From Perth’s heat ☀️to Lahore’s cold 🥶. It’s winter in Lahore, Pakistan. Temperature has dropped to 6 deg.C and forecast for coming days is as low as 4 deg.C. It could also go to zero in winters but that’s rare. Minimum recorded temperature in last decade is -2 deg.C but never snows here. Usually, in the months of Dec and Jan, fog can form from evening to morning getting denser at night reducing visibility to few metres only. Yet, it seem romantic 🙂. The Light Trail at Perth CBD has become a signature event for City of Perth lately. This years’ light trail opened to public on 18th Nov 22 and would be running till start of new year 2nd Jan 23. It’s a free event, with several lighting installations and roving performers across CBD, starting from 6pm to 3am. This years’ theme is Australian animals and of course, Christmas. To facilitate people to enjoy the trail, during the event period, City of Perth is offering free parking at CPP at all carparks after 6pm in CBD. Also, there's three-hour free parking on weekends and public holidays at CPP Cultural Centre, Pier Street and His Majesty’s. City of Perth experimented this three-hour free parking last year and haven't stopped it yet. Few weeks ago, we camped for couple of nights at Big4 Holiday Park Ledge Point WA, just to relax and unwind. The holiday park is at ~1.5 hrs drive north of Perth in the small town of Ledge Point. There's a nearby lookout providing bird eye view of the town, a golf course and the beach. Northam, a rustic town in Western Australia, is the largest inland town in the state that is not founded on mining. A one day trip to this town during spring when canola fields are on full bloom would be worth it. You can also do Dorntj Koorliny Track along Avon River in the town. It's an easy 2.5km loop suitable for whole family. It starts from Bernard Park that has kids play area, BBQ pits, picnic tables, toilets, gazebo and sculptures adding beauty to the park. For curios, Dorntj Koorliny means "Walking Together" in the local language. After crossing the Suspension Bridge that's one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Australia, you can continue walking along the river and come back to Bernard park. Unlike black swans of Perth, white swans are unique to Northam and you can see them on the river. Though, for us, black swans are unique :). Yesterday, we did all three trails (except short portion of Possum trail) in Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary in Avon Valley, Western Australia. Hiked 13km with a total elevation gain of ~550m. Paruna Sanctuary is a private property covering an area of around 1950 hectares and home of several species of flora and fauna including some endangered animals. The sanctuary is fenced to limit the access of feral predators (fox, cats etc) from adjacent farmland to save the endangered species. During our trip, we saw Kangaroos only. Weren't able to catch the glimpse of other animals. There are three trails in Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary: - Possum Loop, ~2.5 km, grade 2, allow 1-2 hrs - Quenda Circuit, ~6.5 km, grade 3, allow 3-4 hrs - Numbat Track, ~12.5 km, grade 3~4, allow 6~8 hrs The sanctuary is seasonal for tracking, from early May to end of October. In this post, all photos are of Possum and Quenda trails. I will post Numbat Track separately. There's $10 entry fee for the sanctuary. Booking must be done online at least an hour before the walk to obtain the code to use at the turnstile at the sanctuary entry. Toilets are near entry gate but inside fenced area. Plenty of parking for 2WD or 4WD, with separate overflow parking suitable for 4WD only. This year's Winter Lights Festival is happening now at Brookfield Place Perth, WA. The event theme is neon lights. There are also roving performers, live music and an artisan market - a new addition in 2022 winter festival. It's a free event and would be showing displays every night from 6pm to 11pm, from 24th August to 3rd September. Well, it was kind of an unprepared excursion to Serpentine National Park in winters. Didn't look at the weather app. Neither brought rain coats nor umbrellas. So, instead of heading back to home or waiting in the car, came up with an idea to make a temporary cover for us while waiting for rain showers to pass as there weren't any sheds or gazebos in the park. It looks flimsy but it worked :). And the best part, we enjoyed both our food and rain from the back of our vehicles. About Serpentine NP, it's one of the locations around Perth where you can get close to wild wallabies or roos. Serpentine falls is a major attraction of the park. Facilities at NP include toilets, BBQ, picnic tables and parking. National Park Falls Walk is an easy Class-2 walk in John Forrest National Park, Western Australia. Starting and ending at picnic area in NP, it's ~2.5 km loop and can easily be done in an hour. Most of the trail is gravel with few steps of stair near the water fall. II would say it's suitable for kids of almost all ages. $15 per car national park fee applies. The picnic area has many BBQ plates. On a pleasant sunny day in winters, it gets full quickly in the morning and finding a parking space may take some time. There's also a small play area near the trail start. Piney Lakes Sensory Play Park in Piney Lakes Reserve is an inclusive park where children of all abilities can play. It's a nice spot for a picnic with seating around the lake, sand and water play areas for little ones, swings, seesaw and several other rides. Few weeks back, we had a families Eid get together at this park. To make it special, parents arranged gifts for their children. (Eid-ul-fitr is a Muslim festival that marks the end of the month of Ramadan. Muslims fast during this month.) Be advised that people bring their dogs in the reserve but they keep them in open, well away from the play area. So, kids can play freely in the park. Last Saturday, we did a day trip to Stirling Ranges WA to hike the second highest peak in the ranges - Mt Toolbrunup (1052m from sea level). We have already climbed Bluff Knoll couple of years back that's the highest peak in SW WA (1095m from sea level). While Mt Toolbrunup is slightly shorter than Bluff Knoll but it's way tougher. Mt Toolbrunup is grade 5 hike, with 562m elevation gain from starting point in ~1.9km one way stretch. It starts as gravel trail in woodland and soon after, it changes to loose rocky path. That's almost 30% of total length and relatively easy. The rest 70% of the hike is really challenging. There's also a warning sign at this place to go forward only if you are fit and agile. The trail from here rises steeply over large boulders and scree, requiring good physical effort and use of hands too (crab walk) at times to climb up. Regardless of its difficulty, the views at the top are breathtaking. It's worth it. There's not much flat surface on summit, so you would have to stand on large rocks. WA National Park fee ($15 per car) applies. The NP fee station is near bluff knoll that’s a but out of the way. Better to pre-purchase NP pass. If you are RAC member, you can buy them at 50% discount. A short ~4km gravel road leads to parking / starting point of this hike from the carpeted Chester Pass Rd. Even 2WD can reach to base of the Mt. A free event is happening on coming Monday 6th June 2022 at Burswood Park Perth to celebrate this year's WA day. The event will kick start at 12 noon and would end at 9.30pm with plenty of free rides for kids, live stage performances, food trucks and a drone show. This photo album is of last years' WA day 2021 that was also at Burswood park, just to give an indication what to expect at the event. WA Day takes place on the first Monday in June each year. It's a day to celebrate all Western Australians who have made, and continue to make, Western Australia their home. Prior to 2012, it was known as Foundation Day, to mark the day when the first European settlers arrived from Britain to settle the Swan River Colony. In April 2012, it was changed to Western Australia Day. "Western Australian of the Year" awards are also given during this period, on Friday night, in seven categories Aboriginal, Arts & Culture, Business, Community, Professions, Sport and Youth.
