Cable: Many voices. It's the background chatter of life, regardless of who it's coming from. People talking, laughing, spending time together without an ounce of fear lingering in the background. Stryfe: The voices of his mother and father. He'd spent years wanting family, now he has it and nothing is more peaceful than a little family time.

What’s a truth about themselves they refuse to admit ?

Cable: That sometimes he steps over the line of 'necessary evil' and does straight up awful things, he always justifies it as being for the greater good - but when do you draw the line? When is that cost too great? Stryfe: Despite how far he's come with everything else, he can't accept that he's Cable's clone and not the other way around.

What does “home” mean to them ?

They both share this one. Xavier's mansion, with their parents and the X-Men, even if it's training for missions or facing some kind of disaster - both of them call it home now. They have people they love, and not just their family, that they want to spend time with.

Man, the way my boy Orion has changed over time is crazy to me.

We got the cherub looking little guy, who was being punished for showing weakness and encouraged to be destructive, including setting tutors on fire with his brain because they were 'boring'. Zero value for life, trying to feel powerful by using that power over others, because he had none when facing Apocalypse.

Bitch supreme. Taking over Apocalypse's stead, doesn't know how to lead, brat with no respect for anything or anyone. Immature, takes nothing seriously because it's all just a game when you think it's inevitable you'll win.

Except he loses. And keeps losing. Growing more and more desperate to cling to his purpose, to what he was meant to be, while clan Chosen take everything from him. Food grows scarce, as do his forces, suddenly he's forced to fight for any sense of control lest he lose the legacy he suffered so much to have. He has to win, he MUST, because if he doesn't then it proves that Apocalypse was indeed right in those final moments - he was never worthy.

Now here he is, dragged back to be with his family after losing everything. He doesn't know how to be a person anymore, not really. Underneath the armor he's somewhat gaunt, but that's improving. Love and care are alien to him, accepting them still feels like weakness but now he has a new legacy to follow. He won't fail this time.

-- ❝All it would succeed in doing is earning my discomfort, so that is unlikely.❞ Orion mutters bluntly, eyes narrowing behind his helmet, as if half expecting that line to be crossed regardless. There are few people he tolerates even the briefest physical contact with, Jean and Scott being two of them, and his older self being the last. As it stands he's yet to even be around his parents without his helmet, that serves as a barrier of its own, but he can tolerate a hand upon an armored shoulder or other such small signs of affection- shielded from the sensation though he may be.

Teenage phase aside, I think someone needs to call Nate out for being such a lil shit. Be nicer to your family.

-- ❝Yeah, well you'll all get it when he's tearing things apart and threatening to skin everyone you love because he's having a temper tantrum.❞ Nate mutters sharply, back against the wall and arms folded tightly across his chest, a sharp scowl on his features. He can't believe that HE is being made to look like the bad guy of all things, what kind of upside-down shit- Maybe he should expect it, Cable seems pretty used to having to do the dirty work, even if no one thanks him for it. -- ❝It's like it means NOTHING to everyone that he's killed HOW MANY people? My friends. People I cared about. Both of those assholes- the older one included.❞ Jaw gritting so hard it feels like teeth might crack under the pressure, he suddenly pulls from the wall, hands tucking in his pockets as he turns to leave. ❝But by all means, welcome them both in to live with everyone- all one big happy family, gathered in one easy-to-kill place. Convenient.❞

It takes a little too much effort for Magnus to contain himself with that blunt retort. He hides the amusement behind his mug, subtly clears his throat to dispel it before he puts it back down. That's… something they ought to address properly at some later date. That's not the important thing right now. As made blatantly evident by the young man's unconcealed distaste. Do better.

It's easier to do better when the boy's attitude seems to sour so quickly. As if it wasn't already apparent, this does seem to be weighing quite heavily on the boy's mind. His brow furrows a little; he'll admit, he hasn't been paying explicit attention to any particular individual of Scott's brood to draw a confident conclusion, but… nobody else would likely know the extent of the boy's crimes. Who's….

"Don't start that. You're allowed to be unhappy with your treatment while still acknowledging that they have a right to their feelings; one person's feelings does not negate another's. There's a point where self-awareness becomes nothing more than self-flagellation, and that is where it all falls down. As you said, 'damned if you do, damned if we do not'—when does bitterness become the very reason you return to the old? 'Nobody accepts me at my best, nobody accepts me at my worst—the intended outcome is clearly outside my reach, why should I keep killing myself trying to reach it?'" It's not an unfamiliar thought process.

He sets his mug aside, opting to fold his hands instead as he levels his gaze towards the boy, leans forward just enough to keep him firmly held in that gaze.

"You care so little for humans, but refuse to show the same indifference towards the people who criticize your humanity. My young friend, you do this because you are doing it for you. Not for them. People will have opinions, and people will want to see you fail for the sake of their own validation—but there are just as many that will want to see you succeed. They're the ones who matter. But supported or not, good, bad, or otherwise, if you are as genuine as you say you are, then you need to come to the conclusion that this is for nobody but you. That's the difference between genuine change and performative nonsense. It takes time, your patience will often be tried by those who want you to fail, but as they say, nothing worth doing is ever easy, is it?"

Tension racks up in Orion's shoulders as Magnus lightly scolds that thought process, and though his head doesn't move, his gaze within the helmet flits down to look down to his lap. Reaching out, he delicately places the cookie back onto the plate, given how serious the conversation has become it feels out of place to simply nibble as if it's something more casual. Disrespectful, almost.

Exhaling hard through his nose, he takes just a moment to work through his thoughts, attention returning to Magnus and lips still pressed into that tight frown before he finally offers a reply. ❝You are right, he will never come to believe in my redemption and were I foolish enough to let my satisfaction to hinge on such a thing then I will know no sense of accomplishment. It is his want to sabotage my efforts that continue to be a thorn in my side..❞ As for the matter of fighting for himself, for genuine change, he finds himself torn on whether to speak - for his view of it is very different.

It is my patience, my capacity for restraint.❞ Moving a hand, he raises it between them - ever the dramatic creature that he is, and turns it palm up, fingers curled like claws. ❝I was made to be a weapon. Destruction is second nature to me, taught from the moment I knew how to walk, even before I had the power I do now.❞ That hand pulls back, once again returning to his cape, the fabric bunched up in his lap and both hands twisting into it without thought. -- ❝…I do not wish to fail them.
