At first, I didn't particularly like the song You Are Music from Yeston/Kopit. I mean, I love the idea. I love Erik thinking of Christine as music and have the same thought myself, that she is the embodiment of music, the song just didn't particularly stick out to me. But then I got it stuck in my head at work, and started singing it. I had put it on my iPod the night before because I already had my iPod set up to the computer and I thought 'why not?', so I did it. I'm listening to the song now.

I LOVE IT NOW.

It's so pretty and the tune to the 'do re mi' is so cool and beautiful. That one, and the la/ba parts in the Music Lessons/Phantom Fugue, the tunes are so cool! Why can't the songs my vocal coach had me sing for warm up be that cool?! xD

This is brilliant. I only have one problem with this, though; in the original book, it is said that Erik (at least his hands) smelt of death. Is that what 'my man' would smell like if he switched to Old Spice? Brilliant job, there... Such an appealing scent... o.0

Last night, I dreamt that I had a deformity like Erik. And I was wearing a mask.

My family didn't care, because they're awesome like that (in fact, in my dream, my dad was wearing a mask too to make it feel less strange). For some reason, we were all out in public, and I was going to buy a new mask, and people were all around us wanting to see my face. I tried to just ignore them and turn my back to them to try on different masks to see which one I wanted, but they wouldn't leave me alone. Eventually I hid under a table with this big tablecloth on it that went all the way to the floor so no one could see me, but I was so mad at them that I decided to go out without my mask just to freak them out. I actually felt smug when everyone was terrified, because they deserved it.

It was a half-deformity. Actually, I kind of think it was like Gerik's deformity, so I supposed I was actually pretty lucky...

You know, Joseph Buquet, a character who is dead before the beginning of the novel, is in more adaptions of the Phantom of the Opera than the Persian, a character that the whole climax of the novel is told from the point of view of… I just find this strange.

You know, there is something that I've seen phans mistakenly think that really annoys me;

People seem to think that Christine thought the Angel of Music was literally her father.

But no, that’s just incorrect.

Christine associates the Angel of Music with her father because of him telling her stories about the angel when she was a child, and him telling her that he would SEND DOWN THE ANGEL OF MUSIC to her when he is dead.

Not that he would come down to her as the Angel of Music; that he would SEND her the Angel of Music.

For one thing; people do not turn into angels when they die. Angels are not the souls of dead people; they are creatures all of their own. But, of course, I know that people mistakenly believe that angels are ghosts or whatever…

It’s not exactly the phans per say that think this.  It’s more like what the story itself has suggested.  For example, in the musical, more than once it was brought up.  Christine sings these words during the graveyard scene: “Angel or father, friend or Phantom, who is it there staring?”  I have even seen where the lyrics get mixed up for the Phantom’s (Erik’s) response: “Too long you’ve wandered in winter, far from my fatherly gaze.”  It’s supposed to be ‘far reaching’ gaze, but somehow, over time, it got changed.  Raoul also says, “This man, this thing, is not your father!”

There were references to the father bit in the Susan Kay novel a few times too.  So, nope, I don’t really see where phans think this, I know I sure don’t, but the story itself has kind of thrown that suggestion around.

Hm, I don't really remember it in Kay... But yeah, I see that ALW seems to make that mistake too, but only sometimes, which is weird. I've always liked the far-reaching gaze better, as it makes more sense and sounds less incestual. I've never really understood why Raoul says 'this thing is not your father'. Of course not, it's the Angel of Music! I kind of forgot about Christine singing that. But she also says that her father would send her the Angel of Music.

"When I'm in heaven, child; I will send the angel of music to you."

They never imply, at least from what I've seen, that Christine thought it was her father in Leroux. So I don't see why people (including ALW, sometimes) make this assumption. But anyway, yeah. Just a pet peeve of mine...

The idea of Erik and Christine singing do ray mi or me ma mi mo mu or any other vocal exercise songs while he's teaching her to sing amuses me

Christine: "Those words are weird, I don't want to sing it!"

Erik: "I know it seems odd but it will help with your voice. Try it."

Christine: *sings* "... I will go with you will you go with me to the Dairy Queen?! I will go with you will you go with me to the Dairy Queen?"
