One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.

People will do everything they can to get you convinced rape and pedophilia are the worst crimes possible, then accuse whoever they like the least of being either a rapist, a pedophile, or both, counting on you turning on them just for being accused of the crime.

Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.
Including (sigh) the em dash.
There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.
A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.
No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.
You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.
Defend the em dash.

Before TV this was a series of 66 movies. As TV got popular, the actor/producer bought the rights and publishes them as a TV series. The first brand icon on a lunch box was this character.
I've never claimed to be smart; I'm just someone who reads a lot and tries to understand the world around me to the best of my ability by relying on experts.
So please pardon me if this is just pure ignorance if not outright stupidity, but there is something I fail to grasp every time there's discourse about who can write and draw and look at and read art with LGBTQ+ relationships.
In all the discourse about how (people who are perceived to be) women should not write or enjoy MLM fiction and (people who are perceived to be) men should not write or enjoy WLW fiction, because if they do they are wretched dirty bad wrong fetishists, I have never seen someone unironically say that there are restrictions on who can write or enjoy MLW fiction.
It's always the dirtybadwrong (presumed) cishet GIRLS are dirtybadwrong for liking slash and yaoi. And god save us all from the dirtybadwrong (presumed) cishet men who like femslash and yuri. They need to stick to the hetero shit. And of course, LGBTQ+ can create and enjoy the hetero shit, too, that's totally fine for the LGBTQ+ who we love (despite the frequent assumptions that LGBTQ+ who do enjoy queer art are not, in fact, queer, which is a whole 'nother layer to this conversation) to create and enjoy heterosexual couples in art and narrative fiction.
I've absolutely seen comments that LGBTQ+ people shouldn't create or enjoy art about cishet romantic entanglements, but they're basically never actually serious. Usually, it's just "people I think are girls/boys can't create or enjoy art about two people of the opposite gender because they're ICKY PEOPLE who are FETISHISERS."
Underneath all of this is the fact that:
we must place fictional queer romantic relationships in specific gated communities where if you don't pass the sniff test, you're a bad person, and,
everybody can enjoy fictional heterosexual romantic relationships.
And I feel like I'm losing my entire tiny mind because I don't see how that isn't cisheteronormativity at play, being insisted upon by my fellow LGBTQ+ people.
You must be this much of a cis gay man to enjoy fictional MLM romantic relationships. You must be this much of a cis lesbian to enjoy fictional WLW relationships. But it doesn't matter who you are: enjoy this straight couple.
We demand the queer credentials of any artist who doesn't match the gender and sexuality of their queer characters, and even if they are like "I'm non-binary and bisexual" we squint and go "Nah, that's an icky gross dirty bad wrong straight cis woman" and tell her to go play with the hetero dolls. And it's okay for someone we have deemed appropriately LGBTQ+ to play with the hetero dolls, too.
This makes heterosexuality the default. Doesn't it? If it's the one thing EVERYBODY can enjoy, then that's the default. Yeah?
Which is a thing I object to. Which is a thing we should all object to, isn't it? If heterosexuality is the thing everybody is allowed to enjoy, it is the default. Which is, like, yeah, okay, that is actually the reality being imposed on us by patriarchy and white supremacy but I think reality fucking sucks.
