Ok, so I need to rant about something because I just feel the need to. First of all, I don’t want to offend anyone, if you feel that way I’m sorry.
So I have worked in retail for almost 4 years, most of it in store and clearly I am not from the states. I have indeed heard how customers tend to react and treat employees and I know from my past experience how it is but look, in my country customers don’t react that bad.
Due to what’s going on I had to change jobs and ended up working in customer support for an online store based in the States. Tbh, I’m a really anxious person, I hate talking over the phone even with my family and friends, so this was really hard for me to do, but you know, with everything that’s happening I couldn’t pass it and I am really glad that I do have a job.
But let me tell you that after less than 2 months I feel that customers really feel too entitled. Like they add the wrong shipping address and blame it on us, when it’s their first order so of course you’re the one who typed the incorrect one. Like how can the website know where you have previously lived? But of course you have to apologise and say that yes, it may have been an error on our end cause you can’t tell them they’re that stupid and can’t write down an address correct. Or when they know they need something for a specific date which is... don’t know, next Friday and they place the order in Saturday with the cheapest method of shipping that states it can take up to 7 business days and orders are only shipped during said business days and all of a sudden it’s your fault and they keep yelling at you. Like ok, you’re upset, I understand that, but don’t yell at a person (and here I’m referring to ALL people who’re working in customer service/support, not only me) because you wanted it to be cheap. You were informed beforehand. Or when they don’t actually see that an item is pre-order, even tho it clearly states on the website the date when it will be shipped out and again, you have to be polite and let them know that it may be an error, not that they’re not paying attention when buying shit online.
Look, I’m not saying all customers are like this, I’ve had a few who God bless their soul, they were amazing and guess what, they also had some problems with their orders, but they were understanding and nice. Like I would have stayed on the phone with them for more time if I could.
What I’m trying to say is that be nice to people, no matter what their job is. I’m not saying here that only people working in customer service/support need this, EVERYONE needs this, but we tend to be yelled at more often because we are the ones people come and complain. And before someone says that is our job, no, that is not our job, our job is to help you out as best as we can. We can only do so much for you and having you yell at us because you didn’t pay attention when placing an order is not ok. It’s not ok even when there are reasons such as a lost package while in transit, but I can understand that and I really feel sorry for customers in situations such as this.
Again, I didn’t mean to offend anyone, I just really needed to vent because I’ve had a lot is people yell at me today alone and I couldn’t really keep it in myself for any longer.
