE???? HELP.

here's the good news: you don't know what else you still have to learn about this world.

i've been here for almost three decades. i know a lot of things. i know a lot about nature. it can tell you lots of facts about flowers and trees and creatures. i am lucky to say i have spent a large portion of my life wandering around outside.

i didn't know the fog lifts until today. i thought it was just a saying; like how we say rain "peters out", or that "dawn breaks".

goblin and i were walking in a place called pine alley. these red pines all are old wood; they stretch high up. the path is wide and beautiful. the fog was snuggled against the ground in a warm fur. i was on a call with my brother, talking about a funeral.

i've been jaded recently. certain personal things have been going very badly. i'm stressed beyond the breaking point, because i hit the breaking point about 2 months ago and had to keep going. i recently ran out of room on my to-do list for a single day - and i wasn't even breaking down my tasks neatly.

but the fog lifted.

i'd never seen it do that. i didn't know it could happen so quickly. the curtain, slipping upwards, returning to the sky. my brother kept talking on the other end of the line. i had to interrupt him. holy shit, i said. fog actually lifts.

i've been living in foggy locations my whole life. i love fog. i love the gentle quiet peace that comes with it.

and here, in the trees beside a meadow, i felt the universe wink at me. see, it said, there's things even you keep learning.

I always think about how Jude and Cardan’s marriage vow states that they’ll be married “Until they wish for it to be otherwise” and “the crown has passed from their hands”.

We know the first would never happen. And as for the second, I think this one is really confusing because the first thing that comes to our mind is “Oh they’re only going to rule until Oak takes over, and then their reign ends so their marriage does too (?)”

But I think Holly has worded that very cleverly. In my opinion, the crown in question is THE crown. The Blood Crown. Which Cardan destroyed in QoN. And the Folk of Elfhame had to renew their vows of fealty, not to the crown but to HIM this time. I think this also applies to their marriage in a way. Destruction of the Crown, the Curse and Cardan’s resurrection was a new chance for Jurdan. And unlike their wedding where both didn’t know the intentions of the other person, this second time, they knew they have each other, wholly and without a doubt.

And since the blood crown aka the crown in the vow is destroyed, there’s technically only one way for their marriage to end and that is if they both wish it. Them passing over the crown to their children (manifesting jurdan babies in tsh 🤞🏻) or even Oak would not affect their marriage.
