The thing people don't realize about Luffy is that he don't actually care that much about the one piece. Like yeah he need it to be the king of the pirates but THAT'S IT. Being king of the pirate is important to him just because it means being the freest person out there.

Luffy doesn't want to rule the seas or anything, he just want to be free and to accomplish his dream which we don't know yet (even if i have my personnal theory hehe).

That's why he hesitated when Chopper asked him if he would rather chase beatles over the one piece, because the treasure isn't that important, what really is, is the freedom that the status of pirate king bring to the one who possess it. And again as Luffy said, according to him being pirate king just mean being the freest person on the planet, which would allow him to accomplish his true dream.

We could go even further and say that he wouldn't necesseraly need to have this status to be the freest (COUGH COUGH GEAR 5...) and that the fact that he hesitated between bugs and the one piece proove that there is a part of him thinking he wouldn't need it to accomplish his dream but i don't wanna drag this longer than it already is.

ANYWAY Luffy is a cutie patootie and a terrifying mf, and we love him for that, ty for reading me have a nice day blablabla...
