dug up a shitload of HQ sunny stills from the early seasons and stuck them in this folder. they're sorted by season and episode because i'm going to be uploading them to the wiki, but i love this shit, so i wanted to share in the meantime

HEY. So. Long time no update, but I've added a ton more episode stills I've dug up, a bunch of HQ promo shots (including a bunch I'd never seen before from the Ingmar Bergman inspired S9 promo shoots), behind the scenes stuff from RCGs instagrams, sunny social media, etc. If you've ever seen any of these floating around on social media, I can guarantee they're here, crisp and unwatermarked.

I also actually shilled out ten bucks of my own money for download credits on the movie stills database for a good chunk of these, so it would be much appreciated if you guys linked back to the folder as a source when reposting. my hope is simply to preserve these images in high quality (for free), instead of reposting a million times over until the quality depreciates into deepfried territory and jpeg artefacts eat away at the picture lol

I'll keep the folder updated, I'm still tracking down a lot of promo stuff and trying to find higher quality images for a few episodes (primarily season 8), but... have fun <3

sunny 16 looks great but like, tbh? i can’t bring myself to be genuinely excited after the last few seasons

the issue with sunny is that their satire flipped on its head: in earlier seasons, sunny satirised the right wing and uneducated middle america blindly supporting conservatism, whereas in newer seasons, sunny satirises the left and “woke culture” from a centrist perspective

and that’s like, great and all. whatever. it’s just not… funny. they haven’t done it well at all, which is irritating because there are funny, relevant and impactful ways to criticise and satirise “woke culture” and the left and fuck, is there a lot there to make jokes out of (i say as a dirty fuckin lefty). there are funny ways to satirise the left whilst maintaining a clear point, but they’ve executed neither. they haven’t done it in a funny way, and they haven’t maintained a clear point

that’s why the comedy that work best is comedy that punches up, not that punches down. comedy that punches up at the government and the rich and the corporations and systems is the sort of comedy that lands and equally, is the sort of comedy that sunny used to express. now, sunny punches down at younger generations, liberalism, woke politics and topical sociological debates in a way that makes light of what should and could be serious conversations

none of that is to say that later seasons are offensive or “problematic”, because fuck those petty conversations. sunny has always been offensive and problematic, and that is really not my critique here. my critique is that the offensive and problematic content used to be funny or stand for something. if anything, it’s less offensive and problematic and, ironically, ostensibly stands for nothing

so instead, they replace offensive jokes with weird slapstick and awkward dialogue that tries too hard to be meta and politically relevant without taking a side. they’re too worried about reception than creating good comedy, to the extent that the quality of the writing has dropped drastically in pursuit of being comfortably consumable to more people

rcg have always criticised middle america through their satirical comedy. now, they’ve become a part of it
