Today is my last day of the first semester of college! I’m not even worried about how prepared I am for the final, I am more excited about surviving and finishing. I have struggled so profoundly with perfectionism and scolded myself for not studying more, for not being better. It seems as though I easily forget that I didn’t follow a standard curriculum for high school, never learned algebra past the eighth grade, haven’t had a semester of school in about five years. I see kids who are coming out of high school and failing classes already, burned out and disgruntled. I remember being in school and bucking everything the teachers wanted me to do. There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part the kids haven’t grown out of that yet. At eighteen you aren’t ready to give your life to a career; you haven’t been in the world long enough to be exposed to the myriad of esoteric choices there are in the world. At eighteen you either worry too much about your scores or you are rebellious and don’t care at all. I will admit that it’s difficult to grow out of the mindset of being obsessed with grades especially when you plan on going to graduate school, but I’m trying to approach it from a different angle and experiment with it a bit. Even if I’m not pushing myself as hard as I “should,” the amount of rest I let myself have is important to my overall mental state in life. If I can get my degree with the least amount of stress, not the highest grades, I believe that will benefit me for the rest of my life when other difficult situations arise. Most religions teach you that you should not be tied to a materialistic outcome; I am playing a game designed by someone else in which I am not fully given the rules and the rules may be stacked against my way of learning to begin with, so then how can I fault myself for not achieving the highest? If you went to a foreign country and weren’t aware of a certain custom, would you beat yourself up for not knowing better? That’s how I feel about the world in general. I was born into a set of rules and norms that I am unaware of, the law of nature makes more sense, but the law of humans is more subtle and more complex. If I make a mistake how can I be faulted when that’s how you learn?

I'm sorry I can't be more.
Disappearance - the rough stars blazing overhead- the lonely night hunter stalks and sighs smoke, where words unspoken are carried on the wind volcanic exaltation warnings of eruption and i am my father’s daughter passed unseeingly from one to the next like a baton for the depressed take a tiny piece till i’ve nothing left and when we pack up the house what fate befalls the dust we kicked up? will the rare trilliums unravel their cinnamon draping? will the wildflowers be mowed? only to be sacred if sacrificed but i was the tornado that picked you up, made shrapnel of your iron fortress then planted you in a forest of cedar and sage naked and alone with no word of my disappearance.
