2 Jews shot with BB guns in Orthodox section of New York City

Police investigating attacks as possible anti-Semitic crimes

Two Jews were shot with BB guns in a heavily Orthodox neighborhood of New York City.

City Councilman Rory Lancman said that the victims, neither of whom was seriously injured, were shot over the past 10 days in the Kew Gardens Hills section of Queens, the Queens Chronicle reported Monday.

The New York Police Department is investigating the incidents as potential anti-Semitic hate crimes.

A spokeswoman for Lancman told the paper that the first incident was approximately 10 days ago, but she was not sure of the precise date. The second incident occurred on Friday.

Both victims were wearing clothing traditionally worn by Orthodox Jews. The gender of the first victim was not specified, but the second one was male.

New York State Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz issued a statement saying, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the recent incident that betrays an unfortunate prejudice alive in our neighborhood. We live in a community that should celebrate and be proud of our diversity. Acts of bigotry will not be tolerated or go unpunished. I am confident that all perpetrators will be brought to justice, ending a recent string of shameful crimes.”

Queens, one of New York City’s five boroughs, is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States. Kew Gardens Hills, which is home to Lander College for Men and various yeshivas, has a large haredi Orthodox population.

one thing that really bugs me is the stereotype that all people with ocd are organized and have perfectly clean houses 

like while that may be true in some cases, it can be quite the opposite for other people. 

like for example, hoarding is connected with ocd. but a lot of people brush off hoarders as being lazy or gross because they dont fit that clean freak stereotype everyone associates with ocd 

and when my ocd was really severe, i would avoid cleaning as much as possible because i didn’t want to deal with being triggered. cleaning meant touching contaminated things, touching contaminated things meant intrusive thoughts, and so on. honestly even today when my ocd is less focused on contamination, i still dread changing the litter box or taking out the garbage for those exact reasons 

and then there’s people with ocd who don’t have any worries about contamination whatsoever. im willing to bet a lot of these people go undiagnosed or aren’t always taken seriously 

basically the whole stereotype that ocd = neat freak is extremely harmful. yes, some of us fit that stereotype, but it does not define ocd, and that idea is actively hurting people

This is why I didn’t think I had OCD for a long time, so I really hate this stereotype too. Co-morbidity can make it so your disorders don’t really look like the stereotypical disease and make you doubt you even have it. 

My OCD is relatively mild and my primary mental health issue is depression and anxiety. My depression makes it basically impossible for me to keep things clean so I always assumed there was no way I could have OCD because my room was so messy.

Yes! My ocd manifests most in compulsive behaviors (like repetitive movements or actions, and keeping a certain number of items in each of my pockets) that I use to 'control' what goes on in the world around me, so not related to cleanliness at all. And some of my most persistent intrusive thoughts involve drowning, so I sometimes will avoid showering or bathing for long bouts of time... And the ocd combined with anxiety and executive dysfunction means that I can't clean up after myself even if I want to sometimes.

I was giving some lectures in Germany about the death penalty. It was fascinating because one of the scholars stood up after the presentation and said, ‘Well you know it’s deeply troubling to hear what you’re talking about.’ He said, ‘We don’t have the death penalty in Germany. And of course, we can never have the death penalty in Germany.’ And the room got very quiet, and this woman said, ‘There’s no way, with our history, we could ever engage in the systematic killing of human beings. It would be unconscionable for us to, in an intentional and deliberate way, set about executing people.’ And I thought about that. What would it feel like to be living in a world where the nation state of Germany was executing people, especially if they were disproportionately Jewish? I couldn’t bear it. It would be unconscionable. And yet, in this country, in the states of the Old South, we execute people - where you’re 11 times more likely to get the death penalty if the victim is white than if the victim is black, 22 times more likely to get it if the defendant is black and the victim is white - in the very states where there are buried in the ground the bodies of people who were lynched. And yet, there is this disconnect.
