Eye Exercises to Reduce Eye Strain
Mobility for Your Eye Muscles
Before we go over the eye exercises, let’s take a look at some eye anatomy first so you can get a better picture of how they can impact your eyesight and the movement of your body.
The muscles that surround the outside of your eyes allow you to move them in all directions and even rotate a little bit in your eye sockets. Just like the muscles that allow us to move our arms and legs, these muscles need to be exposed to full ranges of motion to help maintain their health. Without eye movements, these muscles can get stiff too! And if they’re stiff, they also might be contributing to the lack of circulation in the eye and pulling on your eyeballs, and, therefore, changing their shape.
Could this be a cause of astigmatism and other eye dysfunctions?
Also, we have little muscles that surround the lenses of our eyes called ciliary muscles. When we look at something in our near field of vision, these muscles contract to allow the eye lenses to take on a more rounded shape so we can focus on the object. This process is called accommodation.
If you look at a computer or use your smartphone for extended periods during the day, you may be causing chronic eye strain on these muscles. Can you imagine holding heavy weights in your hands with a tight grip all day, every day? Eventually, they’ll give up and breakdown.
Could the same thing be happening to people that need stronger and stronger prescription eyeglasses?
Seeing Relief From Eye Strain
Drop everything right now. Don’t even watch my eye exercise video yet.
Eye Exercise 1:
Go outside and look at the most distant tree or object that you can find preferably well above the horizon. Keep a soft focus on it and take 10 deep breaths. That’s all you need.
Eye Exercise 2:
If for some reason you want to deny yourself the great outdoors, you can just close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths.
Then you’ll want to move your eyes in all directions in a slow controlled fashion. You might notice that the movement is a little jerky (saccadic). That’s ok. Just do your best to move your eyes in smooth circles. Also, you might notice that your head will want to follow where your eyes move. Allow that to happen. (See below for more detailed instruction.)
Eye Exercise 3:
Close your eyes. Take the heels of both hands and place them just above your cheekbones and cover your eyes. You’ll want to apply very gentle pressure by just touching your eyelids with the palms of your hands. Hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
Here’s something important to remember. Wherever your eyes move, your head and body will tend to follow. This is a super ninja tip to remember if you want to be able to carry and move your body well. If you want good posture while you sit or stand or walk, look at something that will allow your body to be more upright and balanced (don’t look down). If you want to do a back tuck (back flip), look up to throw your body upward, spot the ground, then continue looking “upward” to get your body upright during the landing.

Level of challenge:
Easy to moderate
Benefits:
Helps reduce eye strain

Look to your left and let your head turn to the left as well
Hold this position for 5 seconds taking deep breaths the whole time
