We are living a busy world where most of us have to go to school, to work, or take care of families. Thus, our work and our responsibilities occupy a majority of time we have every day. Some people even think human beings work like a machine in this busy world. They don’t have enough time to think about what they are doing. They do things because they need to do it in order to survive such as going to work and earning money. However, most of them don’t usually reflect upon their lives to see if they are really happy and satisfied with what they have done. Some people might be able to earn a lot of money and buying a lot of expensive stuff, but they are not necessarily happy. Some even have a stressful life. In my opinion, everyone should be born to be happy even though not all of us are that lucky. I have read some documents about how to be happy and I want to share with people some tips I found helpful. The first tip is to plan for a wonderful trip but end up not going. It sounds so weird, right? But I have done it several times and it worked for me. My friends and I want to visit so many places around the world but we actually don’t have time and money to go. However, we still talked about our dream and made some wonderful plans for the future. I felt so happy and more positive about life when talking with them and thinking about our amazing plan. Second, sleeping more can help you become happier. People who lack sleep usually feel stressful. In addition, making more friends is an important factor contributing to your happiness. It doesn’t mean you should know a lot of people but don’t actually have a good and stable relationship with any of them. Good friends can cheer you up and make you feel yourselves interesting. Moreover, doing some exercises also makes you happy. People who do some physical activities every day usually have more energy and feel more confident than people who sit beside their desk the whole day. Finally, helping others out is a good way to make both yourselves and others become happier. I myself feel really good when I can help someone even if it is just a tiny thing such as open the door for a disabled. I hope all of you will become happier every day with our busy lives. Â

In my opinion, text can refer to anything and is a set of arbitrary symbols and texts are used to convey something. We see texts every day and everywhere with or without even noticing it is a text. Writers and journalists use texts to write books, newspapers, or journals. In this case, texts are used to demonstrate an idea, to give writes’ opinions, or just to present some information, and this is the case as which people usually consider as texts. In fact, texts can be anything, not just a physical paper full of letters and numbers. A speech can be considered a text. When a man delivers his speech, he is giving listeners his idea or what he thinks on a particular matter of subject. Instead of writing a book about that subject, he stands in front of the public and talk to all in order to convey his idea. A video is also a text. By watching this video, we know what it is about and what it wants to convey even if it is just an advertisement, entertainment, or discovery video. Likewise, a movie is a text. It could be a romantic movie, a documentary, a horror movie, or a comedy. Characters in the movie with their personalities and their lives give audiences some feeling or thought. The movie might inspire people to live better, to chase their dreams, to care more about their family, or just to laugh. What about a work of art? Even though it doesn’t have any letter or sound, it is a text. By images, artists tell us something which might be very serious like the environmental issue, or very ordinary like his house. Not only artists, writers, and actors use texts, but also every person uses it every day to communicate. Our conversations with others are texts. Socrates, one of the first philosophers in ancient Greece, communicated with people to convey his philosophy. Thus, even though he did not write any books, his conversations and idea he conveyed were texts. Things as simple as thanks or bye are text because this is what you want to convey to other people. Indeed, texts can be anything.   Â

Nowadays, we are facing a lot of problems in every aspect of life such as education, politics, economics and health. For my paper two, I decided to write about obesity, which is one of concerns of health-related problem. I think I could find many sources of this topic since it is a quite common problem among Americans now. I started working on my paper by looking for some books in our Nova library. And I found out that there are so many books there which are related to this problem. Most of them talk about what obesity is and reasons for obesity and how to overcome it and only one provides formulas and methods to measure ones constitution. Also, I will use sources about food, nutrients, and physical activities. The process of looking for sources and doing the bibliography is very helpful to me. At first, when I chose this topic, I could only think of one thing I would write about and it is treatment of obesity. Then, by reading through contents of the sources, I starting generating some more ideas about what would be on my essay. I will write about the definition and formula to measure if one is considered obese, overweight, normal, or too skinny. In order to solve the problem, we need to understand why it happens. Overeating is one of the reasons. So I went ahead and found books about fast food and nutrients people usually take in every day. These books can give me more specific information and broader view on what we eat than the books which are about obesity. In addition, while I was looking for these books, I found a book which talks about opposing viewpoints of the problem. It gave me an idea of adding that opposing view to my paper to make it more interesting. I want to make my argument to prove my point which is we need to prevent obesity because it can cause potential danger especially among youngsters. I’m still reading the sources and selecting data and ideas to use in my essay. Â

Gun control is one of the most controversial topics in the US. If you carry a gun with you, you would be able to defend yourselves against a murderer. However, there have been so many mass killing which happened because of the personal access to guns. One of very outstanding example is the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. Thus, there are many people who oppose it and also a lot of others still support it. I guess each of us has our own opinions and perspectives on this topic. You might agree that the use of gun should be controlled for a safe society, or you may disagree because you think that everyone should have access to guns in order to protect themselves. Have you ever thought if a person from other time of history knew that issue, what would he think about it? What about a Spartan. Sparta was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece. The special thing here is that it was a military-base country so everyone had access to weapons, which were obviously not guns but other weapons available at that time. How would he react to our controversial issue? He might think that the issue is nonsense. Why would people have to argue on it? Because it is very simple and necessary that a person should always have his weapon along with him not only to protect himself, but also to protect his family. In addition, he should be trained since he was a kid how to use the weapons skillfully and when to use them. Using a gun wisely could help him survive in any situation and defeat all of his enemies. A Spartan might think that having a gun with him is a must-have. The law of gun control would not make any sense to him. Indeed, as the society has changed, people in the past and people at present might have completely different perspectives on the same topic.

I just finished my paper and I think the process we used in class is quite useful. At first, it took me more than 1 week to find out my topic. Then it took me some more days to define ideas I wanted to talk about and then arrange them to get a reasonable structure. Thanks to class discussion, I knew how to find sources and which kinds of sources are appropriate and reliable. I started to write my first draft and the introduction took me the whole evening to finish it. I think I have some idea but don’t know how to express them in 8 pages essay. I read more and more sources including websites and books. I was getting better and better in writing and generating ideas. The second half of my essay took less time to write than the first part for I kind of got used to the topic. I realized that I have written faster than when I just started my paper. It took me 15 minutes to summarize the whole essay. After that, thanks to the peer review workshop and professor’s comments, I myself read my essay again, and I found mistakes and parts which were not clear or hard to understand. I rewrote my essay and tried to fix these problems even though the main point is still the same in general. This process helped me look at my own mistakes and get used to writing a lot more.  Â

      I am amazed by the flexibility of American college education system. True, it takes some time to adapt, not very user friendly in the beginning, even challenging.  Someone who is not used to this system, like me, may find it difficult to comprehend those applied and not applied degrees, certificates, majors, minors, electives, prerequisites, course equivalents, hybrid courses, ELI courses, dynamic sessions, etc. It seems to take a college degree just to find your way through the system, but as you slowly move forward, analyzing different options, talking to advisors, trying to build your own schedule, countless possibilities emerge.

Studying is very important to everyone. That’s why we are now going to school to learn and then to get a degree in order to have a better life. However, the world has been developing and changing incessantly, and many of us have been so busy with a lot of things besides studying such as working, taking care of our families, and participating in extracurricular. With such overload of work, some people do not have enough time to go to school even though they really want to. As a result, they decide to get distance learning by taking online class. In my opinion, this way of learning has both advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage is that learners still get a degree which has the same value as they go to school if they finish their courses. They just need a computer with internet connection and they can study, ask professors for help, and take the test and submit it everywhere and at any time. So this class is very flexible but still gives them the degree with the same value. In addition, learners who attend online class do have to drive miles to get to campus, which can help save lots of gas, money, and time. Professors will provide students with the same lectures as he should provide in person class. There is a discussion board where all students and professor can discuss topics, ask questions, and interact with people. However, this type of learning also has disadvantages. When you do not go to class, you might not have enough motivation to learn. Some people might just take the test and finish the course literally without learning any new things. Moreover, talking and interacting with classmates to build a relationship is usually harder in online class. Finally, there might be a trouble with the Internet or computers which you might not be able to anticipate. You might not have any means to take the test if it is now midnight and the test is due tomorrow morning. In general, I think everything has its pros and cons, and so does distance learning. It is good for many people but it might not work for you and vice versa. Hence, in order to make a decision wisely, you should consider both its pros and cons, and apply them to your own life to see if it is better for you. Â

Journal 5-Making an argument
Capital punishment or death penalty is a very complicated issue since there are a lot of people opposing it while many others support it. Both sides have their own reasons for their choices. In terms of morality, killing people is never a good and right thing to do no matter who is being killed and what is the reason for the execution. Moreover, the means of executing criminal on death row are just so cruel and inhuman. Can you imagine how a person is killed by lethal injection, gas chamber, or electrocution legally and then after all, because the reason for his execution is for the safety of society, we are all happy because he has no longer existed? However, people who support the law still think if one does the wrong thing, he or she should receive a punishment equivalent to how serious the crime he or she committed. Deterrence is also an argument point. It is understandable and rational that people are afraid of punishment and so they will be less likely to commit a sin if they know that it might cause them a bad consequence. Hence, supporters of the penalty think the fear of capital punishment as well as death might be able to deter people from doing the wrong things and make them better people over time. However, as many studies on this issue were conducted, the data revealed that death penalty states have higher murder rate than non-death penalty states. It is to say this punishment has no impact on preventing people from murdering. One more argument point of this issue is cost of death vs cost of keeping a person in prison for life. We all know that prisoners live on money which is from taxes we pay every year, so sentencing a criminal to death sounds like a good way to protect our society and save money. In fact, in order to execute someone, it is not that simple. It requires more pre-trail with more expert, more investigation, and more security for inmates on the death row and so on. Most importantly, there are many wrongful cases throughout the history of capital punishment for making a mistake if inevitable in every system that relies on human testimony. Based on all of these arguments, I learn that capital punishment can’t make people become better and help build a better society which a punishment is supposed to do. Therefore, in my opinion, I think death penalty should not be practiced and should be replaced by life imprisonment.Â
