but ykw at least i'm not on mount everest. at least i'm not paying tens of thousands of dollars to slowly suffocate in a 300-person line at the gates of hell. never in my life will i have to be steered in a hypoxic stupor through the maze of poop and corpses atop mount everest. on this earth a lot of horrible things can happen to you without your permission but there are a few that you have to opt into. you can just say no thanks! and be guaranteed never to have to be on mount everest. much to be grateful for actually

My horse (sewing machine) has got colic (an internal knot) and requires veterinary medicine (screwdriver) in the form of exploratory surgery (removing plate) accompanied by anaesthesia (being unplugged.)

But it’s always interesting to remember that this is a very heavy-duty, highly powered power tool - a motor designed for punching and dancing - which generations of people, often women, have fully expected to repair and maintain in their own homes. There’s a large constellation of confidence, mechanical knowledge, repair experience and problem-solving ability embodied in the practice of keeping a domestic sewing machine, and it’s largely invisible to people who don’t know.

Ok so

Your grandmother probably never unplugged or turned off when doing a quick fix, and tbh - the electric parts of the machine being mostly around the motor, and the mechanical parts under the plate being fairly neutral entities - it isn’t usually necessary-necessary.

However, it’s a really good idea to make sure the machine can’t spring into life when your fingers are around the plate - and when your attention is on the problem.

For example, a Mouse or other small child or creature might come over, and helpfully/accidentally press on the foot pedal. A pet might want to stand near you. Your own foot might be negligently lying on the pedal and have a spasm.

Unplug the power cord/foot pedal at the machine end, not at the wall - it’s lazier - and then you don’t have to worry about this happening!

For a different perspective, I'm pretty sure I was taught to unplug my machine any time I took a plate off. Maybe anytime I used a screw driver, except changing out the presser foot? I also turn off the machine (but not unplug) for threading the needle and replacing the bobbin, which I know some people skip.

Now I'm wondering if I learned this from other sewers, or if this was from making things with my Dad in his wood shop. We did so much it's hard to remember. He once gave me an old rotary phone and a screwdriver and said "don't you wanna know what's inside?"

I've also heard good things about these online courses. They do "open house" events regularly and you can get discount codes by signing up.

The company we consulted for our upgrades specializes in inclusive play, and does so by actually consulting not only persons in wheelchairs but a spectrum of ability. Not disability advocates- people who have disabilities.

And that has been the difference in this whole conversation-and just about every conversation ive been having lately: people will be upset on your behalf for selfish reasons without asking how you feel.

You're not upset that there new playground isn't inclusive enough, you're upset that it holds no nostalgia for you.
