So, a few years back, my dad and I did a little summer trip where we road tripped from NorCal to Portland, visited several small, family owned bookstores in Portland, then road tripped back. On the way back, we drove through Leggett, Ca. We had woken up at around 3am and started driving back home, 2 hrs later we wanted breakfast and pulled off the freeway to Leggett to find food. Now we are in the middle of nowhere, so when you see a place to pull over for gas or food, you do because it could be another 150 miles before you come across another opportunity. So we pulled off and followed this road for about a mile straight into this tiny town. We slow down as we get closer and notice, you can really only see two buildings, both run down a little, made from wood, kind of old looking, one is a "gas station" (looked like no one had been there for years) and a florist shop, fresh flowers out front, no lights on, so bikes or cars in eyesight, not a single person. We turn right and follow the road a bit. 1 mile of trees and then a small clearing on the left, a nice house, a brand new car, open trunk, open back door, no one in sight. Okay, we'll sit here for a second and when someone comes out, ask if they know where we can get something to eat. 10 minutes later, no sounds from the house, no sign of people. We keep driving and go downhill a little bit, winding through some trees, the road ends in a large clearing with a big two floor building, a diner! Perfect. We pull up, old wood building, broken windows, decorated inside with tables and everything, no people, no people, no cars, no bikes, nothing. At this point, we go, okay this is kind of creepy, lets just get back on the freeway. We go back the way we came, the single road in and out of town. The freeway entrance is about 100ft across from the freeway exit we took to get here. When we got here, 15 minutes ago, there was no construction and no car in sight. The exist is blocked and there are now dozens of cones and signs and there is tape everywhere and a single man working in a large truck, moving things around. We pull up and ask how we can get to the freeway, he points us further down the road and says "there's an entrance a couple miles down, but be careful, that's West Leggett and it's the bad part of town." So what we saw was the good part of town? That's creepy. However when you google Leggett, Ca, it shows images of the same area/paths/roads we were on, but it talks about how it's known for it's large beautiful trees and cute inns/hotels. The pictures are beautiful and full of life. What the fuck. That town was horrifying when we were there.
