Before you decide to bail, I want you to see what youāll be missing.
The text quickly follows with a picture of pastries fresh from the oven.
Heās right. KatnissĀ wasĀ going to bail, but now sheās going to show up out of spite. Or more like sheer lack of will.Ā
āThatās a dirty trick,ā she says, when Peeta flips the bolt to let her inside.Ā
āI can see youāre suffering,ā he replies. He ushers her towards the door to the kitchen. āThis way. I need a guinea pig.ā
āAm I allowed back here?ā She says as she peruses the new space. Two sleek prep tables, a wall full of ovens, walk in fridge and an industrial sized sink. Itās not dissimilar to the kitchen at Ripperās, but without that grimy layer of grease that seems to coat every surface.
There are some plates laid out on one of the prep tables. She fixes him with a look. āYou made me breakfast?ā She asks flatly. Is she on a date right now?
He rolls over a chair from the other station and gestures for her to sit. āIām working on new menu items.ā
She sighs. She doesnāt completely trust his intentions, but she also isnāt a fool who would turn down a breakfast spread. Especially one that looks as delectable as this one. She tilts her head to get a better look. Is that fig?
āFine,ā she acquiesces, but she pulls out her own chair to sit in.
She reaches for the fig plate first. Itās some sort of chocolate muffin with a fig custard. A breakfast cupcake, Peeta calls it. Itās very pretty with fresh fig slices fanned out on top. She could devour the whole thing in two bites, but she still has three other dishes to try, so she displays extreme self control and sets the plate aside.
āDo you own this place?ā She asks as she moves to the next plate. An avocado and egg breakfast burrito with a dollop of piped sour cream.
āNo, my parents do. They have a couple of locations around town.ā
āYouāre from here?ā She asks around a fluffy bite of eggs. Itās not as good as the muffin, but itās savory and a convenient hand held item, which she guesses is the point.
āNorth side of town,ā he says.
āWhy are you sharing an apartment? Is a bakerās salary that bad?ā The next plate is a blend between an apple pie and a fritter. āIs that cheddar?ā She gasps around a bite.
He nods. āIām still paying for art school.ā
āYou went to school for that?ā
āNow you sound like my mother,ā he says with a laugh.
āIf your parents live here, why not live at home?ā Thatās what she would do, except her mother sold the house and moved to the beach as soon as she and Prim were out of high school. Now Katniss is waiting for her sister to finish med school, which Katniss is helping to pay for, and, well, thatās pretty expensive.
Peeta scoffs. āNo thanks.ā She heās gotĀ thatĀ kind of family, she quickly deduces from his tone.
She reaches for the last one, which is a bacon egg and cheese sandwich, but the bread he uses is a cheese bun. Fresh from the oven cheese buns. At breakfast. She could cry.
She takes a big bite, not at all trying to censor the sounds that follow. She can hear Peetaās laughter as she licks her fingers clean.
āSo thatās the one?ā He says.
āObviously.ā
āYouāre in luck. Yesterday that was supposed to be a breakfast pizza, but I was feeling inspired.ā
āBacon egg and cheese bun is the definite winner,ā she says, ducking her head to hide her blush. Now that sheās tried them all, she goes back for the muffin. āAlthough Iād eat them all again, honestly.āĀ
āThanks.ā
āWhat do I owe you?ā
He waves off her suggestion. āYou donāt typically pay to be on a taste panel.ā
āWhat do I owe?ā She repeats more firmly.
He sighs and leans back in his seat. āFine. A box of lemon ginger tea and a pack of peppermints.ā
Ugh,Ā peppermints.
āWhatās with the peppermints?ā She hedges, still licking the last of the fig custard off her thumb. āIs your breath really that bad?ā
He laughs. āI donāt know, you tell me.ā He opens his mouth wide and threatens to blow in her face.Ā
āI donāt need to. I can smell your pillow,ā she replies demurely.Ā
He grimaces and checks his breath against his hand. āReally?ā
āIām teasing.ā
He stands, moving around the counter to clear the empty plates. āThe peppermints help me stay awake,ā he says.Ā
āIsnāt that what the tea is for?ā She stacks her plates and hands them off in a single pile, which he walks to the sink.
āSometimes I need a kick of sugar.ā
āThen put some in your tea,ā she argues.
He wrinkles his nose in distaste.Ā
āFine. A box of lemon ginger tea and a pack of peppermints,ā she confirms.Ā
The bell out front rings. āThatās probably Delly,ā Peeta says.Ā
āWhat time is it?ā
ā6:30.ā
āAlready?ā She moves to stand, picking up her bag from below the counter. āI should head home. Thanks for breakfast.ā
He holds the kitchen door for her. āGoodnight, Katniss.ā
āGood morning, Peeta,ā she replies as she slips by.Ā
What if I write an everlark fanfic but itās the legend of Zelda but genderbent?

SERIOUSLY HEAR ME OUT I think this could really work! Peeta? Magical baby girl I love him so much he could be Zelda if he starred getting into engineering and science and stuff. Katniss? Katniss already is link. Are you kidding me? Doesnāt speak? Check! Loves to eat? Check! Bizarrely domestic? Check! The only different is that katniss isnāt a total fashionista that needs to wear a low back top to battle but WE CAN WORKSHOP THIS!
I can just see them, under the stars, sharing a tent, not thinking that maybe they could forget about the war by making out for several hours. Thatās SO THEM.
the quell was terrible, period. but isn't so precious that suzanne gives us a little taste of what katniss would want to be if she didn't have to focus on surviving. of what she would want to do if she didn't have to worry about the future.
and to find out that katniss everdeen would want to love. deeply. and bask freely in the love that her precious dandelion in the spring gives her.
and with what she thinks the end of her life with be, she gets to do just that. to love. to feel love back. to be happy.
I really like to think about what flaws or quirks Peeta could possibly have but we just donāt read about them because Katniss doesnāt see them or notice them. Like yeah I totally understand the guys a sweetheart but imagine he chews mega loudly? Or idk snores?
College this, college that, when do I get to talk about why Galeās betrayal was the most heartbreaking thing in the series because at the end Katniss and Peeta got together but she still lost her closest friend, her brother. After already loosing her dad and sister. She lost the one person who she didnāt know because of her traumatic experiences in the games and the one person who she in a way trusted the most. Bitch she trusted him to keep the most important person in her life safe.
So yeah even though I donāt exactly like him, doesnāt mean that his storyline didnāt hurt me or move me.
Katniss Everdeen couldnāt care less about her familyās Christmas party but after the unexpected visit of an old friend, she learns to appreciate the Holidays.

The door to the stable thuds against the opposite wall and Peeta looks up from his task wearily, before dropping his head back to his work unphased, āHere to finish me off sweetheart?ā
Itās been a turbulent month of searching for him; day after day, trying to hold on to hope, but preparing for the worst. Finally seeing him alive in the flesh, sheās filled with a mixture of relief and joy. Unfortunately his flippant greeting also sparks her anger. She crosses the room in three strides, palms slamming into his chest. Caught off guard, he loses balance and tumbles to the ground.
She immediately regrets it.
āWhat was that for?ā He glowers up at her, before standing. Brushing himself off, he winces at the fresh cuts on his hands. She reaches out to inspect his injury, but he yanks his hands out of her reach, āNo thanks, I think youāve done enough. Why are you even here Katniss?ā
āI came to find you.ā
His brow darts up momentarily, before furrowing, āwhy? I came to the Capital specifically because Haymitch always said he wouldnāt be caught dead here.ā
āSo you can imagine what a delight heās been,ā she snarks.
āWell I didnāt ask either of you to come!ā
She throws her hands up, āhow would we know that, Peeta? You just left! We didnāt know what had happened to you: if you were murdered or abducted.ā None of this is going as sheād imagined. Her daydreams of their reunion consisted mainly of kissing and very little speaking, let alone yelling.
