hi there! what are the best SW books in your opinion for the luke x mara ship? i'd be interested to read them
Oh hi there!
Well first off you have the Thrawn Trilogy which is the start of everything, where Luke and Mara meet for the first time and where Mara is introduced to the SW universe proper.
After that Mara only appears in a couple of books but sheâs mainly a minor character in them and imo getâs treated poorly. She also barely interacts with Luke apart from a scene in Darksaber where she flirts with an already committed Luke.
Luke pretty much gets in other relationships in those books. And Mara herself gets this âare they sleeping or not togetherâ with Lando. So really cannot recommend those books.
Now the actual recommendation after this is I, Jedi. This book while focused on Corran Horn has a couple of shipping scenes between Luke and Mara. Specially from Mara. Although because of the nature of the book (you need to read the first X-Wing books at least plus the Jedi Academy Trilogy) I leave it to your discretion if you want to read it or not.
Then you finally have the Hand of Thrawn Duology which is a sequel to the original Thrawn Trilogy and also the books where Luke and Mara get together. So definitely recommend.
After that you have Survivorâs Quest a standalone book focused on them after Hand of Thrawn. This books and the previous ones mention are all written by Timothy Zahn, Mara Jadeâs creator.
Later you have the New Jedi Order series. While this series doesnât have Luke and Mara as the main characters. The series is the first to show us Luke/Mara as a married couple and there are many moments between. Special mention to the sixth book Balance Point which is effectively the Luke/Mara book of the series (alongside Han/Leia).
After that you have the Dark Nest Trilogy but I do not recommend them. What they do to the characters is imo not great.
And finally Legacy of the Force which you should avoid at all cost since this is the series where Mara Jade is fridged.
Bonus:
The Star Wars Union Comic Book, which is about Luke/Maraâs wedding
Not Luke/Mara together but I would definitely recommend them as well, Allegiance and Choices of One which are two books shortly after Episode 4 with a Farmboy Luke Skywalker and Emperorâs Hand Mara Jade.
And thatâs it. Honestly there are not that many stories with them because Luke got constantly paired off with other people and Mara reduced to a one dimensional side character.
we need a new trope name for whatever happened with deathbit because it was not Came Back Wrong. he came back and immediately proposed to the love of his life and offered her immortality so they could be together forever, made her a fancy romantic dinner and threw a sick ass goth wedding. he never hurt rogue or yelled at her or was mean to her at all. like what do we call that. Came Back Horny
Katara rises with the moon, which means that, often, the part of the day she looks forward to the most is laying in bed after the sun has gone down, just watching Zuko sleep.
Sometimes she'll see him shift in the bed, reaching for something she cannot see, his lips parted in a silent cry, his fingers outstretched to try and absorb the lighting that he still sees behind his eyelids, coming for her.
Gently, Katara curls her fingers around his outstretched hand, and lays it down on the pillow between them, stroking the fingers until he calms down.
In which Katara has some doubts regarding marrying Aang, runs away to the Fire Nation and has a talk with an old friend.Â

and whatâs the point in hiding? everybody knows we got unfinished business.Â
Itâs been so long, she doesnât even know what to expect.Â
The Fire Nation is still the same, of course. The trees are green, the wind is warm, the sun shines, the sea is blue and everyone is nice to her. They remember who she is. What she did to save their current Firelord. Back during the war, and some time after, she used to feel like an outsider in these streets, but that wasn't the case anymore. Everywhere is a little bit of her home, now.Â
She couldnât bring herself to steal Appa away from Aang, so it took her a while to get there. At this point, everyone must know of her disappearance and theyâre probably looking for her right now as she walks towards the royal summer house of Ember Island.Â
In the first few years after the war, they would all meet at this exact place, and reminisce about the times they were hiding, preparing for the possible end of the world. She was with Aang, back then already. He chose her, so why would she be with anyone else?Â
The late nights and early mornings, though, she would spend with her best friend.Â
She missed him so much, she felt like being torn apart every time they had to part ways. But that was normal, wasnât it? They had spent so much time together, just trying to survive. Then he jumped in front of the lightning for her. She had nursed him back to health for days after that.Â
âZuko,â she mutters in disbelief as she steps inside the house, and finds him waiting for her, sitting in lotus position, eyes closed, in the middle of the front hall.Â
âKatara,â he mutters back, eyes still closed, a small smile curling his lips.
He wasn't wearing his usual royal regalia, but instead some informal robes she only remembered seeing him in during the war, and while his long black hair was still in a topknot, there was no crown.Â
âWhat are- How did- Why-â she stutters, confused, as she looks around for any of their friends as if she just walked into a trap.Â
Zuko chuckles quietly and opens his eyes.Â
âItâs just me.â he explains âSokka sent a letter the same day you vanished. Aang was in Caldera a few hours ago, but he left and I⊠Thought I should wait for you here.â
Katara assumes a defensive stance, crossing her arms.
âHow did you know?â she asks, discontent.Â
âI know you,â he shrugs.Â
âZukoâŠâÂ
âIt really isnât like you to run away, though.â He shakes his head, frowning as if faced with a puzzle he couldnât make sense of. âI was kind of expecting that from Aang, you know, as usual. But you⊠You always face things, Kat. What happened?âÂ
It all comes down on her at once.Â
She ran away. She actually left her home in the South Pole, mere weeks before her wedding and for what? She didnât even have an answer for that. She just needed to leave, to get away, and when she realized what sheâd done, she was miles away from her Tribe already. So she came to the only other place she felt the safest in the entire world â the place where everything changed.Â
Zuko got up from his place on the floor and went to her, slowly putting his arms around her and pulling her towards him. Only then, she realizes sheâs crying. Sobbing, body shaking and all. Spirits, what a pathetic sight she must be right now.Â
âItâs alright,â Zuko whispers against the crown of her head, petting her back a little awkwardly âItâs ok. Iâm here. Youâre ok.âÂ
It takes a few moments, but she finally stops crying and they let go of each other. Without saying a word, they go back outside, towards the beach, and Zuko lets her make herself comfortable on the sand before joining her. Even though heâs curious, he doesnât ask again, and for that she is grateful.
Katara, stares at her hands, resting on her beaten down bluish-grey robes, and takes a long, deep breath.Â
âI donât want to marry Aang.â she finally says.Â
Itâs the first time she recognizes it as the truth, and itâs out in the world now. She canât take back â she doesnât want to.Â
âOh.â That's all Zuko says in return.Â
âI love him,â she clarifies âBut not⊠Iâm not⊠I was never in love with him. I thought I could eventually fall for him, all these years, and it would all be worth it. But⊠I canât do it.âÂ
Zuko stays silent, and she doesnât need to look at him to know that heâs frowning once again, staring at the sea instead of her, for which, once more, she is grateful.Â
âWhat would be worth it?â he asks.Â
Itâs not what sheâs expecting him to ask, and it makes her turn to him for a second. Thereâs that look in his eyes, still trying to put the pieces together, and she sighs.Â
âYou know, being a wife. The Avatarâs wife. Thatâs what theyâre calling me already, did you know? Everywhere we go.â She shakes her head. âI used to be Master Katara of the Southern Water Tribe. I liked being Master Katara.âÂ
âYouâre still Master Katara,â Zuko tells her âYouâre always going to be. People know that. Aang knows that, too.â
âAang doesnât get it,â she mutters, quieter âHeâs too obsessed with keeping his culture alive, he doesnât care about mine.âÂ
âHe does, Katara.âÂ
âHe doesnât.â she shakes her head âMaybe he thinks he does, and he tries his best, but deep down⊠It has always been about keeping the Air Nomads alive. Bringing them back.â
Zuko doesnât try to say anything else, or defend his friend again, which is probably for the best. Katara didnât come all the way here to fight with him, too. She takes a deep breath before speaking again.Â
âIâm not even sure if I want to be a mother, either. Not so soon, at least.â she laughs bitterly âEverybody expects that from me. But I⊠Iâve been acting like a mother since we were kids. I never got to see what the world could be like⊠What life could be like without everything tying me down.â
There's silence after that. Silence with Zuko was usually comfortable. They knew each other well and neither felt the need to say things to fill said silence. This one, however, was different. Like there were many things they should be saying, but neither of them had the courage to do it.Â
âSoâŠâ Zuko clears his throat âYou donât want to marry Aang. You donât want to be a wife, or a mother. Thatâs ok. What do you want, then?âÂ
She looks at him, taken aback by the question.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âWhat do you want?â Zuko repeats.
Katara realizes, at that moment, nobody had asked her that question in a very long time. And so, she isn't quite sure.Â
âI don't know,â she mutters âI⊠Never had dreams of my own. Ever since we found Aang, everything was about what the world needed. And then we won, and everything was about him and what he needed. Or wanted. Whatever.âÂ
Zuko chuckles, surprising her.Â
âDo you remember Ba Sing Se?â he pulls one leg to his chest and rests his chin on his knee, looking deep in thought âDuring the war. Before I joined you. My uncle asked me something, once. He saidâŠâÂ
He takes a deep breath before speaking again.
âWho are you? And what do you want?âÂ
His voice sounds a little like Iroh, then, wise with age, and Katara finds a small smile curling on his face.
âThose are big questions.â she whispers.
âHe said that, too.â Zuko nods at her, smiling shyly âAnd for a while, I⊠I didn't know what he meant. But I found my way, my destiny. And if I can do it, so can you.âÂ
Her smile grows.Â
It's funny, considering how they started, but she trusts Zuko more than she trusts herself, and if he can believe in her so easily like that, why wouldn't she?Â
âAre you going to tell him?â she asks. âAang. Are you going to tell him that you found me?âÂ
âDo you want me to?â his one good eyebrow shoots up.
Katara thinks for a second, then grimaces.
âIf you feel like you need to tell himâŠâ
âI won't tell him if you don't want me to,â he guarantees. âBut, for the record, I think you should.âÂ
âHow do I do that?â she sighs. âHow can I look him in the eye after running away from him? How can I just break his heart?â
âKatara,â Zuko puts one hand on her shoulder âI know you love Aang. We all do. But do you know who the most important person in your life is?âÂ
You.
She shakes her head.
âWho? Sokka? Gran-gran? Oh, I know! Toph.âÂ
Zuko rolls his eyes.
âNo, silly. It's you.â He gives her shoulder a gentle squeeze âYou're the only one who's gonna be there with you for the rest of your life. That's your priority. That's who you should love the most.âÂ
âIâŠâ
âYou can choose yourself now, Katara,â he tells her more softly. âIt's only fair.âÂ
She doesn't know if it's true. Zuko wouldn't intentionally lie to her, not currently, and she knows that, but he can be wrong. What if she does choose herself, but then she loses everything else? Aangâs friendship, Sokka's support, and her tribe. What if she goes too far trying to find herself that she loses all of them?Â
She takes a deep breath once more.Â
âHow's the Fire Nation doing?â she suddenly asks âSorry, I was so wrapped up in this whole thing I forgot to ask.âÂ
Zuko laughs, free and genuine.
âWell, it's been⊠Kind of tiring, honestly.â he sighs. âMai left, if you remember. And I don't have an heir, so they're pressuring me to remarry as soon as possible, which I don't want to, obviously.âÂ
âObviously.â she laughs, a little awkwardly.
âBut other than thatâŠâ he scratches the back of his neck, purposely not looking her in the eye âItâs been good. People like me, somehow, and the assassination attempts slowed down. Things are good.âÂ
âThat's nice.âÂ
They sit in silence again after that, and this time itâs comfortable. Katara can't stop herself from resting her head on his shoulder, and he doesn't stop himself from hugging her as they stare at the sea. They stay like this till it's dark, and Zuko finally moves away.
He stands up.
âYou can have your old room, by the way.â he smiles âI got it ready for you.âÂ
âYou did?â she blinks, surprised.
âOf course I did,â he shrugs âIt's you.âÂ
Katara smiles as bright as the sun, and stands up too. She opens her mouth to thank him, but something else comes out instead.
âWill you wait for me?â she asks in a small voice âWhile I'm looking⊠Searching for myself. Will you wait for me?âÂ
Zuko looks at her, and she can already see the answer in his eyes. He doesn't have to say anything else, and maybe he knows that, because he doesn't. He just nods.
Then he steps in her direction, cupping her face gently with a calloused hand.
âKatara, IâŠâ Zuko starts.
She cuts him off.Â
âI know.â she nods âI have known since back then.âÂ
His breath comes out short, and he nods at her too.
âThen, do youâŠ?âÂ
Katara feels her heart so full it could explode, right then and there. She nods one more time, and smiles as tears prick in her eyes.
âI do.â she whispers âI do.âÂ
They don't need to say it. They don't need to act on it yet. Deep in her soul, she knows there's no one else for her in the whole world. And she knows, somehow, there's never going to be anyone else for him, either. So she smiles brightly at him and goes to her room.
Everything changed after all these years. The war, the pain, the love and the losses. Katara and Zuko, and everything between them, changed as well. But, in a way, they were still the same.Â
She hadn't expected that. And she couldn't be happier.Â

My Theory On Why Deathbit Isn't As Evil In X-Men '97 As He Is In The Comics
I've been seeing comments online from people expressing surprise that Gambit as Death (Deathbit) wasn't as aggressive in the X-Men '97 show as he was in the comics.
Initially, I was surprised too.
But after thinking about it, I kind of understand why Marvel/Disney made the decision to not have Deathbit behave as he did in the comics.
We live in strange times. It's no secret that men and women are having great difficulty finding a romantic partner nowadays, and some of the reasons for that are the rise of the manosphere and the prevalence of redpill ideology in the modern dating scene.
We saw it rear its ugly head in the immediate aftermath of S1, Ep. 5 of X-Men '97. Some people in the fandom were furious with Rogue for briefly choosing Magneto over Gambit and wanted to see her punished for it. It was truly disturbing how enraged people were by Rogue's behavior to the point where they wanted to see her suffer at the hands of Gambit. They wanted revenge and were hoping she'd get her ass handed to her by Deathbit. As for Magneto, they wanted him murdered outright by Deathbit.
While I normally would prefer the story to align more with the comics, in this particular case, I think Marvel made the right call to not adhere to the original depiction of Deathbit. I think the writers of X-Men '97 noticed, as I did, that there is a certain subset of people in the fandom who are not mature enough to understand the complexities of relationships between two human beings. And the answers are not always black and white.
Furthermore, I don't want Gambit to become a mascot for the manosphere. If X-Men '97 had shown Gambit choking Rogue as he did in the comics, I think it would only encourage people who already have misogynistic beliefs. It disturbed me deeply how often I saw people say they wanted Gambit to not take back Rogue and that she needed to learn a lesson. I don't want men to watch X-Men '97 and think that the appropriate way to respond to a woman rejecting him is violence.
